Being Kept by God

Bro. David Chancellor

When you find Jesus, your life is changed radically.

John 17:11-15

And now I am no more in the world, but these are in the world, and I come to thee. Holy Father, keep through thine own name those whom thou hast given me, that they may be one, as we are. While I was with them in the world, I kept them in thy name: those that thou gavest me I have kept, and none of them is lost, but the son of perdition; that the scripture may be fulfilled. And now come I to thee; and these things I speak in the world that they might have my joy fulfilled in themselves. I have given them thy word; and the world hath hated them, because they are not of the world, even as I am not of the world. I pray not that thou shouldest take them out of the world, but that thou shouldest keep them from the evil.

We stand at the end of one year and the beginning of another.  We can see how God has kept us, but also how we need him to keep us through the year that is ahead.  Jesus kept his disciples while he was with them, and he was concerned that they would be kept.  We also need to be kept from evil.  He can bring us through whatever lies ahead on the road of life.  We don’t know what a day will hold, and since life is uncertain, we need God to keep us, not only from natural dangers, but also from that which would destroy our souls.  Without the keeping power of God, the disciples would soon have been split apart.  Without the keeping grace of God, we would soon be split apart from God.

1 Peter 1:3-5

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, which according to his abundant mercy hath begotten us again unto a lively hope by the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead. To an inheritance incorruptible, and undefiled, and that fadeth not away, reserved in heaven for you, Who are kept by the power of God through faith unto salvation ready to be revealed in the last time.

“…who are kept by the power of God…” Jesus prayed that God would kept them by his power.  It was given to them by and in the Holy Ghost.  Without the Spirit of God, we won’t make it.  Determination is good, but alone, it isn’t enough.  By the power of God, we can face things that we wouldn’t otherwise be able to face.  We’re very dependent on the power of God.  We need to draw on God each day to get what we need for what we face.

Isaiah 42:5-6

Thus saith God the Lord, he that created the heavens, and stretched them out; he that spread forth the earth, and that which cometh out of it; he that giveth breath unto the people upon it, and spirit to them that walk therein: I the Lord have called thee in righteousness, and will hold thine hand, and will keep thee, and give thee for a covenant of the people, for a light of the Gentiles:

The God that made us and put all of this in motion said, “I the Lord have called thee in righteousness, and will hold thine hand, and will keep thee…” This talks about Jesus.  Jesus walked in the assurance that he was in the hand of God.  God wants this for us, also - to have a close walk with him.  God wants to take us by the hand and walk through life with us.  God will keep us if we keep our hand in his.  If you turn loose and run away, what’s to keep you?  God knows the events of our lives, and knows how to bring us through all that lies ahead, even when we don’t understand why.

Isaiah 26:1-4

In that day shall this song be sung in the land of Judah; We have a strong city; salvation will God appoint for walls and bulwarks. Open ye the gates, that the righteous nation which keepeth the truth may enter in. Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee: because he trusteth in thee. Trust ye in the Lord for ever: for in the Lord Jehovah is everlasting strength:

“Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee…” God can give us a strong city. He can help us to go through things that are hard.  He is the source of our strength.  We need to keep our minds stayed on him.  We can look to him for guidance and strength.  His keeping grace comes when we keep our minds on him.  When we seek him, he will help us know what we need to do.  He can give us peace in trouble.  He can help us as we go through things.  Everyone has trials to face.  Our minds need to be stayed on God, our Keeper.

Philippians 4:6-7

Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God. And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.

We don’t have to face this year with anxiety.  As we face the trials of life, we can go to God and expect to receive help from him.  If we had gone to God, some things would have been easier to go through.  Do you take your requests to God?  Be free to pray.  This is how you will be kept.  Prayer is more than a routine; it is how we make our requests known to God.  If the peace of God would keep you, take your every need to God.

2 Thessalonians 3:1-3

Finally, brethren, pray for us, that the word of the Lord may have free course, and be glorified, even as it is with you: And that we may be delivered from unreasonable and wicked men: for all men have not faith. But the Lord is faithful, who shall stablish you, and keep you from evil.

Paul wanted his life to make a difference for God.  He wanted the word of God to go out.  “But the Lord is faithful, who shall stablish you, and keep you from evil.”  It’s good to be established.  The Lord can do this for you.  He can give you something that will make you consistent and stable.  He can keep us from evil and help us to do what is right.   God allows some trials and tests to come.  He will bring us through everything life brings our way.

Jude 20-25

But ye, beloved, building up yourselves on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Ghost, Keep yourselves in the love of God, looking for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ unto eternal life. And of some having compassion, making a difference: And others save with fear, pulling them out of the fire; hating even the garment spotted by the flesh. Now unto him that is able to keep you from falling, and to present you faultless before the presence of his glory with exceeding joy, To the only wise God our Saviour, be glory and majesty, dominion and power, both now and ever. Amen.

“But ye, beloved, building up yourselves on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Ghost, keep yourselves in the love of God…” God will see us through.  Failure doesn’t have to be.  We have to stay in the love of God and in the center of God’s will to succeed.  You can’t expect to draw on the grace of God if you get outside of the will of God.  If you pursue things outside of God’s will, he won’t force you to stay.  Seek God to help you to desire to do what is right.  The devil would present you with many things to try to draw your mind away from God.  Stay in the center of his will and plan.  “…Now unto him that is able to keep you from falling…” You don’t have to expect failure.  You can live it when you stay in the center of his will.  He will give you grace and strength to bear what he allows to come your way.  God gets the glory in the lives that he keeps.  He won’t force you to live for him, but he will keep you when you choose to follow him.  He gives the power to live out that choice.  Let God keep you through all that comes your way this year.
