For we ourselves also were sometimes foolish, disobedient, deceived, serving divers lusts and pleasures, living in malice and envy, hateful, and hating one another. But after the kindness and love of God our Saviour toward man appeared, Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost; Which he shed on us abundantly through Jesus Christ our Saviour; That being justified by his grace, we should be made heirs according to the hope of eternal life.
"For we ourselves also were sometimes foolish, disobedient, deceived, serving divers lusts and pleasures, living in malice and envy, hateful, and hating one another." This was us. The change in us wasn’t from our doing, but by the mercy of God. It was by "the washing of regeneration." We needed a new life.
How do people become of a certain religion? What did you have to do to get it? You can’t become a Christian without the washing. You need a new life. Assenting to a creed won’t give you a new life. We need a new birth because we need a new life.
John 3:1-8, 14-16
There was a man of the Pharisees, name Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews; The same came to Jesus by night, and said unto him, Rabbi, we know that thou art a teacher come from God: for no man can do these miracles that thou doest, except God be with him. Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God. Nicodemus saith unto him, How can a man be born when he is old? can he enter the second time into his mother’s womb, and be born? Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God. That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. Marvel not that I said unto thee, Ye must be born again. The wind bloweth where it listeth, and thou hearest the sound thereof, but canst not tell whence it cometh, and whither it goeth: so is every one that is born of the Spirit.
And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of man be lifted up. That whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have eternal life. For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.
Nicodemus was willing to acknowledge that Christ was a prophet. Jesus told him that if he wasn’t born again, he wasn’t getting it. Jesus was referring to a spiritual birth. We can’t explain the technical details of the process but we know he does it because he makes it possible to live the Christian life.
When we turn to Christ as our Savior, and put our hope and trust in him, we receive a new birth and start a walk with God. We have life in our souls.
That was the true Light, which lighteth every man that cometh into the world. He was in the world, and the world was made by him, and the world knew him not. He came unto his own, and his own received him not. But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them which believe on his name: Which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.
Everyone needs a new birth. Sin separates from God. Our new birth is found in Christ.
These words spake Jesus, and lifted up his eyes to heaven, and said, Father, the hour is come; glorify thy Son, that thy Son also may glorify thee: As thou hast given him power over all flesh, that he should give eternal life to as many as thou hast given him. And this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent.
"And this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent." When we get cleaned up, we begin our walk with God. Eternal life is our relationship with God. Sin causes the relationship to be destroyed and separates us from God. When sin is removed, a new walk with God begins. From the point you get saved forward a holy life is what God expects. You have access to God and to the means to live holy. Your life should be changed because you have a new life. Your walk with God begins with the new birth. To be able to live, new life is needed on the inside.
But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his.
If the presence of God isn’t with you and his Spirit isn’t in you, you’re not his. There must be some life within or you’re not God’s. If God’s Spirit isn’t in you, it doesn’t have to stay that way. We can’t be saved without a new birth.
1 John 5:10-12, 1
He that believeth on the Son of God hath the witness in himself: he that believeth not God hath made him a liar: because he believeth not the record that God gave of his Son. And this is the record, that God hath given to us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. He that hath the Son hath life; and he that hath not the Son of God hath not life.
Whosoever believeth that Jesus is the Christ is born of God: and every one that loveth him that begat loveth him also that is begotten of him.
If you’ve been born again, you have Jesus. If you haven’t, you don’t. There is something you can see. We need that witness from God that a change has been made. We need a two-way relationship with God: we know God and he knows us. We are able to live this life because he is there with us. Every believer has a new birth. We can be reconciled to God and have new life.
1 John 4:15-17
Whosoever shall confess that Jesus is the Son of God, God dwelleth in him, and he in God. And we have known and believed the love that God hath to us. God is love; and he that dwelleth in love dwelleth in God, and God in him. Herein is our love made perfect, that we may have boldness in the day of judgment: because as he is, so are we in this world.
New life begins here. It starts now. When we get saved, our lives change. From that point forward, we should be different. Our walk with God begins right there. We can find the means to overcome sin from that point forward. We’re changed because God does a work in us and walks with us.
