And unto the angel of the church of the Laodiceans write; These things saith the Amen, the faithful and true witness, the beginning of the creation of God; I know thy works, that thou art neither cold nor hot; I would thou wert cold or hot. So then because thou art lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will spue thee out of my mouth. Because thou sayest, I am rich, and increased with goods, and have need of nothing; and knowest not that thou art wretched, and miserable, and poor, and blind, and naked: I counsel thee to buy of me gold tried in the fire, that thou mayest be rich: and white raiment, that thou mayest be clothed, and that the shame of thy nakedness do not appear; and anoint thine eyes with eyesalve, that thou mayest see. As many as I love, I rebuke and chasten: be zealous therefore, and repent. Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me. To him that overcometh will I grant to sit with me in my throne, even as I also overcame, and am set down with my Father in his throne. He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches.
How could a church get into such a condition? There was a church in Laodicea and it wasn’t that long after Jesus had been on earth. Something happened to cause a cooling off.
Picture the good Thanksgiving feast you just had. "Because thou sayest, I am rich, and increased with goods, and have need of nothing; and knowest not that thou art wretched, and miserable, and poor, and blind, and naked:" You don’t have to live like a homeless person. You can open the door to a feast. There was a condition there that needed to be met. This message goes beyond just the church. Christianity, as most project it today, needs white raiment for their nakedness. Sin brings nakedness with it. To keep on sinning is to continue on naked. Get that from God which covers that up. The sin should be removed. The Spirit can help you to see and can heal you. God has something for those that are miserable and wretched.
The poor don’t often invite others in to share with them. They don’t want to share the condition inside. When people are in a poor, wretched state they don’t want to open the door for fear of what may be found there. If you’re afraid of what Jesus will find, it’s time to clean house. You’re missing out on the good things because you’re afraid to face the poverty that’s there. God has designed it where the soul can go from a dark, cold, hungry and lonely place to a cheery, warm, full and friendly place. It becomes a time of visiting and sharing with God if we don’t shut him out. God can work on us to change us so that we can be comfortable to have him there. Let him come into your heart and abide there. You can be rich when you let him come into your soul. People’s lives are enriched when Jesus dwells there.
I will not leave you comfortless: I will come to you. Yet a little while, and the world seeth me no more: but ye see me: because I live, ye shall live also. At that day ye shall know that I am in my Father, and ye in me, and I in you. He that hath my commandments and keepeth them, he it is that loveth me; and he that loveth me shall be loved of my Father, and I will love him, and will manifest myself to him. Judas saith unto him, not Iscariot, Lord, how is it that thou wilt manifest thyself unto us, and not unto the world? Jesus answered and said unto him, If a man love me, he will keep my words: and my Father will love him, and we will come unto him, and make our abode with him.
Jesus wasn’t going to leave them without what they needed. We need to be ready to keep the words of Christ. If we abandon the truth we’ll end up poor, blind, wretched and miserable. If we keep his commandments, we can have communion with God. You can’t expect to experience God’s presence if you don’t keep his word. The religious world is in a sad condition because they’re settling for something that doesn’t meet the needs of souls. They’re missing out on feasting on the things of God. They settle for an intellectual exercise. They look to philosophy and psychology to mollify the hurt. They settle for form and ritual. Form won’t meet the need of the soul. Jesus was speaking of something beyond ceremonial holiness. He was showing them a walk and relationship with God. Don’t get into a position where you’re ashamed to come before God. Keep things clear and open between you and God. Sit down and have communion with God.
For this cause I bow my knees unto the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, Of whom the whole family in heaven and earth is named, That he would grant you, according to the riches of his glory, to be strengthened with might by his Spirit in the inner man; That Christ may dwell in your hearts by faith; that ye, being rooted and ground in love, May be able to comprehend with all saints what is the breadth, and length, and depth, and height: And to know the love of Christ, which passeth knowledge, that ye might be filled with all the fulness of God.
Paul wanted these to have the inner strength they needed. People need sanctification – a strengthening of the inner man by God’s Spirit. People need a love that is rooted and grounded. They need the love that comes from God. The Spirit of God can help us to continually love folks. When the Spirit of God comes in, you’ll realize that the love of God is a great thing. The riches we have are in God and not in ourselves. We can experience God in his fulness. He can move in and fill up the house. Even in our battles we can enjoy God’s presence. If things have come between you and God, get it out of the way; don’t cheat yourself out of God’s presence. We can be victorious in God. We can enjoy what was promised to the disciples if we’ll be an overcomer. Communion with God will put the fire into your soul. Maintain that closeness with God.
