Holiness

1 Peter 1:13-16

Wherefore gird up the loins of your mind, be sober, and hope to the end for the grace that is to be brought unto you at the revelation of Jesus Christ; As obedient children, not fashioning yourselves according to the former lusts in your ignorance: But as he which hath called you is holy, so be ye holy in all manner of conversation; Because it is written, Be ye holy; for I am holy.

If we would have a relationship with God, holiness is part of the package. He won’t change for us. He is holy and pure, and we need to become as he is. (See Matthew 5:8) If you would have a relationship with God, you need a pure heart. Be holy in all areas of your conduct. Being holy is a state of being and a way of life. Holiness will produce some things in your life. It enables you to have a relationship with God and enjoy his presence.

Hebrews 12:14

Follow peace with all men, and holiness, without which no man shall see the Lord;

Holiness is important for us to be able to know God here. It is needed in the lives of mankind. It includes justification and sanctification. It is having the Spirit of God within to keep you pure.

Titus 2:1-8

But speak thou the things which become sound doctrine: That the aged men be sober, grave, temperate, sound in faith, in charity, in patience. The aged women likewise, that they be in behaviour as becometh holiness, not false accusers, not given to much wine, teachers of good things; That they may teach the young women to be sober, to love their husbands, to love their children, To be discreet, chaste, keepers at home, good, obedient to their own husbands, that the word of God be not blasphemed. Young men likewise exhort to be sober minded. In all things shewing thyself a pattern of good works: in doctrine shewing uncorruptness, gravity, sincerity, Sound speech, that cannot be condemned; that he that is of the contrary part may be ashamed, having no evil thing to say of you.

There is behavior appropriate to holiness. Holiness goes beyond appearance to our behavior. It is about a state of being; it involves your behavior, demeanor, outlook and attitudes. Holiness is more than just modesty. It is something within that produces good things on the outside. Love and patience and faith are part of holiness. Those who are older and have walked with God longer should model what holiness is so that the younger ones will have an example to follow. We should desire to pass on the right model.

Down through the years the message of holiness has been opposed; in part because some who taught it aren’t living it. We want to be a good example of holiness so that others can see it. Most people learn better when they have an example to follow. We need to think about the effect of our lives.

We want to know the truth. We want to get a clear picture of things as they are. We want people to look on and see good there in our lives.

Hebrews 12:9-16

Furthermore we have had fathers of our flesh which corrected us, and we gave them reverence; shall we not much rather be in subjection unto the Father of spirits, and live? For they verily for a few days chastened us after their own pleasure; but he for our profit, that we might be partakers of his holiness. Now no chastening for the present seemeth to be joyous, but grievous: nevertheless afterward it yieldeth the peaceable fruit of righteousness unto them which are exercised thereby. Wherefore lift up the hands which hang down, and the feeble knees; And make straight paths for your feet, lest that which is lame be turned out of the way; but let it rather be healed. Follow peace with all men, and holiness, without which no man shall see the Lord; Looking diligently lest any man fail of the grace of God; lest any root of bitterness springing up trouble you, and thereby many be defiled; Lest there be any fornicator, or profane person, as Esau, who for one morsel of meat sold his birthright.

We may need some correction. God may have to point some things out to us to help us to be holy. Some correction may be painful and forceful, so that we can get the point. Sometimes the message may come our way through the blunt voice. It isn’t our mission in life to be blunt, but if the message comes that way, we need to be able to take it. We should want to know when things aren’t as they should be in our lives so that those things can be changed. If we let it work as it should, correction will bring good things in us.

Holiness is more than behaviors, it is a change in the temperament, spirit, and attitudes. These also need to be pure. Bitterness defiles as much as bad behavior does. Holiness will produce the fruits of the Spirit. Holiness is about getting the spirit as it should be and the rest will come into line.

2 Corinthians 7:1

Having therefore these promises, dearly beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God.

We need to be pure both without and within. He speaks of the promises at the end of chapter 6. There will be things you’ll have to separate yourself from. Some things that are a problem for one may not be a problem for others. God will deal with us about what is a problem for us. He will work with each one to help keep each one pure. Be tuned to hear what God has to say.

Romans 6:19-22

I speak after the manner of men because of the infirmity of your flesh: for as ye have yielded your members servants to uncleanness and to iniquity unto iniquity; even so now yield your members servants to righteousness unto holiness. For when ye were the servants of sin, ye were free from righteousness. What fruit had ye then in those things whereof ye are now ashamed? For the end of those things is death. But now being made free from sin, and become servants to God, ye have your fruit unto holiness, and the end everlasting life.

When God purifies your heart, the fruit of your life will change. It will change in every aspect of your life. We need something on the inside that will bring good things to the outside. It’s holiness of spirit as well as of behavior. We want God to apply correction wherever it is needed. He will purify the defiled and then walk with them. We want the fruits of holiness in us. Holiness encompasses the whole being.
