Exodus 16:4-5, 15-20
Then said the LORD unto Moses, Behold, I will rain bread from heaven for you; and the people shall go out and gather a certain rate every day, that I may prove them, whether they will walk in my law, or no. And it shall come to pass, that on the sixth day they shall prepare that which they bring in; and it shall be twice as much as they gather daily.
And when the children of Israel saw it, they said one to another, It is manna: for they wist not what it was. And Moses said unto them, This is the bread which the LORD hath given you to eat. This is the thing which the LORD hath commanded, Gather of it every man according to his eating, an omer for every man, according to the number of your persons; take ye every man for them which are in his tents. And the children of Israel did so, and gathered, some more, some less. And when they did mete it with an omer, he that gathered much had nothing over, and he that gathered little had no lack; they gathered every man according to his eating. And Moses said, Let no man leave of it till the morning. Notwithstanding they hearkened not unto Moses; but some of them left of it until the morning, and it bred worms, and stank: and Moses was wroth with them.
The people were out in the wilderness. They were hungry and complaining. It certainly would be a challenge to feed this many people in the desert. Moses and Aaron talked to God about it. God told them that he would provide daily bread, but he was also using this time to prove them. We need to walk in Gods law. Obedience is a very big thing to God. He gave them manna at a daily rate to see if they would obey him. They were told how much to gather and to not save anything over. When they disobeyed, what they had saved over wasnt any good.
Manna is a type of Gods word. What are you going to do with Gods word? God is interested in our obedience. Religion today emphasizes the love and forgiveness of God, but not obedience. God still cares about whether or not we obey him.
When we read the word of God, were looking for what God would have us to do. Whether or not we did what he wanted us to do is what will matter when we stand before him. As Gods word is opened to your understanding, will you obey him? God wants us to live by what we find in his word. Everything he asks us to do will work. God can help you to do whats right.
1 Samuel 15:22-23
And Samuel said, Hath the LORD as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices, as in obeying the voice of the LORD? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to hearken than the fat of rams. For rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft, and stubbornness is as iniquity and idolatry. Because thou hast rejected the word of the LORD, he hath also rejected thee from being king.
God cares a great deal about obedience. Saul did some things, but he didnt do what he was told. Partial obedience isnt obedience. Saul justified it by saying, Well, we were going to sacrifice. God doesnt delight in sacrifice. He would rather that we obey him. God wants repentance not penance. Repentance recognizes a thing is bad and goes a different way. Penance tries to make up for the bad. Turn from the wrong and walk with God. Its possible by the power of God. He will provide what we need in order to do what he asks us to do.
Praise wont cover disobedience. God isnt pleased with disobedience. Its not good enough to just speak it. You have to live a life of obedience.
Saul had put out a decree against witchcraft. Taking a stand against wrong in others isnt good enough. You have to be obedient. If we refuse to obey, were rejecting the word of God. We dont want to do that. We want God to open his word to us and to help us to live it.
Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven. Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works? And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.
We dont go to heave because weve accomplished so much. We go because of Gods mercy. He makes a comparison between religious works and obedience. Seek the will of the Father. If you dont do Gods will, all that wont matter.
Its important what relationship you have with God. You wont have a good relationship with God if youre disobedient and doing things that are offensive to God. There must be obedience for it to be a good relationship.
Yet a little while, and the world seeth me no more; but ye see me: because I live, ye shall live also. At that day ye shall know that I am in my Father, and ye in me, and I in you. He that hath my commandments, and keepeth them, he it is that loveth me: and he that loveth me shall be loved of my Father, and I will love him, and will manifest myself to him.
Jesus was going back to the Father. Casual observers couldnt be in his presence and see him anymore. These never really came to know God, as they should have.
The difference in the casual observer and the one who could see God was that the one who could see God had the commandments and kept them. You wont really know God until you come to the place where you obey his will. You must obey if you want to really know God.
Daily repentance is a sham. Yes, you should repent if you do wrong, but it shouldnt have to be an everyday deal. God can help us to live and obey him.
Reach the point where you seek to please God rather than try to get around your responsibilities. It takes God working on us to help us to be able to obey. We need to obey because we love. Its not about sacrificing and trying to win Gods smile. Its about obeying God and trying to do the right things.
