And he entered into a ship, and passed over, and came into his own city. And, behold, they brought to him a man sick of the palsy, lying on a bed: and Jesus seeing their faith said unto the sick of the palsy; Son, be of good cheer; thy sins be forgiven thee. And, behold, certain of the scribes said within themselves, This man blasphemeth. And Jesus knowing their thoughts said, Wherefore think ye evil in your hearts? For whether is easier, to say, Thy sins be forgiven thee; or to say, Arise, and walk? But that ye may know that the Son of man hath power on earth to forgive sins, (then saith he to the sick of the palsy,) Arise, take up thy bed, and go unto thine house. And he arose, and departed to his house. But when the multitudes saw it, they marvelled, and glorified God, which had given such power unto men.
This happened in Capernaum. Four men brought this one to Jesus to be healed. "Jesus seeing their faith..." They had come expecting this one to be healed in his body. Jesus handled this case differently. They expected Jesus to say, "Arise and walk." Yet, he said, "Son, be of good cheer; thy sins be forgiven thee." They could accept that he could raise up the sick, but they couldn't accept the forgiveness of sins. Today people are just the opposite. People can believe that God can and will forgive sins, but not that he will heal. Neither of these are within man's power; both require the work and power of God. These had seen enough to realize that Christ had the power to heal the body. Jesus wanted to take them a step further. He wanted them to realize he could also forgive and heal the soul. Christ is able to do something greater than to heal the body; he can heal the soul. Humanity is at a low point of faith. They don't really believe that God can heal - body OR soul. A soul bound in sin is not healed. Christ is able to heal both soul and body; to make mankind whole. Christ heals bodies yet today, but he came primarily t heal the soul.
And he went forth again by the sea side; and all the multitude resorted unto him, and he taught them. And as he passed by, he saw Levi the son of Alphaeus sitting at the receipt of custom, and said unto him, Follow me. And he arose and followed him. And it came to pass, that, as Jesus sat at meat in his house, many publicans and sinners sat also together with Jesus and his disciples: for there were many, and they followed him. And when the scribes and Pharisees saw him eat with publicans and sinners, they said unto his disciples, How is it that he eateth and drinketh with publicans and sinners? When Jesus heard it, he saith unto them, They that are whole have no need of the physician, but they that are sick: I came not to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.
Jesus called Levi, who was a publican, a tax collector. Publicans were seen as traitors because they collected money for the Romans. Christ not only called Levi, but he took an interest in him. Pharisees thought they should keep separate from sinners. God called us to walk among men of every kind. He wants us to walk among sinners. He wants us to be around those who don't know him. The Pharisees were distressed by the fact that Christ was socializing with sinners. Christ told them that those who see nothing wrong with themselves weren't he ones he called. He came to heal those who could see the sickness of sin destroying them and ruining their lives. Doctors would have a tough time treating the sick if they didn't go around them. Those that would treat the sick need the treatment first. If one would take the gospel to sinners, they need to be cleansed first. You have to have the work of God done in your soul. God wants your soul to be cured from sin. Then he wants you to tell others about the cure. Christ came as the physician for the soul. People need to realize that there is a healer for their "heart condition."
Hear, O heavens, and give ear, O earth: for the Lord hath spoken, I have nourished and brought up children, and they have rebelled against me. The ox knoweth his owner, and the ass his master's crib: but Israel doth not know, my people doth not consider. Ah sinful nation, a people laden with iniquity, a seed of evildoers, children that are corrupters: they have forsaken the Lord, they have provoked the Holy One of Israel unto anger, they are gone away backward. Why should ye be stricken any more? ye will revolt more and more: the whole head is sick, and the whole heart faint. From the sole of the foot even unto the head there is no soundness in it; but wounds, and bruises, and putrifying sores: they have not been closed, neither bound up, neither mollified with ointment.
Isaiah said this was a sinful nation. The nurture and admonition of the Lord failed. There's a condition in the heart of every man that needs help. The animals do what they are supposed to, but mankind doesn't. These knew what God wanted, but they were yet sick. There was a condition in the head and heart that wasn't what it needed to be. More correction could have been given, but it wouldn't heal the problem. Punishment had been administered, but there was a physician needed. They needed a change so that they wouldn't rebel against God. Just covering a problem won't make it go away. There is a need for one who can correct the condition.
A voice was heard upon the high places, weeping and supplications of the children of Israel: for they have perverted their way, and they have forgotten the Lord their God. Return, ye backsliding children, and I will heal your backslidings. Behold, we come unto thee; for thou art the Lord our God. Truly in vain is salvation hoped for from the hills, and from the multitude of mountains: truly in the Lord our God is the salvation of Israel. For shame hath devoured the labour of our fathers from our youth; their flocks and their herds, their sons and their daughters. We lie down in our shame, and our confusion covereth over us: for we have sinned against the Lord our God, we and our fathers, from our youth even unto this day, and have not obeyed the voice of the Lord our God.
They could look to all kinds of things. They could call on false gods, but there was no deliverance. God had turned them over to what they were seeking after and wasn't helping them anymore. This happened over and over with Israel. "Return, ye backsliding children, and I will heal your backslidings..." God can heal that which causes people to turn back. He has a complete healing. He makes it where we can serve him as he intended. It's good to have forgiveness, but we need complete deliverance. He can purge all that out and correct the condition. He will heal the sinful condition. People don't need to hear that they have an incurable disease. That's what people are hearing today when they hear that they can't help but sin. God can heal you and make you normal and whole. The head is sick, but Christ came to heal the condition. He comes to fix our thinking. People, as a general rule, are selfish. There is a healer for the head and heart - and it is Christ.
And he came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up: and, as his custom was, he went into the synagogue on the Sabbath day, and stood up for to read. And there was delivered unto him the book of the prophet Esaias. And when he had opened the book, he found the place where it was written, The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised, To preach the acceptable year of the Lord. And he closed the book, and he gave it again to the minister, and sat down. And the eyes of all them that were in the synagogue were fastened on him. And he began to say unto them, This day is this scripture fulfilled in your ears.
This is a reading from the book of Isaiah. The condition was unhealed and sick. Jesus said, God has sent me to fix the problem. Christ read the prophecy and says, "It's here." There's no longer a need to be sick and in want of healing. The healer is here. Unbelief will keep you from receiving the healing for body and soul. Israel still needs Jesus to heal their hearts and land. They've rejected the healer, the one that could help them to live in peace and harmony. Every soul needs the healer. There were some that thought because of their heritage they were fine. In spite of what we've been taught, the good things we've been trained in, everyone needs God. Without God, the heart is still sick. Christ came to fix the heart. The woman brought to Christ taken in sin - he saved her life - not only physically, but her soul got healed, too. It's greater to know your sins are forgiven and your heart is right. Why is it greater? Because this body will eventually wear out, but if you are healed with your soul, when that happens you get to go to be with God. If you still have that sickness of soul, then it will come between you and God. God can still heal the body. Prayer makes a huge difference. We appreciate the healing of the body, but the healing of the soul is so much greater. Christ healed souls, too. The work done on the day of Pentecost was done that the soul can be healed. He can and does still heal souls. Seek out the Great Physician.
