Put off the old man ***** Be Renewed! ***** Put on the new man
God is the spring of living water. We want to be faithful so that God will be pleased to dwell among us.
This I say therefore, and testify in the Lord, that ye henceforth walk not as other Gentiles walk, in the vanity of their mind, Having the understanding darkened, being alienated from the life of God through the ignorance that is in them, because of the blindness of their heart: Who being past feeling have given themselves over unto lasciviousness, to work all uncleanness with greediness. But ye have not so learned Christ; If so be that ye have heard him, and have been taught by him, as the truth is in Jesus: That ye put off concerning the former conversation the old man, which is corrupt according to the deceitful lusts; And be renewed in the spirit of your mind; And that ye put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness.
That you walk not as other Gentiles do Dont behave as the unsaved folks do. Dont live like a person from the world lives. They live in the vanity of their mind, have their understanding darkened, are driven by passions and desires, and walk in ignorance. All those in Christ shouldnt walk this way. Some profess to know Christ and yet walk with their understanding darkened. People do this because they know of him, but they havent heard him. They have been taught about him, not by him. True religion is knowing God. Ye have not so learned Christ We can learn Christ from Christ. There is a difference in the ones who have had a personal experience with God.
Verses 22 to 24 speak about a transition. Salvation is a change in your life. This verse says three things: 1) Put off the old man; 2) Be renewed; 3) Put on the new man. A lot of people try to do the first and third things without doing the second. Some fail because they read put off the old things. While the old things are put away, its because when the old man goes, the old things go with him. Focus on the old man being gone. Moving the things alone doesnt work. If you attempt to put off the old and put on the new without being renewed, you may improve some things, but youll still be without the life of God. Youll still be spiritually dead. Salvation is being renewed, being reborn, or resurrected. Salvation is a divine and miraculous work. It takes the power of God.
2 Corinthians 5:17-18
Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new. And all things are of God, who hath reconciled us to himself by Jesus Christ, and hath given to us the ministry of reconciliation;
If any man be in Christ, he is a new creature Hes not an old creature with new ways. Salvation isnt the new creature with the old ways. Behold, all things have become new The man is new and the ways are new. We have new ways because were a new creature. How does God make an old man into a new man? It doesnt matter how God does this, just know that he does it. All you have to understand is that God has promised to renew and re-create you, and that he is able to do it. God can refresh your life. He can make your life good.
There was a man of the Pharisees, named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews: The same came to Jesus by night, and said unto him, Rabbi, we know that thou art a teacher come from God: for no man can do these miracles that thou doest, except God be with him. Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God. Nicodemus saith unto him, How can a man be born when he is old? can he enter the second time into his mother's womb, and be born? Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God. That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. Marvel not that I said unto thee, Ye must be born again. The wind bloweth where it listeth, and thou hearest the sound thereof, but canst not tell whence it cometh, and whither it goeth: so is every one that is born of the Spirit. Nicodemus answered and said unto him, How can these things be?
Salvation far exceeds putting off the old and putting on the new. Its not reforming a child of Adam, but its being reborn as a child of God. Nicodemus was having difficulty figuring out how this would work. This is a divine, miraculous work of God. You need a desire to be born again, and faith to believe that God can do it. Understand this: God promised, and believe it.
And you hath he quickened, who were dead in trespasses and sins; Wherein in time past ye walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience: Among whom also we all had our conversation in times past in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind; and were by nature the children of wrath, even as others. But God, who is rich in mercy, for his great love wherewith he loved us, Even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ, (by grace ye are saved;) And hath raised us up together, and made us sit together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus: That in the ages to come he might shew the exceeding riches of his grace in his kindness toward us through Christ Jesus. For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast. For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.
If you sin (do things that are morally wrong) your spirit is dead because of that sin. People know that deadness is there. Youre alienated from the life of God. If youre tired of being dead spiritually, God can bring you back to life. You cant resurrect yourself. Its something that God has to do. This causes the old to go and the new to come.
And be renewed in the spirit of your mind;
This is a work that God works in our souls.
2 Corinthians 7:10-11
For godly sorrow worketh repentance to salvation not to be repented of: but the sorrow of the world worketh death. For behold this selfsame thing, that ye sorrowed after a godly sort, what carefulness it wrought in you, yea, what clearing of yourselves, yea, what indignation, yea, what fear, yea, what vehement desire, yea, what zeal, yea, what revenge! In all things ye have approved yourselves to be clear in this matter.
Godly sorrow, repentance, and salvation works a work in the heart of man. It works carefulness, clearing of yourself, indignation against wrong and evil, a fear of God, a vehement desire and zeal to work for God, and a revenge against the sin of the past. Well look at four of these.
Attributes of a New Creature
- Vehement Desire
- Clearing of yourself
Example of a Man Reborn - Zacchaeus
And Jesus entered and passed through Jericho. And, behold, there was a man named Zacchaeus, which was the chief among the publicans, and he was rich. And he sought to see Jesus who he was; and could not for the press, because he was little of stature. And he ran before, and climbed up into a sycomore tree to see him: for he was to pass that way. And when Jesus came to the place, he looked up, and saw him, and said unto him, Zacchaeus, make haste, and come down; for to day I must abide at thy house. And he made haste, and came down, and received him joyfully. And when they saw it, they all murmured, saying, That he was gone to be guest with a man that is a sinner. And Zacchaeus stood, and said unto the Lord: Behold, Lord, the half of my goods I give to the poor; and if I have taken any thing from any man by false accusation, I restore him fourfold. And Jesus said unto him, This day is salvation come to this house, forsomuch as he also is a son of Abraham. For the Son of man is come to seek and to save that which was lost.
There is no doubt that salvation came to Zacchaeus. He was a cheating tax collector before. He changed and was going to help the poor and restore what hed taken four times over. Salvation was the reason for the change. We see that all things were made new. If youre made new, youll behave like Zacchaeus, too. Youll have the four attributes and changes will happen in your life.
This is a strong desire toward God. If youre made new, youll want to read the word, to pray, and to be with the saints. Zacchaeus didnt let the crowd, or his situation stop him. He wanted to see Jesus. If you have obstacles that try to keep you from finding God, find your own sycamore tree.
This is passionate ambition to obey all of Gods will. Peter wanted to be completely cleaned, and Zaccheaus wanted to restore. If youre made new, growth will be made without prodding. Youll have a passion and a zeal about it. You wont excuse yourself from obeying God, justify disobeying God, or question Gods wisdom. You wont ask God Why? youll just do it.
Clearing of Yourself
This is repairing the harm that your sinful life caused to others, and the damage that your past may cause your new testimony. If you stole, make it right. If you hurt people, go back and apologize. Do what you can do mend things. If you broke things, repair them. Do this as you have opportunity and are able to. Make restitution.
We dont go around those things that we once did. Were careful not to do things to bring reproach on God and on his testimony. A new creature is particular, cautious, careful, and prayerful in his life.
That ye put off concerning the former conversation the old man, which is corrupt according to the deceitful lusts; And be renewed in the spirit of your mind; And that ye put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness.
The old man is corrupt. The sinful life is a living death, a wearisome existence. Leave it behind and be renewed by God. You dont have to understand how, but just that it can be.
