God presented to Ezekiel a picture of some of the conditions of the people of Israel. These bones were very dry - had been a long time in this condition. We may no see things as God sees them, but God can see it as it really is. The word of the Lord is what made the difference here. If Ezekiel had spoken his own words, life would not have come. The words of God can change a life. The world around us appears that hope is lost and things are on a downhill slide, but the word of God is what can make the difference. Hope isn't lost - you don't have to stay dead in sin. God can bring life to you. God can still raise up to him an army of saints. "Is the arm of the Lord shortened that he cannot save?" God's word will have an effect. Our wisdom won't make the difference, but God's word will. God and his word will make the difference to the world. If a sinner tries to live a Christian life, he will have a major struggle. It takes God to make the change and give life and victory. We may have battles, but it is not a continual struggle. The word of God can make the difference. There is a shortage of the word of God in the world today. We need to be prepared each and every day for the end of time to come - we have no guarantee of another day. Today is the day of deliverance.
The 2 parts go together: 1) Bringing to life 2) Bringing together. These had to be resurrected and filled with God before they would come together. The picture of the 2 sticks is a picture of God saving souls and bringing them together. Judah and Israel had been separated into two kingdoms ever since the end of Solomon's reign. Jereboam instituted idolatry to keep the kingdom (10 tribes) for himself. They shouldn't have bought that as their history told them differently. he didn't accomplish what he set out to do. When men follow men, there is no keeping power in that. We can't keep anything going in our own power. Jereboam used the ways and ideas of man to keep them separate. Sin and falseness separates. God and his word brings together. Jesus is the "one king". There is only one king and one kingdom that belongs to God - Jesus is the king. They will leave behind the things that were contrary to God. We want God as our God and king. David and Solomon were the literal peak of the kingdom of Israel. With Jesus as king it is an obedient people. You are part of the kingdom by a new birth. God places the members as he wills and plans. When we're totally committed to God, we will be brought together. It is through the Spirit and word of God.
That which was spoken of in Ezekiel is here come to pass. God, through Christ, brought unity. We've been made a part of Christ's kingdom through salvation. He didn't break down the wall between sin and right, but the walls between people that sin built. Sin divides people up, but the Spirit of God brings unity. God brings peace and would draw night to all of us. All need what Christ came to bring. "both reconciled to God... Jesus made God accessible to us all. We have direct access to God. We are no more strangers and foreigners, but fellow citizens through Christ. We have hope through faith in Christ and can be brought together with the people of God. The word of God brings life. every field would look like a burnt over field if you don't put any seed in it. Plant the word of God. Give them "thus saith the Lord."
