Pride

1 Peter 5:5-7

Likewise, ye younger, submit yourselves unto the elder. Yea, all of you be subject one to another, and be clothed with humility: for God resisteth the proud, and giveth grace to the humble. Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due time: Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you.

Peter admonished these to submit and be humble. Pride is a problem and causes problems in the life. "… for God resisteth the proud, and giveth grace to the humble…" God resists the proud. He gives grace to the humble. God wants us to recognize our dependence on him. When God allows something to humble you, it is his mercy that does it.

All of us need to be able to listen to each other and to work together. We need to be able to take admonition and learn from others.

Proverbs 16:18-19

Pride goeth before destruction, and an haughty spirit before a fall. Better it is to be of an humble spirit with the lowly, than to divide the spoil with the proud.

If you’re on the pinnacle of pride, the only way to go is down. It’s better to be humble and be with the lowly. What is easily obtained is easily lost.

Daniel 5:17-20

Then Daniel answered and said before the king, Let thy gifts be to thyself, and give thy rewards to another; yet I will read the writing unto the king, and make known to him the interpretation. O thou king, the most high God gave Nebuchadnezzar thy father a kingdom, and majesty, and glory, and honour: And for the majesty that he gave him, all people, nations, and languages, trembled and feared before him: whom he would he slew; and whom he would he kept alive; and whom he would he set up; and whom he would he put down. But when his heart was lifted up, and his mind hardened in pride, he was deposed from his kingly throne, and they took his glory from him:

Daniel was reminding the king of what came before him. It was something the king should have known. Nebuchadnezzar fell because of pride. One man and God can do a lot, but one man alone is nothing. Nebuchadnezzar had been used by God, and when he got uplifted in himself, God brought him down. Pride hardens the mind against the words and wisdom of God. Nebuchadnezzar didn’t come down without warning. Pride will cause you to turn down the warnings that God sends. When warnings aren’t heeded, there is nothing left but a fall. If we heed the warnings we can take the lesson before the fall comes. Heed the warnings that God sends.

Proverbs 11:2

When pride cometh, then cometh shame: but with the lowly is wisdom.

This ties pride and shame together. The shame often puts people in bondage. If you find yourself here, face it for what it is and humble yourself and deal with it. Many people get stuck in hurtful things because of the shame that would have to be faced to get out. Face it and turn to one who can get you out. The recognition of our need should cause us to turn to God for help to get us out of the mess we got ourselves into. The saint doesn’t want pride to come into his life. Pride hinders us in the work of God. If pride takes over God will find someone else to do the work. We don’t desire to shame people, but we also realized that shame follows pride.

Romans 12:3, 16

For I say, through the grace given unto me, to every man that is among you, not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think; but to think soberly, according as God hath dealt to every man the measure of faith. … Be of the same mind one toward another. Mind not high things, but condescend to men of low estate. Be not wise in your own conceits.

One of the biggest pitfalls is to think too highly of oneself. If you do, trouble awaits you. Keep among the lowly. If we stay among the lowly, we can move easily among humanity. We can go about God’s work. We can let God be glorified in our lives. We’re all on an equal level before God. God has a purpose for everyone. Live as God would have you to live.

Come down on the level with everyone else. Can you recite your great accomplishments? Look to help others more than to exalt yourself. When you retell the story, are you the great one of the story? Be not wise in your own conceits. Everyone has something to offer. Treat everyone with respect and decency.

Wisdom is passed down from generation to generation. Knowledge would think it knows more, but experience sees how life goes. Those who preceded us have something to offer us. Their wisdom is still relevant. Right is still right. Wrong is still wrong. We still need God’s guidance and direction.

There is still more for us to learn and grasp and take in. We don’t have to be proud and experience the fall that comes from it. Recognize your dependence on God.
