Cast Not Away Your ConfidenceBro. David Chancellor

It's good to remember what God has done for us and how things were before we found God. We can remember other trials we have come through. "Cast not away therefore your confidence..." "...knowing in yourselves that ye have in heaven a better and an enduring substance..." We, personally, should have the confidence that we have something in heaven waiting for us. You want to hang on to this confidence.
2 Timothy 1:12-14
Paul was suffering some persecutions at the hand of his own people, but he said, "I am not ashamed." Why? "...for I know whom I have believed, and am persuaded that he is able to keep that which I have committed unto him..." He had confidence that what he had given God would be kept safely. When we commit things to God, we need to "hold fast" and "keep by the Holy Ghost" the good thing given to us.
"For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God." We are not held by the spirit of fear, but are given the privilege of having "our father." We have confidence, because of his Spirit bearing witness, that we are his children. This is where our confidence lies, and we need no other confidence. We are heirs - permitted to inherit and share things together with Christ.
1 John 5:18-20
This is more of our confidence. God changes the course of our life - we don't follow the course of sin anymore. It is not that we "cannot" sin, for that ability to sin is still there, but rather we "do not." What is the difference? One says you "cannot" and is a binding to a law. The other is a way of life. A saved person does not want to sin. The devil is restricted in what he can do. If Christ is dwelling in you, the devil can not touch him now anymore than he did when Christ walked this earth. The devil didn't put Christ on the cross. Christ sacrificed himself. We aren't to be "arrogant", but we can KNOW we are of God. We need this confidence. If you are saved, it can't be denied that you are of God. "The world lieth in wickedness..." This is a fact. It presents a contrast. You either know you are of God or you are of the world. You can't be both. It is one or the other. We can have the confidence that we are of God and have left the world. Everyone that is in the world "lieth in wickedness." You will know which you are a part of. Deception is claiming to know God and saying that it is all right to go the way of the world. God came and people saw him and he left behind a witness. Christ gave us an understanding by his coming. Being personally acquainted with Jesus is eternal life.
2 Timothy 2:16-19
Shun those things that would take us away from God. We don't want our faith to be overthrown by these other ideas. We can know we are of God. We can say, "I am of God." We need to have this confidence. The foundation we stand on is this: "The Lord knows them that are his..." It is good when both you and God know you are of God. Others will be able to see that you are of God, but this is not your foundation. A role of members is pointless because God won't lose track. God knows who is his. If anyone needed this confidence, the apostle Paul did. Plenty of people tried to prove him wrong. The confidence that we are of God doesn't take from anyone else what they do or don't have. People need to get assurance of their standing with God. God knows who belongs to him. Don't let your confidence be taken away.
