2 Peter 1:5-7
And beside this, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue; and to virtue knowledge; And to knowledge temperance; and to temperance patience; and to patience godliness; And to godliness brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness charity.s others.
This shows the progression of the life of faith. The ultimate is charity. Charity has the thought of love in it. The love of God will also extend from us to those about us. Charity has to do with how we interact with others. This is the ultimate living out of the gospel.
1 Corinthians 8:1-3
Now as touching things offered unto idols, we know that we all have knowledge. Knowledge puffeth up, but charity edifieth. And if any man think that he knoweth any thing, he knoweth nothing yet as he ought to know. But if any man love God, the same is known of him
Paul contrasts knowledge and charity. Knowledge puffs up, but charity builds up. Love can encourage and strengthen another. People tend to try to help others by offering knowledge. We want to offer what will help others to grow and prosper spiritually. The more you think you know, the less you really know. The more confident you are that you have it all figured out, the more careful you need to be. Knowledge can be taken away. Be careful not to get a big head when it comes to knowledge. Be careful what you say. Even though you know some, you dont really know it all.
The love of God flowing out through us is what gets the message of God across. Someone who wants to just argue the scripture has knowledge but lacks charity. If any man knows God, God knows him and he knows God. This is one who has a love that edifies.
Let us not therefore judge one another any more: but judge this rather, that no man put a stumblingblock or an occasion to fall in his brother's way. I know, and am persuaded by the Lord Jesus, that there is nothing unclean of itself: but to him that esteemeth any thing to be unclean, to him it is unclean. But if thy brother be grieved with thy meat, now walkest thou not charitably. Destroy not him with thy meat, for whom Christ died.
We could spend our time forming opinions about each other. However, our concern should be that were not the stumblingblock for others. We dont want to be the cause of someone getting discouraged or falling. Most people are discouraged because of other peoples actions. Knowledge isnt the issue. Charity is. Knowledge might allow us to do some things, but charity considers the effect that action will have on others. If you would manifest charity, you need to get beyond some things. Love will restrain you and bring you in line. A charitable walk is a walk that carefully considers the effect of every act.
For this cause I bow my knees unto the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, Of whom the whole family in heaven and earth is named, That he would grant you, according to the riches of his glory, to be strengthened with might by his Spirit in the inner man; That Christ may dwell in your hearts by faith; that ye, being rooted and grounded in love, May be able to comprehend with all saints what is the breadth, and length, and depth, and height; And to know the love of Christ, which passeth knowledge, that ye might be filled with all the fulness of God.
Paul prayed for them that they would have internal strength. This strength comes from Christ dwelling within. We need to be able to understand the dimensions of love. Love has great dimensions. We may not comprehend as much as we think we do. Gods love to us is immeasurable, and our love to others can be immeasurable. To know the love of Christ, which passeth knowledge Talking about it and experiencing it are two different things. Without the love of God within we cant come together like we should. This love helps our relationships with others. Charity really tells the world that God is in us.
The extent of charity in us is the extent of our soul burden. Your interest in souls is the extent of your love to them. Do we care about those that are untoward and out of the way? The goal isnt to bring more people in, but the goal is that more people would find God. The love of God has to show forth from you in order to draw people to God. When people receive charity, it makes them want it.
And above all these things put on charity, which is the bond of perfectness.
Superglue glues things together and they dont come apart. Charity is the superglue. Youll tear something up before youll pull it apart. Differences will come because we dont all have the same level of knowledge. Charity is grieved by differences. Conflicts hurt it, and it sends people to their knees. Its the superglue that will hold people together and help them to work out differences. Without the love of God, you wont have true unity. The love of God brings genuine concern and a desire to build up. It will hold us together when things go wrong. Love will send us after the lost ones to rescue them. It wants to restore them. We can have charity for each one. The love of God is what will make us a real people for God.
1 Corinthians 13:8, 13
Charity never faileth: but whether there be prophecies, they shall fail; whether there be tongues, they shall cease; whether there be knowledge, it shall vanish away.
And now abideth faith, hope, charity, these three; but the greatest of these is charity.
Charity never fails. A lot of other things will fail, but the love of God wont. We need to be a people filled with charity. Charity isnt the wrong choice, even if we get hurt. Ask God to strengthen you until charity just flows out. Put emphasis on charity. Without charity, everything you do will be a failure. The gifts have value when you have the love of God. Charity doesnt fail. Get the other things, but dont quit until you get charity. God wants a people filled with charity.
