Faith Comes By...

1 Corinthians 2:1-5

And I, brethren, when I came to you, came not with excellency of speech or of wisdom, declaring unto you the testimony of God. For I determined not to know any thing among you, save Jesus Christ, and him crucified. And I was with you in weakness, and in fear, and in much trembling. And my speech and my preaching was not with enticing words of mans wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power: That your faith should not stand in the wisdom of men, but in the power of God.

Paul was reminding them of some things that were past. He was reminding them of how things were when they found God. He had approached things as he did because he wanted them to have faith in God and Gods power. Our faith isnt built on great intellect, but on God and what he can do.

And I was with you in weakness, and in fear, and in much trembling Paul wasnt there speaking of himself and building himself up. Some ministers would do well to take this to heart. Ministers face battles and struggles, too. If your faith is in the minister, it is misplaced. We need the power of God at work in us if we would reach heaven. Paul wanted their faith to be in the power of God, not in people.

We want our confidence to be in God, not in our own goodness. The faith we put in God is what is important.

Romans 10:6-17

But the righteousness which is of faith speaketh on this wise, Say not in thine heart, Who shall ascend into heaven? (that is, to bring Christ down from above:) Or, who shall descend into the deep? (that is, to bring up Christ again from the dead.) But what saith it? The word is nigh thee, even in thy mouth, and in thy heart: that is, the word of faith, which we preach; That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine hear that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. For the scripture saith, Whosoever believeth on him shall not be ashamed. For there is no difference between the Jew and the Greek; for the same Lord over all is rich unto all that call upon him. For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved. How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed? and how shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard? and how shall they hear without a preacher? And how shall they preach, except they be sent? As it is written, How beautiful are the feet of them that preach the gospel of peace, and bring glad tidings of good things! But they have not all obeyed the gospel. For Esaias saith, Lord, who hath believed our report? So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.

Faith comes by hearing what God has to say. We believe what God says he will do. Christ came to us; we dont have to have someone drag him to us. Pray believing God, not to try to move him. Who will believe God in what he said and in what he can do? You have to hear the promise before you can claim it. When youve heard, take it and believe it. Things have been recorded so that we can hear and believe.

1 Corinthians 12:8-11

For to one is given by the Spirit the word of wisdom; to another the word of knowledge by the same Spirit; To another faith by the same Spirit; to another the gifts of healing by the same Spirit; To another the working of miracles; to another prophecy; to another discerning of spirits; to another divers kinds of tongues; to another the interpretation of tongues; But all these worketh that one and the selfsame Spirit, dividing to every man severally as he will.

Faith comes by the Spirit as well as by hearing. It is the Spirit that opens the word and makes it personal to you. The Spirit needs to speak the word to us to make it a living thing to us. The Spirit of God has given what we enjoy as a church to us. God provides many things to us by his power and by his Spirit.

1 John 3:20-23

For if our heart condemn us, God is greater than our heart, and knoweth all things. Beloved, if our heart condemn us not, then have we confidence toward God. And whatsoever we ask, we receive of him, because we keep his commandments, and do those things that are pleasing in his sight. And this is his commandment, That we should believe on the name of his Son Jesus Christ, and love one another, as he gave us commandment.

If there is sin in your life, its awful hard to pray. It makes it hard to come boldly to the throne of grace. We dont want something in us that would hinder us from claiming the promise. God is still able, but sin hinders mans confidence towards God. Move any hindrance out of the way. Its easy to claim a promise when theres nothing between. Keep the confidence that you can freely come to God.

God commanded that we would believe Jesus. Jesus commanded us to love one another. If we would obey this, its easy to claim the promises. Sinners have trouble coming with confidence to God.

Hebrews 4:1-2, 15-16

Let us therefore fear, lest, a promise being left us of entering into his rest, any of you should seem to come short of it. For unto us was the gospel preached, as well as unto them: but the word preached did not profit them, not being mixed with faith in them that heard it.

For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin. Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.

A lot of those that came out of Egypt died in the wilderness because they didnt believe what God could do. If they had had faith, God would have given the promised land to them. They missed out because they wouldnt have faith.

We want to put our faith in God to solve whatever problems may come. If we dont put our faith in Gods promise, we wont receive. God is touched by our needs. Hes able to meet our needs and hes very approachable. His promise is for all no matter what time they live in. His promises are for now. When we get to eternity, we will see him face to face. God can work out whatever we need when we put our faith in him.
