That we should be to the praise of his glory, who first trusted in Christ. In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise, which is the earnest of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, unto the praise of his glory.
To trust Christ, you have to know him. The word of truth is the message of Christ. People need to hear the message of Christ. Our work is to carry the message of Christ. Its the message of Christ that matters most of all.
1 Corinthians 2:1-5
And I, brethren, when I came to you, came not with excellence of speech or of wisdom, declaring unto you the testimony of God. For I determined not to know any thing among you, save Jesus Christ, and him crucified. And I was with you in weakness, and in fear, and in much trembling. And my speech and my preaching was not with enticing words of mans wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power: That your faith should not stand in the wisdom of men, but in the power of God.
Paul viewed the message of Christ as very important. He wanted the people to understand what Christ was to them. He didnt give a great intellectual presentation. He wanted them to know Jesus. We arent trying to impress people with our great abilities. We want them to see God in us. People need to see Jesus in all that we do. Let the Spirit of God be in you and through you. Paul wanted these to have faith in the power of God.
1 Corinthians 3:10-15
According to the grace of God which is given unto me, as a wise masterbuilder, I have laid the foundation, and another buildeth thereon. But let every man take heed how he buildeth thereupon. For other foundation can no man lay than that is laid, which is Jesus Christ. Now if any man build upon this foundation gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, stubble; Every mans work shall be made manifest: for the day shall declare it, because it shall be revealed by fire; and the fire shall try every mans work of what sort it is. If any mans work abide which he hath built thereupon, he shall receive a reward. If any mans work shall be burned, he shall suffer loss: but he himself shall be saved; yet so as by fire.
Christ is the foundation. This is the starting point of the gospel. Everything else is built on Christ. Jesus is the common ground. What will you build on the foundation? Some directions arent the way to go. Mans ideas arent lasting. If we build according to the word of God, it will last. If you build without Christ, it wont last. The trials of life are for our good; they help us to see how were building. We want to build a building that will last throughout eternity. If people will find Christ, theyll find what will work.
2 Corinthians 11:3-4
But I fear, lest by any means, as the serpent beguiled Eve through his subtilty, so your minds should be corrupted from the simplicity that is in Christ. For if he that cometh preacheth another Jesus, whom we have not preached, or if ye receive another spirit, which ye have not received, or another gospel, which ye have not accepted, ye might well bear with him.
Theres only one Jesus. We need to know how he really is. Paul was concerned that some would turn their focus away from Christ. There are many that come and preach the prosperity gospel. Jesus wasnt rich while he was here. People should want to prosper spiritually. The gospel of Jesus is about prosperity in the soul. If you come to know Jesus, youll be able to tell when its the real Christ.
But I would ye should understand, brethren, that the things which happened unto me have fallen out rather unto the furtherance of the gospel; So that my bonds in Christ are manifest in all the palace, and in all other places; And many of the brethren in the Lord, waxing confident by my bonds, are much more bold to speak the word without fear. Some indeed preach Christ even of envy and strife; and some also of good will: The one preach Christ of contention, not sincerely, supposing to add affliction to my bonds: But the other of love, knowing that I am set for the defence of the gospel. What then? notwithstanding, every way, whether in pretence, or in truth, Christ is preached; and I therein do rejoice, yea, and will rejoice.
Paul loved Christ and desired for the message of Christ to reach others. He was glad that the message was getting out, even though he was in chains. We can speak up for Jesus, even if there are obstacles in our paths. Some would carry the gospel through argument and debate. We want to carry the message of Christ through good will. We should share the message because we love Christ and because we love others. We need the love of God within us, so we can talk about him as a friend. Paul rejoiced because Christ was preached. We can find satisfaction in seeing others find Christ. If people learn the scripture without knowing Christ, theyve missed out, and may have put things in the way of knowing him. Carry the message of Christ. Its what people need.
