Mothers Day: A Message for ChildrenBro. David Chancellor

Children, obey your parents in the Lord: for this is right. Honour thy father and mother; which is the first commandment with promise; That it may be well with thee, and thou mayest live long on the earth.
Today is not only Mother's day, but Children's day. It is the day for the children to honor the parents. There is benefit in honoring your parents. Theres a promise that goes with it. The honor given to parents tells what kind of a life you live. When children demand their own way and are disrespectful, it doesnt make for a happy home. The children that grow up getting their own way aren't a "happy bunch." "Children, obey your parents" All of us have parents. We received our training from them. Give honor and respect to your parents. Even parents whove not lived for God deserve respect for having fed and clothed you. God wants it to be well with us, but men in their sinful condition dont go Gods way. If it would be well with us, we need to honor our parents and God.
While he yet talked to the people, behold, his mother and his brethren stood without, desiring to speak with him. Then one said unto him, Behold, thy mother and thy brethren stand without, desiring to speak with thee. But he answered and said unto him that told him, Who is my mother? and who are my brethren? And he stretched forth his hand toward his disciples, and said, Behold my mother and my brethren! For whosoever shall do the will of my Father which is in heaven, the same is my brother, and sister, and mother.
Jesus wasn't disrespectful to his mother. He said what he did, because he wanted the people to think. What is the role of the mother? The mother is there to nurture and develop. This goes on for years. It continues even after the child is grown and out on his/her own. The child of God is to nurture and develop. It is the work of a spiritual mother. We need to appreciate the ones that cared about our souls. Are you doing the will of God? Are you accomplishing his purpose? Part of our lives is to be given over to God for his work.
But Jerusalem which is above is free, which is the mother of us all.
The church can't save us. Yet, we are to carry the message of Christ and the burden of the lost. In this regard, the church can be considered to be the mother. We are to reach out to those needing salvation. When they find God, we're to nurture and help them to grow. We share what we learn with each other to help each other to grow. We try to see that the lives of our fellow saints goes well. The natural mother that is saved will be concerned about spiritual things as well as natural things. She will create an environment that will make it possible to do God's will.
Proverbs 31:1, 10-31
The words of king Lemuel, the prophecy that his mother taught him. Who can find a virtuous woman? for her price is far above rubies. The heart of her husband doth safely trust in her, so that he shall have no need of spoil. She will do him good and not evil all the days of her life. She seeketh wool, and flax, and worketh willingly with her hands. She is like the merchants' ships; she bringeth her food from afar. She riseth also while it is yet night, and giveth meat to her household, and a portion to her maidens. She considereth a field, and buyeth it: with the fruit of her hands she planteth a vineyard. She girdeth her loins with strength, and strengtheneth her arms. She perceiveth that her merchandise is good: her candle goeth not out by night. She layeth her hands to the spindle, and her hands hold the distaff. She stretcheth out her hand to the poor; yea, she reacheth forth her hands to the needy. She is not afraid of the snow for her household: for all her household are clothed with scarlet. She maketh herself coverings of tapestry; her clothing is silk and purple. Her husband is known in the gates, when he sitteth among the elders of the land. She maketh fine linen, and selleth it; and delivereth girdles unto the merchant. Strength and honour are her clothing; and she shall rejoice in time to come. She openeth her mouth with wisdom; and in her tongue is the law of kindness. She looketh well to the ways of her household, and eateth not the bread of idleness. Her children arise up, and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praiseth her. Many daughters have done virtuously, but thou excellest them all. Favour is deceitful, and beauty is vain: but a woman that feareth the LORD, she shall be praised. Give her of the fruit of her hands; and let her own works praise her in the gates.
The words of King Lemuel that his mother taught him. This king had a mother that taught him. Teaching is very important. Children should be taught, so that they can handle the challenges that life has. Mothers do teach. It's not just the natural mother that teaches, though. There is a nurturing that happens when the people of God come together. We can learn from the hard knocks of those that went before us.
There is a reason for the honor. There is work that goes with the title. This describes someone who is not living a life of ease. It describes labor and effort. Honor should be given because honor is due. A good mother doesnt do things just when its convenient. When the baby is hungry, the baby gets fed, whether mom felt like it or not. She works when she doesnt feel like it and when shed rather be doing something else. Real mothers put the interest of their children first. Mothers that live as God would have them to are worthy of honor because of the effort expended. There is endeavoring and labor. We should honor them because the honor is earned and well-deserved.
The picture of the virtuous woman is also a picture of how Gods church should be. God's church should stand even when it doesn't bring praise from the world. Strength and honor are in the robe of righteousness. The church should be as giving, loving, and nurturing as a mother when it comes to seeking after souls. Mothers try to correct the course of their children when they're going the wrong way. It's a life of sacrifice and giving for the cause of God. While the church should be honored, respected, and looked up to; it's an honor that should be earned. Walk worthy of the honor. Reach out to ones in need around you. There is a lot of help that can be given that isn't monetary. We need to live worthy of the name of God. We don't want to bring shame to the name of God. Be generous and giving. Be the God-first generation. Seek to lift him up and glorify his name.
We seek the honor of God. We live right because we want his honor on our soul. We want to do the will of the Father. As God's church, we should keep our eyes on God and seek to please him and lift him up. We want to honor God above everything else. If we love and honor God as we ought, we'll love and appreciate God's people, and our natural mothers, too.
Watch your words. Be respectful toward everyone. Respect the poor and needy. See it as an opportunity to give. Show a care and a concern. A kind word can help. Reach out to those that need help and need God. Appreciate the ones that cared about your soul. Be that one that cares for someone else. All men need to know Christ.
