2 Peter 1:16-21; 2:1-3
For we have not followed cunningly devised fables, when we made known unto you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but were eyewitnesses of his majesty. For he received from God the Father honour and glory, when there came such a voice to him from the excellent glory, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased. And this voice which came from heaven we heard, when we were with him in the holy mount. We have also a more sure word of prophecy; whereunto ye do well that ye take heed, as unto a light that shineth in a dark place, until the day dawn, and the day star arise in your hearts: Knowing this first, that no prophecy of the scripture is of any private interpretation. For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost. But there were false prophets also among the people, even as there shall be false teachers among you, who privily shall bring in damnable heresies, even denying the Lord that bought them, and bring upon themselves swift destruction. And may shall follow their pernicious ways; by reason of whom the way of truth shall be evil spoken of. And through covetousness shall they with feigned words make merchandise of you: whose judgment now of a long time lingereth not, and their damnation slumbereth not.
It is very important that we know Jesus Christ. It's not just a story told to get you to do what is right. A fable is told to convey a moral thought. This is more than a story. Peter saw what God did when Jesus was transfigured on the mount. We have the word of God, the day star that arose in our hearts. It takes the Spirit of God to illuminate our understanding. This is deeper than what goes into our heads.
Peter tells them "there were false prophets, also." He told them there would be false teachers among them, too. It is very important that you know what is true. There is a false. It is important to know the one that is truth, Jesus. God allows the true and false to co-exist. God leaves us here to find the truth and seek out what is right. Realize that there is falsehood out there. You have to know truth for the sake of your own soul. God didn't call every man that says he is a preacher. Find the right foundation to build on. There is just one truth. It is found in Jesus Christ. It's something we have to find. We will have to answer for the way we chose. Others will try to make merchandise of us. We don't want to be someone else's merchandise. Seek God and follow him.
All ye beasts of the field, come to devour, yea, all ye beasts of the forest. His watchmen are blind: they are all ignorant, they are all dumb dogs, they cannot bark; sleeping, lying down, loving to slumber. Yea, they are greedy dogs which can never have enough, and they are shepherds that cannot understand: they all look to their own way, every one for his gain, from his quarter. Come ye, say they, I will fetch wine, and we will fill ourselves with strong drink; and to morrow shall be as this day, and much more abundant.
Isaiah was also telling of false prophets. Elijah met with about 800 false prophets - prophets of Baal. Isaiah calls these false prophets "blind, ignorant, dumb dogs that can't bark, sleeping, greedy, unable to understand, looking to their own way and their own gain." If you would find the false, look at whom they are serving. See whose interest is promoted first and foremost. Those who tell the truth aren't pursuing their own ends and will tell it even if it is inconvenient for them. The "you can't outgive God" message is taking advantage of people. The truth is trying to please God and do right and walk as he would have you to. The false is going its own selfish way.
Even though it led to the cross, Jesus told the truth. He told the truth even when it wasn't popular. Will you choose truth and right or man's ideas (something contrary to God and his word).
2 Corinthians 11:12-15
But what I do, that I will do, that I may cut off occasion from them which desire occasion; that wherein they glory, they may be found even as we. For such are false apostles, deceitful workers, transforming themselves into the apostles of Christ. And no marvel; for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light. Therefore it is no great thing if his ministers also be transformed as ministers of righteousness; whose end shall be according to their works.
Some at Corinth decided that Paul wasn't an apostle. They were undermining and trying to cause problems. Paul called them false apostles. The devil used this approach. He has no problem pretending to be an angel of light bringing a new revelation. "Whose end shall be according to their works." Our end will be according to our works. When the truth comes in, it does something. A man can say great things, but where does he walk when the talk is over. Is the love of God showing in your life? Works is the place to focus your attention. No one else will stand before God to answer for you. If you're not trying to find the next great teacher and pin yourself to him, you'll do better. If we find Christ and follow him by faith, we will find the truth. It's not all right to do wrong. Satan would present justification for wrong doing. If you focus on the word of God and following it, you'll do right.
2 Timothy 3:12-17; 4:1-4
Yea, and all that will live godly in Christ Jesus shall suffer persecution. But evil men and seducers shall wax worse and worse, deceiving, and being deceived. But continue thou in the things which thou hast learned and hast been assured of, knowing of whom thou hast learned them; And that from a child thou hast known the holy scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus. All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: That the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all good works.
I charge thee therefore before God, and the Lord Jesus Christ, who shall judge the quick and the dead at his appearing and his kingdom; Preach the word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all long suffering and doctrine. For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears; And they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables.
The scripture is inspired by God and is true. Seek out the truth. There will at times be a challenge to do what is right. The significant stand is standing for what is right even when it hurts.
The "they" in this passage are "evil men and seducers." God's people aren't the ones that can't endure sound doctrine. The evil men and seducers won't want to hear the truth. If men are content with the wrong, they'll find the wrong and feel good in it. If you would stand before God and hear, "well done," you would want to know if you're in the wrong here and now and make a change.
When the word is preached, we want to get it as close to what God said as we can, with longsuffering and teaching. A true man of God wants you to understand, to see and avoid the pitfalls.
Religion has turned aside to fables that aren't teaching the truth. Sometimes the stories that are told don't convey the truth. Right is still right, and wrong is still wrong. Seek the truth. The truth is more important than a good story. Build your life around Jesus and what God brought to man. We need the truth. Not everyone loves Jesus and what is right. We need to seek out the truth. Know Jesus yourself. He can bring you through and help you discern between truth and error.
Everyone who wants to stand clear before God will push all else aside and seek Christ.
1 Timothy 6:3-6
If any man teach otherwise, and consent not to wholesome words, even the words of our Lord Jesus Christ, and to the doctrine which is according to godliness; He is proud, knowing nothing, but doting about questions and strifes of words, whereof cometh envy, strife, railings, evil surmisings, Perverse disputings of men of corrupt minds, and destitute of the truth, supposing that gain is godliness: from such withdraw thyself. But godliness with contentment is great gain.
If any man doesn't bring the truth, there's no foundation to build on. Living as God would have you to in godliness and holiness is important. If anyone teaches otherwise, he's proud and knows nothing. We look in the word that we might know Christ and what he has to say.
If envy is produced, it's not Christ that produced it. Look at whatever it produces in your life. Godliness is what we're after. Ask what God would do in your life. Seek his guidance and understanding in the truth. The truth will produce a godly life in the individual.
Then if any man shall say unto you, Lo, here is Christ, or there; believe it not. For there shall arise false Christs, and false prophets, and shall shew great signs and wonders; insomuch that, if it were possible, they shall deceive the very elect. Behold, I have told you before.
"Behold, I have told you before." You've been warned. Not everyone who claims to be Christ is. Christ has come and we're not looking for another. Christ came the way he came the first time once. When he comes again, you better be ready for eternity. There may be all kinds of wonders, but you need to find Christ. Mohammed claimed to be Christ. Christ was THE prophet, not Mohammed. There was just one Jesus. We need to find him. We're not looking for a multiplicity of Christs. There was just one. He was the way, the truth, and the life. Get the one that came down from heaven. He makes a change in the soul. There's a change that happens when Christ comes in. Love comes in where hate was. You aren't the same as you were. There's only one that can change the heart and make it pure and whole. Even before Jesus came, false Christs had come and gone. Jesus didn't go away. He lives in the hearts of mankind today; to deliver from sin and make pure and whole.
False Christs and false prophets would come and try to deceive. If it makes allowance for wrong, it's not Christ. We may have to put up with the wrong of others, but don't accept wrong in your heart. Accept godliness and truth.
I marvel that ye are so soon removed from him that called you into the grace of Christ unto another gospel: Which is not another; but there be some that trouble you, and would pervert the gospel of Christ. But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed. As we said before, so say I now again, if any man preach any other gospel unto you than that ye have received, let him be accursed. For do I now persuade men, or God? or do I seek to please men? for if I yet pleased men, I should not be the servant of Christ. But I certify you, brethren, that the gospel which was preached of me is not after man. For I neither received it of man, neither was I taught it, but by the revelation of Jesus Christ.
It's important to us that we find the truth. There is a false, which is why we must find the truth. The truth comes by the Spirit of God working in you. It takes Christ to make the right choices. Things may pull on us, but God can show us what the way is. He is the one who is the truth, and can reveal it to our hearts. Our assurance, hope, foundation and rock is Jesus Christ. We must have him and know him ourselves. We have to have the truth in the person of Jesus Christ.
You don't have to be drifting and pulled in different directions. Take Jesus as the anchor of your soul. We have to have Jesus to open our understanding. If you have Jesus, you can have the truth and be and live right.
