What it Means to be Saved

Romans 5:6-9
For when we were yet without strength, in due time Christ died for the ungodly. For scarcely for a righteous man will one die: yet peradventure for a good man some would even dare to die. But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. Much more then, being now justified by his blood, we shall be saved from the wrath through him.

"For when we were yet without strength..." Part of being free is being able to do what is right. While we were yet in our sins, Christ died for us. He saw our lack of strength and capability, and he died for us. Ungodly - un-godlike; not in a position or condition to come into the presence of God. God is too pure to look upon evil. Sin makes a man ungodly. When man fell into sin, he became ungodly. Sin is disobedience to God. God made Adam and Eve like himself, but they were disobedient and brought sin into their lives. When people disobey God, they become ungodly. Christ died for the ungodly because they had no means by which to be reconciled to God. How can we walk with God if we do things that are contrary to his will? We needed someone to make up for the offense. God sent Christ. There was nothing that we could do to make a change. He made a way that we could be saved from wrath through him.

  • Doesn't mean you are a church member
  • Does mean that you are delivered from something that was destructive and destroying.

The soul in sin needs to be saved before it is destroyed by sin. There is a price that needs to be paid for sin. People are quick to demand justice. If God had demanded justice, we would have received our just due for our sins. Yet, he has shown mercy by having Christ's death stand in the place of what we deserved. We can now be one with him. If someone says they are saved, it means that they have been delivered from the wrath of God through the blood of Christ.

How does someone get saved? By acknowledging that they have a need to be saved. You first have to realize that you deserve the wrath of God on you. Sin is a shameful things that most of us don't want to acknowledge. Yet, the Bible says that the one that covers his sin won't prosper.

John 3:17-21
For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved. He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God. And this is the condemnation, that the light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil. For every one that doeth evil hateth the light, neither cometh to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved. But he that doeth truth cometh to the light, that his deeds may be made manifest, that they are wrought in God.

God didn't send his son to condemn, but that we might be saved. We need to recognize our true condition The ones that do evil don't want to face the idea of being ungodly and wrong. Folks can try to cover it, but that means that they will stay in condemnation. God sees everything that you are doing; you're caught already. God knows about it. Our sin is not unnoticed by God. You're not trying to escape the wrath of man, but the wrath of God. Face the condition you're in, so that you can be saved. A drowning man may be surrounded by life preservers, but unless he thinks he needs them, he won't use them, and thus will drown. If we don't recognize our need of a Savior, we will be lost. The devil keeps people in bondage by keeping them ashamed to acknowledge the sin. He's bilked them out of their heritage, but they can get it back. They just have to want to be forgiven in spite of the shame. When we are forgiven we don't have to be ashamed anymore, because God has taken the shame.

Genesis 1:26a & 27
And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness... So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.

God created man in his image. This isn't physical. God is a spiritual being, and he created us as a spiritual being giving us control over some things. Man was pure, holy, in agreement with God, and could interact as a spiritual being. When man sinned, it changed this. Man needs someone to bring him back to what God intended.

2 Corinthians 3:17-18
Now the Lord is that Spirit: and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty. But we all, with open face beholding as in a glass the glory of the Lord, are changed into the same image from glory to glory, even as by the Spirit of the Lord.

We see the glory of God and by the Spirit of God, the blood of Christ, we are changed from ungodly to godly. The thing between us and God must be removed, so that we can walk with God again. We must be changed so that we don't put things back between us and God. Adam and Eve, for some period of time, walked with God in the human body here on earth. When the sin is taken out of you, you can also walk with God here. Christ died so that we can be godly.

Titus 2:11-12
For the grace of God that bringeth salvation hath appeared to all men, Teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly, in this present world;

"... the grace of God that bringeth salvation [deliverance] hath appeared to all men..." Salvation delivers us from sin. There is a change. The unmerited favor of God that brings deliverance is there for everyone. It doesn't mean that everyone is already aware of it. People need to know that they can have it. This is why we talk about religion. We want people to know that there is help and deliverance from sin. While people live soberly, righteously, and godly in heaven, we can do this here and now. We can do this because of the unmerited favor of God that has set us free. He makes it possible; he gives us the strength to live a godly life. If you want to live this way, you will find that you need some help. Christ walked as a man among men in a sinful world, and yet did no sin. He established the possibility that we can do that, too. In ourselves, we can't do it, but by the power that God has supplied, we can. He has provided strength and deliverance. By his Spirit within, we can live a godly life. We want people to know what a change God can make. Because of the blood, "...there is therefore now no condemnation." This can be your testimony. Humble yourself, acknowledge your sin for what it is, and let the blood wash it away and save you from the wrath of God.
