1 Peter 3:1-5
Likewise, ye wives, be in subjection to your own husbands; that, if any obey not the word, they also may without the word be won by the conversation of the wives; While they behold your chaste conversation coupled with fear. Whose adorning let it not be that outward adorning of plaiting the hair, and of wearing of gold, or of putting on of apparel, But let it be the hidden man of the heart, in that which is not corruptible, even the ornament of a meek and quiet spirit, which is in the sight of God of great price. For after this manner in the old time the holy women also, who trusted in God, adorned themselves, being in subjection unto their own husbands:
Whose adorning let it not be that outward adorning of plaiting the hair, and of wearing of gold, or of putting on of apparel Our outward appearance DOES matter. It matters to God how we look and how we dress. The conscientious child of God wont be careless about his or her appearance. This scripture doesnt say to be UNADORNED. It says not to be adorned in ways that draw attention to self. Be adorned in ways that draw attention to God. Adorn yourself with the ornament of a meek and quiet spirit. This is how holy people are adorned. Be adorned with the right things. Adorn the hidden man, the soul and the spirit. The adornment isnt to be hidden. People will be able to see it. Theyll see a humble, chaste, and reverent life. People will be won by it.
Our inward adornment affects the type of outward adornment we have. It will be pure, modest, and humble. How is your inward man clothed?
But ye have not so learned Christ; If so be that ye have learned him, and have been taught by him, as the truth is in Jesus: That ye put off concerning the former conversation the old man, which is corrupt according to the deceitful lusts; And be renewed in the spirit of your mind; And that ye put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness.
Be renewed in your spirit. Being renewed requires putting off some things and putting on others. Weve been clothed with the likeness of God.
Lie not one to another, seeing that ye have put off the old man with his deeds: And have put on the new man, which is renewed in knowledge after the image of him that created him:
Put off means to want to have nothing to do with it. This is the place you must reach to be sanctified. Be clothed with the new man the image of God. How do you recognize someone who is clothed this way?
Put on therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, bowels of mercies, kindness, humbleness of mind, meekness, longsuffering; Forbearing one another, and forgiving one another, if any man have a quarrel against any; even as Christ forgave you, so also do ye. And above all these things put on charity, which is the bond of perfectness.
This is the image of God. Someone with these qualities is clothed in Gods image. God cares what the outward man looks like. Theres a need of grace as well as proper dress. Proper dress without the graces of God isnt good enough.
Because thou sayest, I am rich, and increased with goods, and have need of nothing; and knowest not that thou art wretched, and miserable, and poor, and blind, and naked: I counsel thee to buy of me gold tried in the fire, that thou mayest be rich; and white raiment, that thou mayest be clothed, and that the shame of thy nakedness do not appear; and anoint thine eyes with eye-salve, that thou mayest see.
This is to be applied in a spiritual manner. God does not approve of either literal or spiritual nakedness. He wants us to be clothed in both ways. If were lacking in the graces of God, were exposed. Those who have the graces of God can tell those who are lacking. God wants us to be clothed with his graces.
Our shame appears when someone needs us and we refused to help or are indifferent to him or her. Our shame appears when we have a cold heart when someone needs a warm heart. Dont be insensitive to the feelings of others. Be clothed with kindness. Your shame appears when you esteem yourself better than others, seek for recognition, or strive for position. Be clothed with humility. Our nakedness appears when were headstrong. Be clothed with meekness. Uncooperativeness, a demanding attitude, being commanding, controlling, causing contention with others, are other ways that your shame appears. Be clothed with the Spirit of God.
1 Peter 3:3-4
Whose adorning let it not be that outward adorning of plaiting the hair, and of wearing of gold, or of putting on of apparel, But let it be the hidden man of the heart, in that which is not corruptible, even the ornament of a meek and quiet spirit, which is in the sight of God of great price.
Are you adorned with God and his Spirit? What have you put on? If you put off without putting on, youre naked. Put on the graces of God.
