Seeing then that we have a great high priest, that is passed into the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our profession. For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin. Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.
Let us come boldly How is it possible for us to come boldly before God? How can man be bold before God? It depends on the definition of bold. This doesnt mean, Brazen, proud, or self-assured. Most people arent ready to go charging up to the great and high God. If they are, they dont comprehend God.
Exodus 33:17-23; 34:4-8
And the Lord said unto Moses, I will do this thing also that thou hast spoken: for thou hast found grace in my sight, and I know thee by name. And he said, I beseech thee, shew me thy glory. And he said, I will make all my goodness pass before thee, and I will proclaim the name of the Lord before thee; and will be gracious to whom I will be gracious, and will shew mercy on whom I will show mercy. And he said, Thou canst not see my face: for there shall no man see me, and live. And the Lord said, Behold, there is a place by me, and thou shalt stand upon a rock: And it shall come to pass, while my glory passeth by, that I will put thee in a clift of the rock, and will cover thee with my hand while I pass by: And I will take away mine hand, and thou shalt see my back parts: but my face shall not be seen.
And he hewed two tables of stone like unto the first; and Moses rose up early in the morning, and went up unto mount Sinai, as the Lord had commanded him, and took in his hand the two tables of stone. And the Lord descended in the cloud, and stood with him there, and proclaimed the name of the Lord. And the Lord passed by before him, and proclaimed, The Lord, The Lord God, merciful and gracious, longsuffering, and abundant in goodness and truth. Keeping mercy for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin, and that will be no means clear the guilty; visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children, and upon the childrens children, unto the third and to the fourth generation. And Moses made haste, and bowed his head toward the earth, and worshipped.
Moses requested to see God. He didnt know what he asked. God showed him a portion and Moses was overwhelmed. This is an awesome picture of God. He can grant or refuse mercy, whichever he wills. God has told us that he wills to grant mercy. You are where you are (if youre saved) because he willed it. Sometimes we take his grace and mercy for granted. Given this picture, what is the source of our boldness to come before God? This boldness isnt presumptuous, demanding, or prideful. You cant DEMAND something from God! Who do you think you are!?! Rather, it is a God-inspired assurance and confidence. This isnt SELF-confidence or SELF-assurance. Its confidence and assurance that has God as its source. How do we get this confidence? What is its source?
Hebrews 4:14, 16
Seeing then that we have a great high priest, that is passed into the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our profession. Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.
Seeing then that we have a great high priest let us therefore come boldly Our confidence is in what Christ came and did. He is the source of our confidence and boldness. He knows our infirmities. He is how we can approach to and receive from God. What you believe about God will affect your confidence in him.
And another came, saying, Lord, behold, here is thy pound, which I have kept laid up in a napkin: For I feared thee, because thou art an austere man: thou takest up that thou layedst not down, and reapest that thou didst not sow. And he saith unto him, Out of thine own mouth will I judge thee, thou wicked servant. Thou knewest that I was an austere man, taking up that I laid not down, and reaping that I did not sow:
Is this how you see God? God is not a rough, severe man. Those that view God as an austere man will fear him. God is merciful. Hes touched by what we feel. What do you believe Christ is like? Those who view him as austere wont be able to approach with confidence and assurance. Our confidence is based on who he is and what hes like. Christ is touched by how the infirmities affect our spirit and our emotions. He knows the feelings that the infirmities bring, and is touched by them. He knows, because hes been there. He understands the feelings. Seeing Christ this way inspires our confidence.
According to the eternal purpose which he purposed in Christ Jesus our Lord: In whom we have boldness and access with confidence by the faith of him.
This speaks of boldness, access, and confidence. These come by faith in Christ. What he did for us inspires confidence to come before him. So many things are done by the faith of him Because of Christ and all that he has done, we can come before God confident and sure that help is there.
Seeing then that we have a great high priest, that is passed into the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our profession.
Do you see that you have this great high priest? If you do, come boldly to God and obtain the grace and mercy that you need.
