And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of man be lifted up: That whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have eternal life. For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.
When Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness it was so those bitten by the serpents could be spared. Jesus was lifted up so that we could be saved from the bite of sin.
Eternal life is found in Christ. We can have it down here and throughout eternity. It doesn’t just mean that we’ll live forever. The soul will go on throughout eternity whether or not we have eternal life. Eternal life has to do with how that eternity will be spent. If we have eternal life, we’ll spend eternity in the presence of God. Eternal life is something we can enjoy here, but has to do with how we spend eternity. It gives us hope for the life to come.
1 John 1:2
(For the life was manifested, and we have seen it, and bear witness, and shew unto you that eternal life, which was with the Father, and was manifested unto us;)
Eternal life is Jesus. He came and made a way for us to walk with him. You have eternal life when his Spirit dwells in you. While you have him you have life. If you turn aside from him, you no longer have eternal life, but he will still be eternal life to those who have him.
These words spake Jesus, and lifted up his eyes to heaven, and said, Father, the hour is come; glorify thy Son, that thy Son also may glorify thee: As thou hast given him power over all flesh, that he should give eternal life to as many as thou hast given him. And this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent.
Eternal life is to know God and to know Jesus. We can talk to him and know he hears us. He is right here with us to give us what we need and to help us. This is the day where we can all know God ourselves.
1 John 5:11-13, 20
And this is the record, that God hath given to us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. He that hath the Son hath life; and he that hath not the Son of God hath not life. These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life, and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God.
And we know that the Son of God is come, and hath given us an understanding, that we may know him that is true, and we are in him that is true, even in his Son Jesus Christ. This is the true God, and eternal life.
When we have the life of Christ within, we have eternal life. If you let go of this life, you can lose eternal life. You don’t have to let go. Hang onto the life of Christ.
We can know and be in him that is true and recognize him as eternal life. We can have eternal life because he has come into our hearts. The life we find in him is what gives us hope of being eternally with God. Our eternal reward is to go to be with him and to enjoy his presence forever.
But after thy hardness and impenitent heart treasurest up unto thyself wrath against the day of wrath and revelation of the righteous judgment of God; Who will render to every man according to his deeds: To them who by patient continuance in well doing seek for glory and honour and immortality, eternal life: But unto them that are contentious, and do not obey the truth, but obey unrighteousness, indignation and wrath,
This is encouragement to continue in the way that is right. If we continue in this way, we can be with God forever in heaven.
Then Peter began to say unto him, Lo, we have left all, and have followed thee. And Jesus answered and said, Verily I say unto you, There is no man that hath left house, or brethren, or sisters, or father, or mother, or wife, or children, or lands, for my sake, and the gospel's, But he shall receive an hundredfold now in this time, houses, and brethren, and sisters, and mothers, and children, and lands, with persecutions; and in the world to come eternal life.
Peter wondered what was in serving God for him. Their focus at this time was on a literal kingdom. Jesus told Peter there was plenty of reward in going the right way. It’s 100 times better to go in the way that is right than to follow the world in this life. Everyone has troubles to face, but we can have the blessings now and can look forward to the blessings of an eternity spent with God. It’s worth it to invest in heaven here. We have a little bit of heaven to go to heaven in.
Paul, a servant of God, and an apostle of Jesus Christ, according to the faith of God's elect, and the acknowledging of the truth which is after godliness; In hope of eternal life, which God, that cannot lie, promised before the world began;
We can have a hope and expectation of something to come, as well as enjoying the life of Christ here. Paul had had a glimpse of heaven, and he had a hope of going to be there. He was determined to be faithful. He had an expectation of going to be with the Lord. We can have the life of Christ within and the expectation of going to be with God, too.
1 Timothy 6:17-19
Charge them that are rich in this world, that they be not highminded, nor trust in uncertain riches, but in the living God, who giveth us richly all things to enjoy; That they do good, that they be rich in good works, ready to distribute, willing to communicate; Laying up in store for themselves a good foundation against the time to come, that they may lay hold on eternal life.
Those who have possessions were to use them for good. Instead of holding onto earthly investments, we should be putting our treasure in heaven. We need to lay hold on the promise of heaven. There is something for us to give ourselves to. We should give our lives to God and keep them committed to him. It matters how we live and the things we do.
It is more than just meeting Jesus. We need to hold onto what Jesus gives us and not let go. We need to hold onto him until we reach our eternal home.
1 Timothy 6:11-12
But thou, O man of God, flee these things; and follow after righteousness, godliness, faith, love, patience, meekness. Fight the good fight of faith, lay hold on eternal life, whereunto thou art also called, and hast professed a good profession before many witnesses.
Don’t let go of eternal life. If we keep our relationship with God, we can lay hold on eternal life and have confidence in our soul and its place in eternity. If you loose the life here, you can’t have confidence of spending eternity with God. Sin separates between man and God. If you don’t have the assurance that all is well between you and God, you need to get it. Be faithful to the end. Keep the faith.
