Genesis 2:15-17

And the LORD God took the man, and put him into the garden of Eden to dress it and to keep it. And the LORD God commanded the man, saying, Of every tree of the garden thou mayest freely eat: But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it: for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die.

What does it mean to surely die? God put a choice before man. The tree became a source of temptation. When and how did they die? What was the result of their knowing, but doing it anyway?

Romans 7:15-24

For that which I do I allow not: for what I would, that do I not; but what I hate, that do I. If then I do that which I would not, I consent unto the law that it is good. Now then it is no more I that do it, but sin that dwelleth in me. For I know that in me (that is, in my flesh,) dwelleth no good thing: for to will is present with me; but how to perform that which is good I find not. For the good that I would I do not: but the evil which I would not, that I do. Now if I do that I would not, it is no more I that do it, but sin that dwelleth in me. I find then a law, that, when I would do good, evil is present with me. For I delight in the law of God after the inward man: But I see another law in my members, warring against the law of my mind, and bringing me into captivity to the law of sin which is in my members. O wretched man that I am! who shall deliver me from the body of this death?

Paul describes the death. Sometimes people read this and see life, but this describes the death that God spoke to Adam when he said they would surely die. Paul describes knowledge of good and a realization of evil. This is a dead condition. Adam and Eve became aware very quickly that they hadnt done right, and that something was between God and them that wasnt there before.

This death is still working today. This death is something between you and God. God knew what death was awaiting them. It wasnt physical death, but a death that happened when they took part of what they shouldnt have.

Genesis 3:6-8

And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to make one wise, she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat, and gave also unto her husband with her; and he did eat. And the eyes of them both were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together, and made themselves aprons. And they heard the voice of the LORD God walking in the garden in the cool of the day: and Adam and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the LORD God amongst the trees of the garden.

They partook of the fruit, and by the cool of the day they were hiding from God. The death had already taken place when the act was committed. Gods judgment did fall. Something came between them and eternal life, Gods justice.

Every soul experiences this death. Knowledge comes that there is right, and Im wrong. It comes between you and God. You cant come into Gods presence and enjoy it. Sinners dont want to go to a place that makes them consider God. This is the death that sin brings.

Psalm 40:11-12

Withhold not thou thy tender mercies from me, O LORD: let thy lovingkindness and thy truth continually preserve me. For innumerable evils have compassed me about: mine iniquities have taken hold upon me, so that I am not able to look up; they are more than the hairs of mine head: therefore my heart faileth me.

This pictures the death of sin. The iniquities block out God; they keep you from looking up to him. Theres something between. Some have a concept of an angry God. This is because of the death. This is a really sad condition. Its knowing the right and being wrong. It doesnt create confidence in God answering you. God is too holy to look on iniquity. He wants people who are right.

Romans 5:12-14

Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned: (For until the law sin was in the world: but sin is not imputed when there is no law. Nevertheless death reigned from Adam to Moses, even over them that had not sinned after the similitude of Adam's transgression, who is the figure of him that was to come.

Death came by Adams sin in the garden. Sin wasnt dealt with until the law came. Religion isnt what makes people bad. Death reigns even where religion isnt. Humanity was depraved even when the law wasnt there. Try to find any race of humanity that doesnt worship something. They knew that there was a right, that they were wrong, and that something was needed to fix it. Death reigns because when man is born, hes depraved. It doesnt take long for the awareness to come that there is a God that is right, and that Im wrong. Eternal punishment exists for those who stay separated from God during life.

Hebrews 10:1-4

For the law having a shadow of good things to come, and not the very image of the things, can never with those sacrifices which they offered year by year continually make the comers thereunto perfect. For then would they not have ceased to be offered? because that the worshippers once purged should have had no more conscience of sins. But in those sacrifices there is a remembrance again made of sins every year. For it is not possible that the blood of bulls and of goats should take away sins.

The law showed what was coming. It wasnt what was coming. The Day of Atonement brought back the knowledge that God is right and Im wrong. The sacrifices didnt take away the death. They came back year after year. It held out the hope and promise of being made right with God, but it didnt fix the problem. If it had fixed the problem, the conscience would be clear. Death (Sin) has a conscience that wont let you forget. Sacrifices wont purge the conscience and make it clean.

This pointed to something that was good, but that didnt get the job done. The Day of Atonement simply rolled the sin forward another year. We need a better answer than this. How do we get away from this death?

1 Timothy 4:1-2

Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils; Speaking lies in hypocrisy; having their conscience seared with a hot iron;

You could deal with this by killing your conscience. If it feels good, do it. This will sear your conscience. The idea that God through Christ ignores your condition will sear your conscience. The person going this route is doomed unless something extraordinary happens. This death will work to a permanent death. This route wont solve the problem in reality. This is a seducing spirit. Thinking that God will overlook it wont solve the problem. This isnt the way to take care of the problem. Harding your conscience isnt the way to go.

Ephesians 2:1-7

And you hath he quickened, who were dead in trespasses and sins; Wherein in time past ye walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience: Among whom also we all had our conversation in times past in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind; and were by nature the children of wrath, even as others. But God, who is rich in mercy, for his great love wherewith he loved us, Even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ, (by grace ye are saved;) And hath raised us up together, and made us sit together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus: That in the ages to come he might shew the exceeding riches of his grace in his kindness toward us through Christ Jesus.

God makes a change. You, who were dead, who lived like the world, and who knew there was right, but were doing wrong, were loved by God even while you were in this condition. God died so that justice wouldnt have to come upon you. He made a way for your sins to be forgiven and for your life to change. You can be right with God. You can sit in heavenly places with God. Its a recovery of what man had in the garden. Its a new life in Christ Jesus. You can have the good things. Repenting each night is living in the shadow. You can have the good things. He can keep you and you can walk with him. The most wonderful thing you can know is that Im right with God. You can be brought back and partake of the tree of life through Jesus. By the grace of God, you can live a new life.
