And when one of them that sat at meat with him heard these things, he said unto him, Blessed is he that shall eat bread in the kingdom of God. Then said he unto him, A certain man made a great supper, and bade many: And sent his servant at supper time to say to them that were bidden, Come; for all things are now ready. And they all with one consent began to make excuse. The first said unto him, I have bought a piece of ground, and I must needs go and see it: I pray thee have me excused. And another said, I have bought five yoke of oxen, and I go to prove them: I pray thee have me excused. And another said, I have married a wife, and therefore I cannot come. So that servant came, and shewed his lord these things. Then the master of the house being angry said to his servant, Go out quickly into the streets and lanes of the city, and bring in hither the poor, and the maimed, and the halt, and the blind. And the servant said, Lord, it is done as thou hast commanded, and yet there is room. And the lord said unto the servant, Go out into the highways and hedges, and compel them to come in, that my house may be filled. For I say unto you, That none of those men which were bidden shall taste of my supper.
Jesus was illustrating the importance of responding to the gospel. These made light of the invitation. This is the age of the no sacrifice sacrifice. People think that they can have it all. They think they can take both sides and not have to make a choice. God isnt impressed with a sacrifice that doesnt cost us anything. Life hands us choices that have consequences. Some of the choices have serious consequences, and some involve sacrifice. The sacrifices shouldnt be for the sake of the minister, they should be due to a personal choice and a love for God. Choosing God requires something of us. Its not always the easiest choice, but it is by far the best choice. What are you choosing instead of God? We could make excuses for not choosing God. God can remove any obstacles if were willing. Sacrifice involves making choices. It requires us to choose the way that accomplishes Gods work at the expense of a personal luxury.
2 Samuel 24:18-25
And Gad came that day to David, and said unto him, Go up, rear an altar unto the Lord in the threshingfloor of Araunah the Jebusite. And David, according to the saying of Gad, went up as the Lord commanded. And Araunah looked, and saw the king and his servants coming on toward him: and Araunah went out, and bowed himself before the king on his face upon the ground. And Araunah said, Wherefore is my lord the king come to his servant? And David said, To buy the threshingfloor of thee, to build an altar unto the Lord, that the plague may be stayed from the people. And Araunah said unto David, Let my lord the king take and offer up what seemeth good unto him: behold, here be oxen for burnt sacrifice, and threshing instruments and other instruments of the oxen for wood. All these things did Araunah, as a king, give unto the king. And Araunah said unto the king, The Lord thy God accept thee. And the king said unto Araunah, Nay; but I will surely buy it of thee at a price: neither will I offer burnt offerings unto the Lord my God of that which doth cost me nothing. So David bought the threshingfloor and the oxen for fifty shekels of silver. And David built there an altar unto the Lord, and offered burnt offerings and peace offerings. So the Lord was intreated for the land, and the plague was stayed from Israel.
This plague was the price for Davids sin. Araunah wanted to give the things for the sacrifice to David. David didnt want a sacrifice that cost him nothing. We shouldnt want a sacrifice that doesnt cost us anything, either. We cant sacrifice form someone else (give something as though it was from them). We have to make choices and bear the difficulty that comes with it. When you choose no sacrifice there are blessings that you miss out on. You miss out on a lot by choosing the easy way out.
When we deny ourselves and choose God, our lives will have an impact on others. Those who live right and stand by it, even when it requires sacrifice are the ones who are remembered and respected. You cant escape choices. Life requires it of everyone. You need to deny self and follow God. This is where the happy life is found. Be different. Be faithful to God and what is right. Others will respect you for it. A sacrifice has to cost something if it would have meaning and value. A little sacrifice isnt too much to ask, and it has a big impact. Count the cost. It will be worth it.
And it came to pass, that, as they went in the way, a certain man said unto him, Lord, I will follow thee whithersoever thou goest. And Jesus said unto him, Foxes have holes, and birds of the air have nests; but the Son of man hath not where to lay his head. And he said unto another, Follow me. But he said, Lord, suffer me first to go and bury my father. Jesus said unto him, Let the dead bury their dead: but go thou and preach the kingdom of God. And another also said, Lord, I will follow thee; but let me first go bid them farewell, which are at home at my house. And Jesus said unto him, No man having put his hand to the plough, and looking back, is fit for the kingdom of God.
Jesus was dealing with the issues of following him. Some thought he was headed for a palace. He let them know that he wasnt headed there. Jesus wasnt complaining about how he lived. He wanted them to know that it wasnt going to be always easy street. Weve been richly blessed. Jesus wanted them to know that there was some sacrifice involved in serving God. You cant serve God when its convenient. God doesnt work on our terms, but on his. What are you hoping for by waiting? The things you go after become obstacles to coming back. Settle it to live for God WHATEVER the cost. It will cost something, but its worth the price. Christ didnt consider it too much, and neither should we.
