Who Then Can Be Saved?

Mark 10:17-27
"...and they were astonished out of measure, saying among themselves, who then can be saved?" When a sinner comes to God, the question, "how can I be saved?", is unavoidable. Jesus gives the seeker hope. "Jesus beholding him loved him." Jesus beholds the sinner and loves him. "With men it is impossible, but not with God: for with God all things are possible." Everybody ought to want to be saved. The Lord is gracious. Salvation can grace every aspect of our life. It brings newness of life. Old things are passed away and behold all things are become new. Everybody ought to want to be saved. Who, then, can be saved?

1 Timothy 1:15
Sinners can be saved. "This is a faithful saying, and worthy of all acceptation..." Christ came to save sinners. The seeking soul often doubts that Christ came to save them. The good news is that Christ came to save sinners. What sinners will he save? Who can be saved?

  1. Blasphemers can be saved.

    1 Timothy 1:12-13
Before Paul was saved he was a blasphemer, but God had mercy. A blasphemer abuses or despises God and sacred things. A blasphemer might find it impossible to find forgiveness with men, but not with God. Though a sinner be a blasphemer, when they repent and seek God for mercy, they can be saved.

  2. A persecutor can be saved. A persecutor is one who does harm again and again to others because of their beliefs. Paul was a bad persecutor because he persecuted God's people. A persecutor may find it hard to get forgiveness from those he has persecuted, but not with God.

  3. Fornicators, adulterers, homosexuals, etc. can be saved.

    1 Corinthians 6:9-11
Those that do these things are not saved, but they can be: fornicators, adulterers, homosexuals. Man might find it impossible to forgive such sin, but God forgives. Man can't deliver from such sin, but with God all things are possible. God can wash these sins away.

  4. The backslider can be saved.

    Hosea 14:1-4
The backslider may feel he can hardly be saved. They may feel it is impossible to return. But God is there and willing to save the backslider. The message of the gospel: that those that were the enemies of God can be reconciled back to him.

Romans 5:6-10
Verse 7 tells what is possible with man. It is the extent to which man will go. It is possible that man would lay down his life for another good man. It is impossible for man to lay down his life for a sinner. Yet, this is what God did for each of us. We used to be enemies and we no longer are the things we were. God was able to save us and reconcile us to him.

2 Corinthians 5:18-21
This is the gospel message. It has been committed to us. Our word and ministry is that of reconciliation. Who can be saved? You can be saved. No matter who you are or what you have done, you can be saved. (see also, Romans 10:13; 1 Timothy 2:4; 2 Corinthians 3:9; Revelation 22:7) "Whosoever will" can be saved.

Titus 3:3-7
Everybody ought to want to be saved. His mercy is shed on us abundantly. We don't do what we once did. What made the difference? The kindness and love of God our Saviour toward us appeared.
