What manner of person...?

Sometimes were slow to catch on to things, but God is patient with us. Hes got a message that hes trying to get through to us. Some souls he cant get through to due to some fault of theirs. Its a sobering thought

James 1:22-25

But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves. For if any be a hearer of the word, and not a doer, he is like unto a man beholding his natural face in a glass: For he beholdeth himself, and goeth his way, and straightway forgetteth what manner of man he was. But whoso looketh into the perfect law of liberty, and continueth therein, he being not a forgetful hearer, but a doer of the work, this man shall be blessed in his deed.

and straightway forgetteth what manner of man he was

2 Peter 3:10-12

But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night; in the which the heavens shall pass away with a great noise, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat, the earth also and the works that are therein shall be burned up. Seeing then that all these things shall be dissolved, what manner of persons ought ye to be in all holy conversation and godliness, Looking for and hasting unto the coming of the day of God, wherein the heavens being on fire shall be dissolved, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat?

Two related points are drawn from these verses:

  • What manner of person am I?
  • What manner of person ought I to be?

The answers are important to each of us. Peter tells us that all these things will be dissolved and we will appear before the judgment seat of Christ. What type of person we are now, will decide whether were pleasing or deceived then. The Bible tells us how we ought to be like Christ.

Ephesians 4:11-15

And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers; For the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ: Till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ: That we henceforth be no more children, tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men, and cunning craftiness, whereby they lie in wait to deceive; But speaking the truth in love, may grow up into him in all things, which is the head, even Christ:

This tells us the manner of person we ought to be: Christ. This manner of man will have boldness in the day of judgment. We can have boldness in the day of judgment, when were like Christ here. (see 1 John 3:2) Its the ministrys work to help you become like Christ. Its the ministrys work to help you answer these two questions so that you can have the perfection and fullness of Christ. The work of the ministry is the sanctification of the saints. The ministry asks us the questions through the message. True spiritual growth comes, however, when you ask the questions. Have you asked yourself what sort of person you are, and what sort of person you should become, lately? Who searches your heart? The minister can endeavor to search your heart, but true spiritual growth comes when you search.

1 John 2:27

But the anointing which ye have received of him abideth in you, and ye need not that any man teach you: but as the same anointing teacheth you of all things, and is truth, and is no lie, and even as it hath taught you, ye shall abide in him.

This doesnt mean teachers have no benefit. Yet, for the spiritual man, teachers arent essential for his spiritual growth.

Hebrews 8:11

And they shall not teach every man his neighbour, and every man his brother, saying, Know the Lord: for all shall know me, from the least to the greatest.

The spiritual man doesnt need anyone to tell him to know the Lord. Who searches your heart? If youre always relying on the preacher to show you what kind of person you are, and what kind of person you ought to be, then you are carnal. If you rely on man to teach, you dont have the anointing. Are you relying on the preacher to ask the hard spiritual questions? If your only convictions come from the ministry, youre not spiritual. Do you know what you are? Do you know what Christ is like? The anointing will lead you to find the answer. The serious soul will seek for the answers to these questions in the light of eternity. The serious soul examines himself in the light of eternity.

2 Corinthians 4:18; 2 Peter 3:11

While we look not at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen: for the things which are seen are temporal; but the things which are not seen are eternal.

Seeing then that all these things shall be dissolved, what manner of persons ought ye to be in all holy conversation and godliness,

Too often, we make spiritual decisions based on how it will profit us in this life. We allow things that God disapproves of, or let slide things that we shouldnt have, because it will either help us or hinder us here. Examine things in the light of eternity. Are you willing to base your eternal salvation on the reasoning that maybe God doesnt require something of us that we know he does? Do we justify things that we really shouldnt? How do we conduct ourselves? The serious soul considers their conduct in light of eternity. Seeing all these things will be dissolved, what should we be like to face our God? You must know the answer to these two questions in the light of eternity. A very light soul quibbles over what they can and cant do. Does God require this? It makes allowance for the flesh to give occasion for the flesh. We should ask God about things and then measure up.

How Do We Know What Kind of Person We Are?

The type of person we should be is like Christ, but we need to know what we are now. Its hard to know where we are going if we dont know where were at now. You have to know both. Its impossible to become like Christ unless you see that youre not like Christ. You cannot see yourself. This makes this a spiritual challenge. God has given us some tools to see where were at.

The Mirror Gods Word

James 1:22-25

But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves. For if any be a hearer of the word, and not a doer, he is like unto a man beholding his natural face in a glass: For he beholdeth himself, and goeth his way, and straightway forgetteth what manner of man he was. But whoso looketh into the perfect law of liberty, and continueth therein, he being not a forgetful hearer, but a doer of the work, this man shall be blessed in his deed.

This mirror is for beholding yourself. You dont need a mirror to see other people. If you look in the mirror at yourself, you cant see other people. Dont misuse Gods mirror. The mirror is for beholding yourself. If youre inclined to examine others, God has a reproof for you.

Romans 14:4

Who art thou that judgest another man's servant? to his own master he standeth or falleth. Yea, he shall be holden up: for God is able to make him stand.

Who do you think you are? God knows where others stand. God wants to hold up his servants. When we begin to examine one another, is the desire to hold up that one, or is it to trip them up? God didnt give us the mirror to use on others.

Eye Salve

Revelation 3:17-18

Because thou sayest, I am rich, and increased with goods, and have need of nothing; and knowest not that thou art wretched, and miserable, and poor, and blind, and naked: I counsel thee to buy of me gold tried in the fire, that thou mayest be rich; and white raiment, that thou mayest be clothed, and that the shame of thy nakedness do not appear; and anoint thine eyes with eyesalve, that thou mayest see.

A mirror is not useful if you are blind. When it comes to our own faults and spiritual needs, unfortunately, we are blind. Because of this phenomenon (not being able to see our own needs), Christ counsels us to get eye salve so that we can see ourselves as we are. If we looking the word asking God to help us to see ourselves, he will show us where our needs are. (See also Philippians 3:15)

1 John 4:17

Herein is our love made perfect, that we may have boldness in the day of judgment: because as he is, so are we in this world.

Are you ready for the judgment day? Have you lost sight of eternity? If you have, youre probably not ready. What does it mean to be read? As he is Are you like Christ/ Are you a serious soul? Are you serious about God and salvation? Christ is the life of a serious soul. Do you weigh your actions in the light of eternity? Its your responsibility to know.
