1 Corinthians 3:1-3
As Paul writes to these, he tells them, "You're still carnal." God deals with people where they are. He deals with what is there in the life. God would have us to be a spiritual people and have a close walk with him. Paul would have rather spoken to these as a spiritual people. For God to speak to us of deep spiritual things, the heart needs to be ready to receive it.
"To be carnally minded is death, but to be spiritually minded is life and peace." (Verse 7) The carnal mind is "enmity" - it's reflected in an attitude that can work in people. In the parable of the talents, the carnal mind is "we won't have this man to rule over us!" Enmity - a hateful attitude or action existing with the carnal mind. Rebellion is not a fruit of the spirit of God. The saints let go of the carnal mind. We won't prosper while the carnal mind is present. God would have us be subject to him. We will have a tough time serving God if we aren't subject to him. The preacher shouldn't have to preach the "submit" message constantly. If he does have to, we need to be concerned about that. Carnality and spirituality don't go together.
That which was given by Moses is a carnal commandment for a carnal people. The spiritual makes things better. God had to give a carnal commandment for a carnal people. When people begin to bring back the carnal commandment, you begin to wonder if they are a carnal people. God wanted us to come to a place where we don't need a carnal commands and rules. There is a spiritual something God wants to do in the heart.
Speaks of meals and drinks and worship. It won't solve the problem that exists with the conscience. Do we need carnal commandments to regulate our life, when God has something better?
Jesus sat down on the right hand of God and has overcome the power of the enemy. Many today would point to "speaking in tongues" as evidence of the Holy Ghost. However, the presence of God's Holy Spirit is the evidence of what God has done. God's law should be written in your heart. If the Spirit is within, you should want to do what God is pleased with. We need God's love - the fulfilling of God's law. The Holy Spirit writes the law of God in the heart. Have a genuine concern for your fellowman and for your own actions and the consequences of them.
The hearing is NOT what makes us right, but it is the life we are living. What do you do? We need to be a people that WANT to do what is right. When the Gentiles have not heard the law, but still are able to do it, that should be a lesson to us. Religion hasn't progressed a great deal. We have to be a "doer" rather than just a "hearer." God would have us to be where it is just natural to do things that are good. Our life needs to show the work of God written in our hearts. When the law is in your heart, it will show in your life and you will be ready for spiritual things.
God provided a way that we don't have to be in sin anymore. We don't have to go along with God thundering carnal commands to us. We can live our life to be pleasing to God. We don't have that old carnal nature anymore, but now we have the spirit of God within.
