One God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in you all.
This speaks of God and our relationship to him. We understand God above us and in us, but do we understand him through us. Gods mission is to work through us as people. Christ came, and his work continues through us. He wants to touch others through us. He wants to spread throughout our whole lives. He can be visible on the outside, not just on the inside.
1 Corinthians 11:1-16
Be ye followers of me, even as I also am of Christ. Now I praise you, brethren, that ye remember me in all things, and keep the ordinances, as I delivered them to you. But I would have you know, that the head of every man is Christ; and the head of the woman is the man; and the head of Christ is God. every man praying or prophesying, having his head covered, dishonoureth his head. But every woman that prayeth or prophesieth with her head uncovered dishonoureth her head: for that is even all one as if she were shaven. For if the woman be not covered, let her also be shorn: but if it be a shame for a woman to be shorn or shaven, let her be covered. For a man indeed ought not to cover his head, forasmuch as he is the image and glory of God: but the woman is the glory of the man. For the man is not of the woman; but the woman of the man. Neither was the man created for the woman; but the woman for the man. For this cause ought the woman to have power on her head because of the angels. Nevertheless neither is the man without the woman, neither the woman without the man, in the Lord. For as the woman is of the man, even so is the man also by the woman; but all things of God. Judge in yourselves: is it comely that a woman pray unto God uncovered? Doth not even nature itself teach you, that, if a man have long hair, it is a shame unto him? But if a woman have long hair, it is a glory to her: for her hair is given her for a covering. But if any man seem to be contentious, we have no such custom, neither the churches of God.
This is a familiar passage of scripture. Most read it and focus on the hair issue. Why does it matter what I do with my hair? Hair, by itself, isnt that big of a deal. This wasnt an issue until the 1960s. In the 60s, it became the thing for a guy to have shaggy hair. People said, Oh, God sees whats on the inside, the outside doesnt matter. How we look matters because it conveys something about us. A good barber helps a man look good when he cuts the mans hair. Its not just about getting your hair chopped. It shows your internal view on things. You convey something by your appearance. The hippies were rebelling against the establishment and were as dirty and unkempt as possible to make that statement. There was a rebellious attitude it wasnt just hair. The attitude is what we need to be concerned about. If we would have God THROUGH us, we should be concerned about our appearance. We want to be presentable. We want a Christ-like appearance. We want the world to see God through us. A womans long hair draws peoples attention. It conveys something to people. The reason that hair matters is that our external appearance conveys a message to others. By our lives, even by our outward appearance, we make a statement.
Employers have something in mind when they tell you to look professional. They have a business image that they want to get across. Clothes dont make the man, but they definitely make a statement about the man. Hair influences what people see through my life, and this is why it matters. It shows some things about your life and your attitudes.
1 Timothy 2:8-10
I will therefore that men pray every where, lifting up holy hands, without wrath and doubting. In like manner also, that women adorn themselves in modest apparel, with shamefacedness and sobriety; not with broided hair, or gold, or pearls, or costly array. But (which becometh women professing godliness) with good works.
Why does it matter what I wear? This applies to both men and women. It matters because it shows something about us. A man is to be adorned in a way that is neither wrathful nor doubtful. Style and fashion shouldnt determine our way. How we dress conveys something. Dressing sloppily makes people think youre sloppy. Stop and think about what youre presenting by the way you dress. The macho image is an image of wrath. A godly man doesnt wear fighting clothes. Fighting clothes project an attitude of wrath and hate. We want to present an image of kindness and love. What we wear conveys something. We ALL need modest apparel not just the women. Guys dont need to wear muscle shirts or tight fitting clothing. Everyone needs clothes that cover, AND that convey a right attitude. Modest apparel conveys shamefacedness and sobriety. Sobriety is an attitude that shows you have a deeper and a more serious side. You want people to know that youre submitted to God. Dont wear clothes with the idea of drawing attention to self.
The saints tend to dress with plainness and simplicity. In society, people use hairstyles and clothing to try to set themselves apart from and above all others. This type of things conveys attitudes that arent befitting of saints. Put on something that will convey the message of Christ. Put on good works.
What we wear to church should convey a respectful and worshipful attitude. Think about what you wear and where you wear it. This is why what we wear is important. Wear what puts the graces of God on display.
It is the spirit that quickeneth; the flesh profiteth nothing; the words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life.
Why does it matter what I say? Theres a spirit conveyed through our words. What we say DOES matter. Be careful what you say not just so far as topic goes, but also in the words that you use. There are a lot of slangy words out there that we dont want to use. This is because they convey bad things to others. You words paint a picture of you. There are some words that just arent Christ-like. Be careful of by-words. By-words are words used in place of other words. We dont want to convey a wrong attitude. By-words convey a crude and vulgar attitude and way of life. We want to convey wholesome, beneficial and uplifting things by our words. We want our words to lift up Christ. Words stir up emotions in people. They cause people to do things. We want our words to show others Christ in us. Slang words and curse words convey bad attitudes also. We dont want this attitude to be manifested in us. People need to see God through us.
We want the presence of God to come through loud and clear, even in the external things of our lives. All that we say or do conveys something about us to others. The world needs to see a difference in us. This doesnt mean weird or strange. They need to see the difference that God makes in our lives, so that they can see what God offers to them. Our spirit and our attitudes influence our external choices.
Wherefore, my beloved, as ye have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling. For it is God which worketh in you both to will and to do of his good pleasure.
God wants to work THROUGH you. This requires obedience, a right spirit within, and a good attitude towards the things of God. We want to be good pictures of what Christianity produces in a life. Be a Christian both inside and out. Let God shine through you to a world that needs a Savior.
