The spirit of understandingBro. David Chancellor

Church is about God, his work, salvation of souls, preparation for heaven, and a walk with God. "Fine oration, great singing, and wonderful religious entertainment is not what it's all about." The church is about work; bringing others to God.
The cry is "Understand; be of an understanding heart." We are continually learning. Understand wisdom - "They are plain to him that understandeth, and right to them that find knowledge." Some don't understand... Some don't believe that God's way is the way to go. We need God to open up our understanding. There came a point in the reformation that people could quote chapter and verse, but there was a lack of understanding and application. We might be able to reproduce what they said, but that's no guarantee of understanding. If you don't get what God intended and have results in your life, you've missed the point. To him that doesn't understand its all mystery.
"The fear of the Lord, that is wisdom; The people of God aren't looked on by the world as being wise. The wisdom of man isn't what we're looking for. We need the "thus saith the Lord..." "and to depart from evil is understanding." If you don't depart from evil - you really didn't understand. When you measure up is when the understanding takes place. Until you can make application of what you've learned - understanding has not set in.
(Description of Jesus) "The spirit of the Lord shall rest upon him, the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the Lord." We need this same spirit. We need to have this understanding. It's more than just scripture quoting. You have to apply it to life. Making use of knowledge is where the real value lies. If we will understand we need the spirit of God. Christ didn't just know the law - he knew how to explain the meaning of the law. The real issue wasn't just what it said, but what it was all about, the purpose and principle involved. They had taken to just doing the things with no idea why. We need the Lord to open things up to us. We want to get the application for life. We need the spirit of understanding on us. Christ judged with righteousness. It may seem that all we have are sight and hearing - we need that spirit to help us make right judgments and take right actions. People speak and write to influence what you do. We need the spirit of understanding to stop and think things through. Christ was not influenced by the popular positions of his day. He was able to understand things as they ought to be.
Colossians 1:9, 10
His desire was that they might be filled with all wisdom and understanding. Why? So that they could be pleasing to God, be fruitful in every good work and increase in knowledge. Find out what it is God really wants. Many keep the letter, but don't have the spirit. Understand what God would have. He wants to put his spirit in us so that we can be understanding. We're here to edify one another; to help bear the burden; to get some understanding of the word of God.
1 Corinthians 14:14-20
The use of Latin in the Catholic church is an example of unedifying speaking "in tongues." It doesn't have much meaning. Only those that have bothered to study it will understand what was said. Preach in the language of the people; this goes for singing, prayer, and exhortation also. How can the congregation say "amen" if they don't understand? It should be that it comes across as clear as it can. Paul saw what the purpose of the church was. The purpose: "that I might teach others also." It's not about making a "worthless show." The preacher isn't the only one who's able to teach - we can all learn from one another; drawing inspiration from one another. A testimony can teach. Our commission is to go and teach and understand what God would have us to do.
2 Peter 2:11, 12
Speaking here of false prophets, ministers don't bring railing accusations of them before God.. be careful what you say about others and what your attitude is - you may not understand some things. God may not reveal it to you and if he doesn't there will be things you won't understand. If we don't understand we need to be careful the attitude we take. Sometimes there's more to it than we understand. Let's be careful not to get a wrong attitude. Once we understand that we don't understand - we are on the road to understanding. If we don't understand we need to watch our words and attitudes to others. We want others to know and do what God would have them do. We want enlightenment for all.
Pay attention to what you're doing. The days are evil. "Wherefore be ye not unwise, but understanding what the will of the Lord is." Find what it is that the Lord would have you to do, and do it. There's a work for us to do - do God's will, fulfill his purpose.
