If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him. But let him ask in faith, nothing wavering. For he that wavereth is like a wave of the sea driven with the wind and tossed.
James wrote this because he realized that there was a spiritual side of life that is wisdom. The wisdom that God gives is spiritual. He gives us the one that can guide us in the way that is right.
For this cause we also, since the day we heard it, do not cease to pray for you, and to desire that ye might be filled with the knowledge of his will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding;
Paul prayed for wisdom for these. He wanted them to develop and grow. If we would do a good work, we need wisdom. You wont see good things accomplished with a haphazard approach. We need guidance from God.
Wherefore I also, after I heard of your faith in the Lord Jesus, and love unto all the saints, Cease not to give thanks for you, making mention of you in my prayers; That the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give unto you the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of him: The eyes of your understanding being enlightened; that ye may know what is the hope of his calling, and what the riches of the glory of his inheritance in the saints, And what is the exceeding greatness of his power to us-ward who believe, according to the working of his mighty power,
Those who have known God should pray for the new converts to grow in God. Gods Spirit will provide the wisdom needed. He can help us to make the right choice, even when we cant see the whole picture.
My son, if thou wilt receive my words, and hide my commandments with thee; So that thou incline thine ear unto wisdom, and apply thine heart to understanding; Yea, if thou criest after knowledge, and liftest up thy voice for understanding; If thou seekest her as silver, and searchest for her as for hid treasures; Then shalt thou understand the fear of the LORD, and find the knowledge of God. For the LORD giveth wisdom: out of his mouth cometh knowledge and understanding. He layeth up sound wisdom for the righteous: he is a buckler to them that walk uprightly. He keepeth the paths of judgment, and preserveth the way of his saints. Then shalt thou understand righteousness, and judgment, and equity; yea, every good path. When wisdom entereth into thine heart, and knowledge is pleasant unto thy soul; Discretion shall preserve thee, understanding shall keep thee: To deliver thee from the way of the evil man, from the man that speaketh froward things;
Wisdom will keep us in the good and right path. If thou seekest her as silver, and searchest for her as for hid treasures; People seek money quite readily. Keep your job in perspective. Stick to the critical path. Make the pursuit of Gods divine guidance your highest priority. Seek God first and foremost. Wisdom will cause us to treat people fairly.
Who is a wise man and endued with knowledge among you? let him shew out of a good conversation his works with meekness of wisdom. But if ye have bitter envying and strife in your hearts, glory not, and lie not against the truth. This wisdom descendeth not from above, but is earthly, sensual, devilish. For where envying and strife is, there is confusion and every evil work. But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, and easy to be intreated, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality, and without hypocrisy. And the fruit of righteousness is sown in peace of them that make peace.
This is the wisdom that James was referring to in chapter 1. He had no doubt met those who thought that they were endowed with great knowledge. There are some characteristics of the individual that reveal true wisdom. A wise man can adapt when he realizes that he his slightly off. Strive and envy indicate a problem within. Have the kind of wisdom that is shown in verse 17 (But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, and easy to be intreated, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality, and without hypocrisy.) This isnt about the intellect so much as it is about the quality of the person. We need to be approachable. The Spirit of God working in us produces these qualities. If we ask God for his wisdom and seek after it, we will have the wisdom that comes from God.
