1 Corinthians 3:10-15
According to the grace of God which is given unto me, as a wise masterbuilder, I have laid the foundation, and another buildeth thereon. But let every man take heed how he buildeth thereupon. For other foundation can no man lay than that is laid, which is Jesus Christ. Now if any man build upon this foundation gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, stubble; Every man's work shall be made manifest: for the day shall declare it, because it shall be revealed by fire; and the fire shall try every man's work of what sort it is. If any man's work abide which he hath built thereupon, he shall receive a reward. If any man's work shall be burned, he shall suffer loss: but he himself shall be saved; yet so as by fire.
Paul compares this to the process of building. Paul laid the foundation that was, in reality, already there. Jesus is the foundation. Christ brings the stability that we need. We can build on Christ, or we can build on the sand. To build on the ideas and theories of man is to build on the sand. but another buildeth thereon Once the message is brought, the one bringing the message has done his part. The minister can only lay the foundation; we have to build on that. We have to build in the direction of heaven, if we plan on making it there. Materials are a significant piece of a building. When we build spiritually, we dont want to be cheap. Spiritually, we arent looking for a sod house. We want a house thats built to stand. To have that kind of a building, we need to put precious things in it every day. Life will test our building. When we are in hot trials, well find out what weve built. Finding out how youve built will help to keep you from being lost. Put things in your life that will take the fire. Some things will come your way to show you what the foundation is. The fire can help you see the place that you need to grow in. What are you going to build into your life? Precious stones arent found in a gravel pit. The really precious things have to be dug out. They dont just fall into your hands. Do some digging if youd get the precious stones. We have to pursue the graces that wed like to have in our lives. The things we put in our lives each day will determine the final outcome of the building. Some things dont look the same at 30 as they did at three. We want to grow in the direction of where and what we want to be. How will we deal with what were taught? Are we adding it to our building? If you would know the word of God, you have to meditate on it. Relate the things in life to the word of God. Not everything that presents itself to your mind (even if it has a scripture attached) should be put in your life. Build the appropriate attitudes into your life. Contemplate the things you encounter with What would God have to say about this and How would God have me handle this?
Therefore whosoever heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them, I will liken him unto a wise man, which built his house upon a rock: And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell not: for it was founded upon a rock. And every one that heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them not, shall be likened unto a foolish man, which built his house upon the sand: And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell: and great was the fall of it.
Christ describes the foundation, but he asks what we are doing with what he says. We could assent to what he said, that theyre good things, but have we done what he said? We dont just hear it because its a good way to stir our minds. Do we do what we find there? If you would build, at some point, you have to do. What do you do? You hear what is said, you see the example, then you must do. The building isnt in the hearing, but in the doing. The building will be tested by the elements. We expect that. The deterioration isnt from a tornado (in Oklahoma) but in the changing of the elements. Small incremental things can cause deterioration. We need to build for the little things of life that would wear and eat at you. If we build right, itll be able to take the test. What we do matters more than what we think or claim to believe.
For if I build again the things which I destroyed, I make myself a transgressor.
building the things you once destroyed These appeared to be going back to what they left behind. What is the profit in trying to build when youre always changing the plans? You cant afford to keep building and tearing down. Figure out what right is and stick with it. Too many havent found the foundation, yet. Hay isnt known for its durability. When its your soul, build something that will last. A lot of people know what they want, but dont seem to have the vision to achieve what they want. Observe your own life and see what you need to do to build the kind of life that God would be pleased with. You wont have the satisfaction of a job well done if youre always building and tearing down. If youve messed up, you do need to tear it down, and build it right. Yet, you need to be consistent if you would accomplish something for God. We want to build right. Put in the things that would make you like Christ. The foundation and the quality of the building should match. The foundation requires the quality of life that Christ had. It will require drawing from the Spirit of God for these graces each day.
But ye, beloved, building up yourselves on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Ghost, Keep yourselves in the love of God, looking for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ unto eternal life.
but ye building Everyone is building. The building is done by coming into the presence of God. We need to get the materials we need to build. You have to let the graces work in your life. The Holy Spirit wont force you to do anything, hell point the way, but you have to do the walking. keep yourselves in the love of God There are those who would try to cause in you something that isnt the love of God. Keep yourself in the love of God anyway. What are you treasuring? What do you do with your treasures? What do you churn over? Is it evil treasure or good treasure? We could take each little hurt and treasure it in our hearts, but thats not a good idea. Our thought life is part of our building. What are you treasuring? Keep yourself in the love of God. Clean the rubbish out of your construction site. Clean the evil treasure out so that the project can continue. Itll be tested. The devil would have you build hate in your building. If you do, your building wont be durable and it wont last. How are you building? Be faithful in prayer. Ask for the grace and help to build right. Do what it takes to stay in the love of God. Someone else cant do it for you. Build a life that is like Christ.
