The Importance of Personal Convictions

Do you have a passionate conviction about truth? God wouldn't have us tossed around by everything that comes along. Are you indifferent to the things of God? Being a Christian brings conviction.

Matthew 16:13-17
When Jesus came into the coasts of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, saying, Whom do men say that I the Son of man am? And they said, Some say that thou art John the Baptist: some, Elias; and others, Jeremias, or one of the prophets. He saith unto them, But whom say ye that I am? And Simon Peter answered and said, Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God. And Jesus answered and said unto him, Blessed art thou, Simon Barjona: for flesh and blood hath not revealed it unto thee, but my Father which is in heaven.

What is a "personal conviction"? Conviction - firm persuasion; strong belief; being completely convinced. Convictions, by their very nature, are personal. We can't be convinced for someone else. Personal convictions occur when the Spirit of God reveals a truth or when your faith is inspired to believe a promise. It is a divine revelation. Many a misguided minister has preached against personal convictions. They tell you that you don't have to understand, just obey, and trust them. They say God will honor your obedience and will eventually reveal the truth to you. This is not only false, but very dangerous for our souls. Personal convictions are the hinge-pin of our faith. They hold our faith together and support what we do. Personal convictions are essential to our faith. Without a personal conviction of Jesus, you won't enter heaven. Without a personal conviction of truth, you won't know God. Personal convictions shouldn't be confused with private interpretations. Private interpretations are wrong. There is a relationship, however, between the two.

2 Peter 1:19-21
We have also a more sure word of prophecy; whereunto ye do well that ye take heed, as unto a light that shineth in a dark place, until the day dawn, and the day star arise in your hearts: Knowing this first, that no prophecy of the scripture is of any private interpretation. For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost.

"No prophecy of the scripture is of any private interpretation." No one scripture can mean one thing to one and something totally different to the other. Either one or both is wrong. A scripture can't apply to one person and not to another. God is not a respecter of persons. We have a more sure word of prophecy than that. If we believe and interpret it however we choose to, then it isn't sure. God's word is forever settled in heaven. Some still interpret it falsely, to their own destruction.

2 Peter 3:15-16
And account that the longsuffering of our Lord is salvation; even as our beloved brother Paul also according to the wisdom given unto him hath written unto you; As also in all his epistles, speaking in them of these things; in which are some things hard to be understood, which they that are unlearned and unstable wrest, as they do also the other scriptures, unto their own destruction.

Some wrest (pervert) the scriptures, to their own destruction. What is the key to avoiding the snare of private interpretation?

2 Peter 1:21
For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost.

Since the scripture was inspired by the Holy Ghost when written, only he can help us to understand what it means. The relationship between private interpretations and personal convictions is this: If God hasn't opened our understanding, we will have private interpretations; if God gives understanding, then you will have a personal conviction. God would have every truth to become a personal conviction. We don't obey because of some hidden motive. We should serve the Lord in sincerity and truth (no hidden agendas or motives). God has ordained that your understanding be this sure: "God, himself, has shown me..." He would have his word be a sure word of prophecy to us.

Matthew 11:25-27
At that time Jesus answered and said, I thank thee, O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because thou hast hid these things from the wise and prudent, and hast revealed them unto babes. Even so, Father: for so it seemed good in thy sight. All things are delivered unto me of my Father: and no man knoweth the Son, but the Father; neither knoweth any man the Father, save the Son, and he to whomsoever the Son will reveal him.

If you don't have a divine revelation from God, you probably don't know him.

John 16:13
Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come.

"He will guide you into all truth." God desires all truth to be a personal conviction. He would have everything you believe to be a personal conviction.

  1. Has God's word become a personal conviction to you?
  2. Is every truth a personal conviction?
  3. Do you have any personal convictions? Is there anything for which you would suffer, deny self, live or die for?

How does conviction work?

  1. 2 Peter 1:21
For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost.

The scriptures were given by the inspiration of the Holy Ghost. God's word is inspired by the Holy Ghost.

  2. God has ordained that his word be taught by the inspiration of the Holy Ghost.

    1 Corinthians 2:12-13
Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the spirit which is of God; that we might know the things that are freely given to us of God. Which things also we speak, not in the words which man's wisdom teacheth, but which the Holy Ghost teacheth; comparing spiritual things with spiritual.

God has ordained that those who teach his word do so by the Holy Ghost. It isn't done by man's intellect. We don't teach it by comparing it to other philosophies.

  3. God has ordained that those that learn his world learn by inspiration of the Holy Ghost.

    1 John 2:26-27
These things have I written unto you concerning them that seduce you. But the anointing which ye have received of him abideth in you, and ye need that not that any man teach you: but as the same anointing teacheth you of all things, and is truth, and is no lie, and even as it hath taught you, ye shall abide in him.

The convictions of the Holy Ghost work through the whole process. The Spirit must be woven through all, revealing truth. This goes beyond a blind obedience to doctrine. It creates a passion for truth, unmovable from the truth. Personal convictions will make you steadfast and unmovable.

**Warnings**

  1. Beware when you don't see the conviction of the Holy Spirit in someone's life. They are probably not saved.

  2. Beware when men can change their convictions easily. It probably means they weren't convinced, or else there is some deceit, some hidden motive at work. God reveals truth to all who are saved.

Types of Convictions

Universal Convictions:
God convicts all men of some truth, so that they are without excuse.

Titus 2:11-12
For the grace of God that bringeth salvation hath appeared to all men, Teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly, in this present world;

God's Holy Spirit is busy at work. People would like to claim that they don't see or aren't convicted of things. The Spirit of God is trying to teach and to convince. There will be a conviction of wrong.

Romans 1:18-20
For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who hold the truth in unrighteousness. Because that which may be known of God is manifest in them; for God hath shewed it unto them. For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse.

God's Spirit makes things so clearly seen that no one has an excuse.

John 16:7-8
Nevertheless I tell you the truth; It is expedient for you that I go away: for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I depart, I will send him unto you. And when he is come, he will reprove the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment:

The Spirit of God is at work today, teaching the world.

Other Convictions
Some convictions of truth only come with your interest in learning the truth.

Acts 17:11
These were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so.

These had an interest. They heard and then searched to see if it was so. The Spirit stirred them with a desire to know. Everyone that is saved has this kind of conviction, also. It is a desire to find and know the truth. It is troubling to see a religious person with no passion for truth.

Matthew 16:13-18
When Jesus came into the coasts of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, saying, Whom do men say that I the Son of man am? And they said, Some say that thou art John the Baptist: some, Elias; and others, Jeremias, or one of the prophets. He saith unto them, But whom say ye that I am? And Simon Peter answered and said, Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God. And Jesus answered and said unto him, Blessed art thou, Simon Barjona: for flesh and blood hath not revealed it unto thee, but my Father which is in heaven. And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.

What is the foundation of your religion? Is it flesh and blood, or a revelation from the Father? The gates of hell will not prevail against the Rock - Christ. Only those with a personal conviction of Jesus and the word of God have heaven secure for them.
