1 Timothy 1:12-17

He refers to Jesus' pattern of mercy.. A pattern is an example that is meant to be duplicated. Mercy - compassion, pity, grace, forgiveness; implies that more kindness has been given than justice requires... Paul was a blasphemer, a persecutor, injurious (all these through ignorance).. yet God had mercy.. A blasphemer is coarse, abusive toward man and impious toward God.. He annoyed, harassed, and harmed others for what they believed.. he was unfairly, unjustly harmful toward others, yet God showed mercy. It was a pattern of mercy .. it is meant to be duplicated.. for whom? "for them which should hereafter believe" God is willing to repeat this pattern to all who believe...

Ephesians 2:1-8

The same example of mercy is here.. you did these thing in the past.. but God.. who is rich in mercy.. raised you up from that.. Paul brought the gospel to the Ephesians... The pattern of mercy continues.. we live in the day of mercy and grace...

John 1:16-17

2 periods of time mentioned: Moses' day - the day of the law; Jesus' day - the day of grace. Under the law, every transgression and every disobedience received a just recompense of reward...

James 2:13

"mercy rejoiceth against judgment".. Judgment requires payment - but mercy rejoiceth against judgment...

Romans 5:20

"where sin abounded, grace did much more abound..."

1 Timothy 1:15

God intended this pattern of mercy to be continued - in every situation and every circumstance this is truth - Christ came to save sinners...

Romans 2:12-16

There's a day of judgment coming - in that day there will be no grace - he'll judge your secrets

1 Timothy 5:24-25

Some men's sins are open beforehand (no longer a secret) - confession is made, pardon is sought, mercy is given... Some men's sins follow them to judgment - not confessed beforehand, not pardoned from... Pity the man who's sin follows him to the judgment - those that receive mercy now can have boldness at the judgment...

1 John 4:17

Boldness in judgment - as he is so are we in this world - the newness of life that comes with God's saving grace.. you are in need of mercy if you carry the guilt of the past and if you still sin..

Hebrews 4:16

Someday God's throne will be a judgment seat.. but, today his throne is a throne of grace.. God has shown a pattern - a willingness to extend mercy.. "blest mercy's waiting at the throne of grace"...
