Let your speech be alway with grace, seasoned with salt, that ye may know how ye ought to answer every man.
"Let your speech be alway with grace" Let your speaking be with the presence of God on it. Sometimes we may not know what to say. We need the grace of God to know what to say to be helpful in each situation. Christ had an answer (the right answer) for every situation. It addressed the need that was there. We need the Spirit of God on us to know what to say to be a blessing to others.
Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good to the use of edifying, that it may minister grace unto the hearers.
We need to have a guard on our mouths. We shouldn't want corruption coming out. The solution to ending corruption from the mouth is to clean up the corrupt heart. We want our words to accomplish good and build up. We want grace to inspire the hearts of those that hear.
Most of the talk on the radio doesn't administer grace. It's mostly about strife and debate. You want the communication that can administer grace to come out. "Minister grace" = to give grace. By your words, you can convey something to someone else. We can convey something to others which benefits their souls. Gossip doesn't minister grace. It causes people to question others. We want our talk to have good value in it.
A soft answer turneth away wrath: but grievous words stir up anger. The tongue of the wise useth knowledge aright: but the mouth of fools poureth out foolishness. The eyes of the LORD are in every place, beholding the evil and the good. A wholesome tongue is a tree of life: but perverseness therein is a breach in the spirit. A fool despiseth his father's instruction: but he that regardeth reproof is prudent. In the house of the righteous is much treasure: but in the revenues of the wicked is trouble. The lips of the wise disperse knowledge: but the heart of the foolish doeth not so.
"A soft answer turneth away wrath: but grievous words stir up anger." This isn't answering in such a way as to make people made. Getting people angry isn't profitable. People use "fighting words" to stir up anger. These don't solve anything.
You can take knowledge and use it in a wrong way. Incorrectly applied knowledge can do damage. It gives just enough knowledge to do something that you really don't know anything about. It's good to give knowledge time to settle in. It shouldn't come out quite so easily. The mouth of the fool opens and spews. Some things should be stopped as soon as they come to mind.
God knows about everything. Because he knows about it, we don't need to speak about the evil. "A wholesome tongue is a tree of life" The tree of life restores you and makes you able to go again. The wholesome tongue helps the discouraged one to overcome the discouragement. We want our words to be a help. We want to give out things that are good and helpful. If there's much treasure, you can disperse good. We don't want to disperse trouble. There's enough trouble in the world without our adding to it.
It is the spirit that quickeneth; the flesh profiteth nothing: the words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life.
The Spirit that motivates the words is what makes it effective. Christ's words were spirit and life. If we would promote life in others, we need to give Christ's words to others. When we give Christ's words to others, we give them something of value. Ancestry doesn't build your spirit. Our own intellectual capabilities profit nothing. We need that which comes from God to build us up. Get that which goes beyond education; get that which comes from God.
You need the words of God. They will relieve anxiety in a way that mans ideas can't. The words that God speaks are spirit and life. God to God for the answers. If you want something that will meet the need of your soul, get that which came through Christ. We can have the Spirit of God in us, and offer others the help that is needed. We want to be a blessing and a benefit to others.
Heaviness in the heart of man maketh it stoop: but a good word maketh it glad.
Heaviness burdens down the heart of man. The anxieties and cares can work on us, but a good word can cheer us up. This doesn't mean to go straighten them out. It means to give a good word of encouragement. Help to lift the load that others are carrying. God wants his army to be strong, enthused and going forth to conquer. The reminder that God loves us, cares for us, and is there for us can give us a lift.
2 Timothy 1:12-18
For the which cause I also suffer these things: nevertheless I am not ashamed: for I know whom I have believed, and am persuaded that he is able to keep that which I have committed unto him against that day. Hold fast the form of sound words, which thou hast heard of me, in faith and love which is in Christ Jesus. That good thing which was committed unto thee keep by the Holy Ghost which dwelleth in us. This thou knowest, that all they which are in Asia be turned away from me; of whom are Phygellus and Hermogenes. The Lord give mercy unto the house of Onesiphorus; for he oft refreshed me, and was not ashamed of my chain: But, when he was in Rome, he sought me out very diligently, and found me. The Lord grant unto him that he may find mercy of the Lord in that day: and in how many things he ministered unto me at Ephesus, thou knowest very well.
Paul was suffering some things because he'd been faithful to God. He had confidence that God would keep him. He tells Timothy to hold fast sound words and to keep what was committed to him by the Holy Ghost. Onesiphorus was able to minister to Paul. Paul faced discouragement just like everyone else. This one sought Paul out and made a point of encouraging him. He wasn't ashamed of Paul's chains. Seek out the opportunity to help others. Onesiphorus wanted to help Paul and encourage him. Get past the things that would cause people to pull back. Dont worry about the things that would make ashamed. If our words are sound words, they can refresh others. There is no one, but who can benefit from an encouraging word. Sound words help others and provide a real benefit. People are encouraged or discouraged by what they hear. God wants us to be encouraged and our eyes turned toward him. Be a well of refreshing. Give a word of encouragement.
