The Feast of Pentecost (cont'd)Bro. David Chancellor
6/22/2003 6:00 PM
Pentecost was a shorter (one-day) feast. It was always in the third month of their year. It was also an observance of the giving of the law.
In the third month, when the children of Israel were gone forth out of the land of Egypt, the same day came they into the wilderness of Sinai. For they were departed from Rephidim, and were come to the desert of Sinai, and had pitched in the wilderness; and there Israel camped before the mount. And Moses went up unto God, and the LORD called unto him out of the mountain, saying, Thus shalt thou say to the house of Jacob, and tell the children of Israel; Ye have seen what I did unto the Egyptians, and how I bare you on eagles' wings, and brought you unto myself. Now therefore, if ye will obey my voice indeed, and keep my covenant, then ye shall be a peculiar treasure unto me above all people: for all the earth is mine: And ye shall be unto me a kingdom of priests, and an holy nation. These are the words which thou shalt speak unto the children of Israel. And Moses came and called for the elders of the people, and laid before their faces all these words which the LORD commanded him. And all the people answered together, and said, All that the LORD hath spoken we will do. And Moses returned the words of the people unto the LORD. And the LORD said unto Moses, Lo, I come unto thee in a thick cloud, that the people may hear when I speak with thee, and believe thee for ever. And Moses told the words of the people unto the LORD. And the LORD said unto Moses, Go unto the people, and sanctify them to day and to morrow, and let them wash their clothes, And be ready against the third day: for the third day the LORD will come down in the sight of all the people upon mount Sinai. And thou shalt set bounds unto the people round about, saying, Take heed to yourselves, that ye go not up into the mount, or touch the border of it: whosoever toucheth the mount shall be surely put to death: There shall not an hand touch it, but he shall surely be stoned, or shot through; whether it be beast or man, it shall not live: when the trumpet soundeth long, they shall come up to the mount. And Moses went down from the mount unto the people, and sanctified the people; and they washed their clothes. And he said unto the people, Be ready against the third day: come not at your wives. And it came to pass on the third day in the morning, that there were thunders and lightnings, and a thick cloud upon the mount, and the voice of the trumpet exceeding loud; so that all the people that was in the camp trembled. And Moses brought forth the people out of the camp to meet with God; and they stood at the nether part of the mount. And mount Sinai was altogether on a smoke, because the LORD descended upon it in fire: and the smoke thereof ascended as the smoke of a furnace, and the whole mount quaked greatly. And when the voice of the trumpet sounded long, and waxed louder and louder, Moses spake, and God answered him by a voice.
This pictures the giving of the law. God spoke directly to the people. He would still speak directly to mankind today. The people would have heard God speak it, and also seen it written in stone. God would show us the way to walk. He can speak to us. Now therefore, if ye will obey my voice indeed, and keep my covenant, then ye shall be a peculiar treasure unto me above all people: for all the earth is mine God was going to tell them his will, and he expected them to do it. We dont want to just know the way, but we also want the strength to walk in that way. Because of what God has done through Christ, we can be a peculiar people unto God. Speaking through someone (such as translation) is hard. Something gets lost in the process. What they saw would have been a fearful thing. God had spoken to them in a voice. He wanted to speak to them directly, but they were scared and wanted him to speak to them indirectly (through Moses).
And all the people saw the thunderings, and the lightnings, and the noise of the trumpet, and the mountain smoking: and when the people saw it, they removed, and stood afar off. And they said unto Moses, Speak thou with us, and we will hear: but let not God speak with us, lest we die. And Moses said unto the people, Fear not: for God is come to prove you, and that his fear may be before your faces, that ye sin not. And the people stood afar off, and Moses drew near unto the thick darkness where God was.
This was the peoples reaction. They got scared. They wanted to go through Moses. God wanted them to have an awe and respect of him. He wanted them to hear him speak. God doesnt want a go-between. He wants to speak to his people directly. The people were rejecting what God was speaking to them. God wants us to listen when he speaks. He wants us to know him personally and have his law written in our hearts. Be where God would have you to be and do what he would have you to do.
But this man, after he had offered one sacrifice for sins for ever, sat down on the right hand of God; From henceforth expecting till his enemies be made his footstool. For by one offering he hath perfected for ever them that are sanctified. Whereof the Holy Ghost also is a witness to us: for after that he had said before, This is the covenant that I will make with them after those days, saith the Lord, I will put my laws into their hearts, and in their minds will I write them; And their sins and iniquities will I remember no more. Now where remission of these is, there is no more offering for sin. Having therefore, brethren, boldness to enter into the holiest by the blood of Jesus, By a new and living way, which he hath consecrated for us, through the veil, that is to say, his flesh; And having an high priest over the house of God; Let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience, and our bodies washed with pure water. Let us hold fast the profession of our faith without wavering; (for he is faithful that promised;) And let us consider one another to provoke unto love and to good works: Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another: and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching.
Christ has made people whole and complete. The Holy Ghost is the witness of the work of God. It writes the law of God in our hearts and our minds. At Pentecost, the law was written in their hearts by the Holy Ghost. The Holy Ghost helps us to know and do what God would have us to do. Theres a problem when the law is external to a people who claim to be the people of God. The people at Mt. Sinai had a barrier between them and God. They couldnt enter into the holiest of holies. Because of the blood of Christ, we can enter in. There has been a way made to enter in. The fearfulness is gone because our sins have been washed away. When God has entered in, love and good works will be produced.
Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ: By whom also we have access by faith into this grace wherein we stand, and rejoice in hope of the glory of God. And not only so, but we glory in tribulations also: knowing that tribulation worketh patience; And patience, experience; and experience, hope: And hope maketh not ashamed; because the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost which is given unto us.
We have access to God by faith and his grace. This life is lived by the grace of God. We can go through troubles by the grace of God. Observe how God wrote his law in our hearts. Its not Thou shalt or Thou shalt not. Its written by the love of God being there. When true love for mankind is there, theres no need for a law. True love wont take advantage of another. When true love is there, you can trust that one with anything. The law of Moses was given to overcome the lack of love in the heart. It takes the love of God in the heart to make right application of the word of God. This causes the law to work from the inside out. It makes you a person zealous of good works. People need to progress from Passover to Pentecost. Do our lives promote love and good works? A child of God ought not to do random acts of kindness. Their lives should always promote love and good works. It is expedient to go from Passover to Pentecost. Whenever you come and meet the conditions you can experience what they had at Pentecost. Be ready and willing to hear what God would have to say. When youre a child of God, you dont want to be wrong in any way. You want to be as God wants you to be.
