This psalm encourages us to lift up God. We should have worship for God. We want to have a successful worship toward God. "Sing unto the Lord, bless his name; shew forth his salvation from day to day." Worship is an all-time thing so far as God's people are concerned. God wants us to worship him even in inconvenient times and places. He wants us to worship him before the heathen. We need a reverence for God so that others can recognize we serve him. There are two kinds of worship: true worship and vain worship.
Christ describes these people's worship as "vain worship" or worship with no value; outward; man focused; feeding the flesh; often done with pomp and circumstance and much ritual. Worship is about the condition of the heart. There are many forms that many can follow, but it misses what God intended. It is important that our focus not be upon the man, but upon God. God is not honored by man worship. Idolatry was a very involved form of worship, as that goes. Worship must come from the heart.
Revelation 13:6-8, 11, 12
There is worship for each beast here (the beast being representative of false religion). Paul described idolatry in Ephesus: "I fought with the beast at Ephesus." People worship their religion and church. They can take the name of the Lord in vain and that seems to be no big deal to them, but just you take the name of their church in vain and you might get a black eye. We aren't here to worship a system of religion or an organization of man. We're here to worship God. People need to hear about God and what he can do for a soul. They had a worship of religion. We have a simple service - because we're here to worship God. Our heart should always be turned toward God. "All whose names are not written in the Lamb's book of life" can worship the beast, but they won't make heaven so long as they do. God wants us to make it as we worship him. Even the devil possessed have a form of worship. But WHAT do we worship? Do we have a true worship or a vain worship? People can talk about scriptures, but do they have a genuine reverence and worship of God?
"Every knee shall bow and every tongue shall confess that Jesus is Lord." This includes both sinner and saint. Just bowing the knee and saying that Jesus is Lord is not enough. True worship goes further in that obedience is exercised in the life. A life where people say Jesus is Lord, but don't do the things that he says is a life that is practicing vain worship. True worship has a real respect and reverence for Christ. We need to be obedient to Christ. This needs to be the case each day of our life. God's people want to know what he wants. Are we obedient to God's word? What is the value of the form if there is no obedience in the life?
Jesus speaks of the true worship. It is not "place oriented". It is not a question of where, but what is at work in the heart of man? it is not "where you're at", but in the heart. Christ came to do away with temple worship. "...the hour cometh, when ye shall neither in this mountain, nor yet at Jerusalem, worship the Father..." The church is not a building. It is God working in the heart of his people. It's bigger and goes beyond meeting in a building (though meeting in a building is not bad). We will endeavor in every aspect of our lives to be obedient. Truth can be shown to us wherever God opens it up to us. Worship should go on wherever we go. We should be obedient in all things.
Revelations 22:8, 9
Worship God - keep the sayings of this book. Recognize God as the final authority. He has the final say. Make the sayings of the book a part of your life.
The glory of those that follow the Lamb whithersoever he goeth are the true worshipers. Sing the new song. All those who have been born again can sing the song of redemption (the new song). Men would try to limit. Be God centered. Go God's way. Be tuned to hear from heaven. Increase in understanding and obedience. "They shall rest from their labors and their works shall follow them." Our labors should be focused toward serving God and doing the things that are right. We need to worship in spirit and in truth.
