In one accord

Acts 4:23-31

And being let go, they went to their own company, and reported all that the chief priests and elders had said unto them. And when they heard that, they lifted up their voice to God with one accord, and said, Lord, thou art God, which hast made heaven, and earth, and the sea, and all that in them is: Who by the mouth of thy servant David hast said, Why did the heathen rage, and the people imagine vain things? The kings of the earth stood up, and the rulers were gathered together against the Lord, and against his Christ. For of a truth against thy holy child Jesus, whom thou hast anointed, both Herod, and Pontius Pilate, with the Gentiles, and the people of Israel, were gathered together, For to do whatsoever thy hand and thy counsel determined before to be done. And now, Lord, behold their threatenings: and grant unto thy servants, that with all boldness they may speak thy word, By stretching forth thine hand to heal; and that signs and wonders may be done by the name of thy holy child Jesus. And when they had prayed, the place was shaken where they were assembled together; and they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and they spake the word of God with boldness.

This was the beginning of the persecution of Gods church. Peter and John had been brought before the council and threatened. They went back and told everyone what had been done. They started praying and they had good results for their prayers. It is still important that we be able to stand together for God and his cause. God and his cause should come first, and everything else should be put out of the way. These were in one accord. We need to be in one accord first. Get everything out of the way with you and your brother. People seeking to further their own cause will hinder the work.

Matthew 20:20-24

Then came to him the mother of Zebedees children with her sons, worshipping him, and desiring a certain thing of him. And he said unto her, What wilt thou? She saith unto him, Grant that these my two sons may sit, the one on thy right hand, and the other on the left, in thy kingdom. But Jesus answered and said, Ye know not what ye ask. Are ye able to drink of the cup that I shall drink of, and to be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with? They say unto him, We are able. And he saith unto them, Ye shall drink indeed of my cup, and be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with: but to sit on my right hand, and on my left, is not mine to give, but it shall be given to them for whom it is prepared of my Father. And when the ten heard it, they were moved with indignation against the two brethren.

This pictures the need of being one. The mother of these two wanted a small favor. She wanted the highest two positions for her boys. They were picturing a different kind of kingdom than what Christ came to bring. Still, this incident shows us the problem. These were still of the loaves and fishes or the whats in it for me? crowd. When men seek their own way, it will hinder Gods work. When men seek to further their own interests, it will hinder the work of God every time. Judas betrayed Christ because his interest was money. When these faced the angry mob, they fled. They werent as committed to the cause as they needed to be. They thought they were, but they werent. They werent in one accord then. Something happened between then and after Pentecost. On the day of Pentecost, they came together as God intended. When they were one, God moved on the scene. We need to be one. This wasnt an ecumenical movement, but it was the oneness (or unity) that God intended.

John 15:3-5

Now ye are clean through the word which I have spoken unto you. Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, except it abide in the vine; no more can ye, except ye abide in me. I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing.

Christ was preparing them for what was ahead. For people to come together, they must be clean. We must all be washed in the blood of Jesus. The ones in Acts werent ignoring what was wrong with one another they were clean. God would have us come together as a clean body washed in the blood of the Lamb. Each one made sure that everything was clear. Christ also emphasizes that our dependence is on God. There is another account in Acts about another gathering of people. All of mankind put Christ on the cross. Men can come together temporarily for a cause. This isnt the same thing as being one in God. We recognize that without God we can do nothing, especially not for his cause. We come together so that God can work in a greater way. Oneness is essential to this happening.

1 Peter 2:1-2

Wherefore laying aside all malice, and all guile, and hypocrisies, and envies, all evil speakings, As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word, that ye may grow thereby:

Peter saw what lead up to Pentecost. We shouldnt have malice toward any. Lay aside all deception and trickery. We dont want to come together with our own hidden agendas. If we want to accomplish Gods work, we need one goal that Gods work will be accomplished. The great movements and reformations happened when men put their agendas aside and took up Gods cause. Envy destroys. It was the reason that Christ was crucified. Envy will destroy the work of God. Evil speaking is speaking evil about someone else. Its using words to the detriment of others. Lay these things aside and come together for Gods cause. Come together in purity that we might see a greater working of Gods spirit. Are we holding anything that would separate us from Gods people? If something is hindering, lay it aside. We should desire that Gods work will prosper.

2 Peter 1:10-11

Wherefore the rather, brethren, give diligence to make your calling and election sure: for if ye do these things, ye shall never fall: For so an entrance shall be ministered unto you abundantly into the everlasting kingdom of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.

Give diligence to make sure things are as they should be with you. If we each do this, well all be drawn closer together. Make sure youre not doing anything to hinder. God can see in us what we cant see in ourselves. Ask God to show you what needs work, and to help you to move it out of the way. Work on you. The thing we can do most to further the work of God is to be sure that were right with God. If we all do this, well come together. If we are totally committed to God, he can be glorified. We should desire him to manifest himself so that he will be glorified. Give diligence to your experience with God. If theres something between us and someone else we need to get it taken care of. Dont have anything in you to cause a separation. The ones in Acts werent willing to give up God to be part of a group. The results they saw were due to the fact that individually things were clear between them and God. Two or three can be in one accord when theyre together. They were there to stand together. Were here to offer one another what we have. Come together as one, and put Gods cause above everything else, and God can still work in a mighty way. God would have us come to him as one. He needs to move, but if we dont make a way, whom will he do it through? This is personal. Give diligence to your experience. Give diligence to the purpose of God.
