Beloved, when I gave all diligence to write unto you of the common salvation, it was needful for me to write unto you, and exhort you that ye should earnestly contend for the faith which was once delivered unto the saints. For there are certain men crept in unawares, who were before of old ordained to this condemnation, ungodly men, turning the grace of our God into lasciviousness, and denying the only Lord God, and our Lord Jesus Christ.
It is needful for us to earnestly contend for the faith. There are bad things in the world, but this shouldn’t prevent us from serving God. We need to be sure we’re doing well in our walk with God.
We could focus on the bad things of the world, but, what about us? We need to focus on our faith and the life we live.
But ye, beloved, building up yourselves on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Ghost, Keep yourselves in the love of God, looking for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ unto eternal life.
We need faith to be built up in us. You can’t do this by looking at how bad everyone else is. It doesn’t help our faith to dwell on disappointments. God is able to handle his own business. He knows how to handle those that are out of line with him. Prayer is the help for discouragement. Praying in the Holy Ghost isn’t calling down fire, but asking God for mercy for them. Instead of focusing on the trouble, go to God in prayer. He is able to uphold that which is right. "Keep yourselves in the love of God…" Keep the love of God in you. The devil wants to discourage you, but we need to keep on praying. Don’t let the love of God grow cold in you. Stay built up in the things of God.
2 John 1-8
The elder unto the elect lady and her children, whom I love in the truth: and not I only, but also all they that have known the truth; For the truth’s sake, which dwelleth in us, and shall be with us for ever. Grace be with you, mercy, and peace, from God the Father, and from the Lord Jesus Christ, the Son of the Father, in truth and love. I rejoiced greatly that I found of thy children walking in truth, as we have received a commandment from the Father. And now I beseech thee, lady, not as though I wrote a new commandment unto thee, but that which we had from the beginning, that we love one another. And this is love, that we walk after his commandments. This is the commandment, That, as ye have heard from the beginning, ye should walk in it. For many deceivers are entered into the world, who confess not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh. This is a deceiver and an antichrist. Look to yourselves, that we lose not those things which we have wrought, but that we receive a full reward.
These are letters of warning to consider what lies ahead and to keep hold on God. There are things to face and go through, but we need to keep our eyes on God. We can work hard to do a work for God; we don’t want to tear it down later. It takes time to build things, but it takes almost no time to tear something down. We don’t want to lose what we have wrought. Be faithful. Stay in the place where God wants you to be.
2 Peter 1:20-21; 2:1-3; 3:13-18
Knowing this first, that no prophecy of the scripture is of any private interpretation. For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost.
But there were false prophets also among the people, even as there shall be among you, who privily shall bring in damnable heresies, even denying the Lord that bought them, and bring upon themselves swift destruction. And many shall follow their pernicious ways: by reason of whom the way of truth shall be evil spoken of. And through covetousness shall they with feigned words make merchandise of you: whose judgment now of a long time lingereth not, and their damnation slumbereth not.
Nevertheless we, according to his promise, look for new heavens and a new earth, wherein dwelleth righteousness. Wherefore, beloved, seeing that ye look for such things, be diligent that ye may be found of him in peace, without spot, and blameless. And account that the longsuffering of our Lord is salvation; even as our beloved brother Paul also according to the wisdom given unto him hath written unto you; As also in all his epistles, speaking in them of these things; in which are some things hard to be understood, which they that are unlearned and unstable wrest, as they do also the other scriptures, unto their own destruction. Ye therefore, beloved, seeing ye know these things before, beware lest ye also, being led away with the error of the wicked, fall from your own stedfastness. But grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. To him be glory both now and for ever. Amen.
In the days of the prophets, there were also false prophets. Take what comes from God and hold onto it. We’re looking for something because of God’s promise. Stay true to God in spite of it all. Be patient and give God time to work. Stay in the place where God would have you to be. Keep your eyes on God.
Trouble is out there, falseness is out there, bad things happen out there, but hold onto Christ. We need to grow in grace and knowledge. We get this from God, not from focusing on the world’s troubles. Keep yourself where you need to be so that you can overcome.
Because thou hast kept the word of my patience, I also will keep thee from the hour of temptation, which shall come upon all the world, to try them that dwell upon the earth. Behold, I come quickly; hold that fast which thou hast, that no man take thy crown.
Because we keep his word, he will keep us. Everyone has to deal with trouble. "Behold, I come quickly; hold that fast which thou hast, that no man take thy crown." Don’t let discouragement cause you to throw away what you have. Hold onto what you have. Keep that love in you.
