But while he thought on these things, behold, the angel of the Lord appeared unto him in a dream, saying, Joseph, thou son of David, fear not to take unto thee Mary thy wife: for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Ghost. And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people from their sins. Now all this was done, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken of the Lord by the prophet, saying, Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us.
This speaks of Jesus as both Jesus and Emmanuel. These names refer to qualities of Jesus. Jesus is the Greek form of Joshua - which means, Savior. Jesus is God come down to man to be with us and to save us. Saved is not the same as religious. Salvation is deliverance from something. This says that it is deliverance from sin. Some people would go with a religious life that leaves them in their sins. Some people are hunting for forgiveness to escape God’s wrath, but aren’t looking for deliverance.
For the ways of man are before the eyes of the Lord, and he pondereth all his goings. His own iniquities shall take the wicked himself, and he shall be holden with the cords of his sins. He shall die without instruction: and in the greatness of his folly he shall go astray.
God sees everything we do. “His own iniquities shall take the wicked himself, and he shall be holden with the cords of his sins.” There are consequences for our actions and the choices that we make. The life of sin has some consequences and they aren’t very good. Sin binds people, brings bad consequences to their lives and makes them miserable. This is why mankind needs a Savior. The devil takes men captive with their sins. Jesus came to save people from their sins. This is more than a form. Just becoming a member of a church won’t save you. Jesus came to deliver you from something, and to make a difference in your life. To be saved is to be delivered from the power of sin.
The integrity of the upright shall guide them: but the perverseness of transgressors shall destroy them. Riches profit not in the day of wrath: but righteousness delivereth from death. The righteousness of the perfect shall direct his way: but the wicked shall fall by his own wickedness. The righteousness of the upright shall deliver them: but transgressors shall be taken in their own naughtiness.
Proverbs were written based on observations. If you are without righteousness, the only way to get it is for God to give you some. This gives us a picture of the awfulness of a life of sin. People need to see that the life of sin isn’t how life should be. The devil sells it as the good life, but people eventually find out that they were sold a lie. People need to realize that they need a Savior. If nothing is done, it will only get worse. It is a good thing when people realize that they need a Savior. Jesus came to be that Savior. Make an instantaneous start and cry out to God until you’re free. Jesus can set you free if you will seek him with all your heart.
There were present at that season some that told him of the Galileans, whose blood Pilate had mingled with their sacrifices. And Jesus answering said unto them, Suppose ye that these Galileans were sinners above all the Galileans, because they suffered such things? I tell you, Nay; but, except ye repent, ye shall all likewise perish. Or those eighteen, upon whom the tower in Siloam fell, and slew them, think ye that they were sinners above all men that dwelt in Jerusalem? I tell you, Nay; but, except ye repent, ye shall all likewise perish.
The message of both Jesus and John focused on repentance. If you would be saved, you need to repent. There needs to be a turning in your life for you to be saved. A man still in his sins isn’t delivered yet. You could put up a sign that says, “Bridge Out,” but unless people heed the warning and turn around, they’ll end up in the river. If nothing changes in your life, you haven’t bee delivered. If you’ll go to God in repentance, you can be set free. To be saved is to be delivered.
2 Corinthians 7:8-11
For though I made you sorry with a letter, I do not repent, though I did repent: for I perceive that the same epistle hath made you sorry, though it were but for a season. Now I rejoice, not that ye were made sorry, but that ye sorrowed to repentance: for ye were made sorry after a godly manner, that ye might receive damage by us in nothing. For godly sorrow worketh repentance to salvation not to be repented of: but the sorrow of this world worketh death. For behold this selfsame thing, that ye sorrowed after a godly sort, what carefulness it wrought in you, yea, what clearing of yourselves, yea, what indignation, yea, what fear, yea, what vehement desire, yea, what zeal, yea, what revenge! In all things ye have approved yourselves to be clear in this matter.
Paul had written and reprimanded these for some things. He was glad because it worked godly sorrow in them that brought repentance and then salvation. Repentance brings a turning from sin. Godly sorrow brings a hatred of sin. A form without repentance doesn’t bring salvation. “For behold this selfsame thing, that ye sorrowed after a godly sort, what carefulness it wrought in you, yea, what clearing of yourselves, yea, what indignation, yea, what fear, yea, what vehement desire, yea, what zeal, yea, what revenge! In all things ye have approved yourselves to be clear in this matter.” These are the fruits of repentance. Jesus came to set you free from sin. Come to God in repentance and then walk with him.
