Philippians 4:4

Rejoice in the Lord always: and again I say, Rejoice.

Paul gave them an admonition to “rejoice in the Lord.” When we think of God and his goodness, it brings joy to our hearts.  God is not overwhelmed by what is going on in the world.  We should be able to rejoice in the Lord and all he has done for us.  We need to rejoice always. (Eph. 2:6) Walking with God is a good way to go.

God’s people ought to be a happy people.  A Christian should be a cheerful person.  We shouldn’t have any Christian Eeyore’s.  We are the only ones who can live out “don’t worry, be happy.”  It’s good to rejoice in God.

Psalm 16:8-11

I have set the Lord always before me: because he is at my right hand, I shall not be moved. Therefore my heart is glad, and my glory rejoiceth: my flesh also shall rest in hope. For thou wilt not leave my soul in hell; neither wilt thou suffer thine Holy One to see corruption. Thou wilt shew me the path of life: in thy presence is fulness of joy; at thy right hand there are pleasures for evermore.

God should be the center of our lives and our focus should be on him.  If we aren’t careful God will be a sidenote in our lives.  We should think on him each day. “Thou wilt shew me the path of life… For thou wilt not leave my soul in hell…” Things won’t end at the grave. “…in thy presence is fullness of joy; at thy right hand there are pleasures for evermore.” When we have God with us, we should be a happy people.  Leave the worries with God.

Nehemiah 8:9-10

And Nehemiah, which is the Tirshatha, and Ezra the priest the scribe, and the Levites that taught the people, said unto all the people, This day is holy unto the Lord your God; mourn not, nor weep. For all the people wept, when they heard the words of the law. Then he said unto them, Go your way, eat the fat, and drink the sweet, and send portions unto them for whom nothing is prepared: for this day is holy unto our Lord: neither be ye sorry; for the joy of the Lord is your strength.

To be strong, have joy in the Lord.  Rejoice in God and his word.  It makes us strong.  The word of God comes plain and clear.  Where it shows us to change, change.  The Bible isn’t all doom and gloom.  God’s word should bring us joy of salvation, deliverance, grace, and what we need to meet our need.  There are blessings when we get to know God.  We should be an optimistic people.  God can work out our difficulties.  Our trials don’t have to get us down. “…for the joy of the Lord is your strength” Strength comes when we rejoice in God. Singing is part of rejoicing.  Get into it and let your heart sing.

Psalm 126:1-3, 5-6

When the Lord turned again the captivity of Zion, we were like them that dream. Then was our mouth filled with laughter, and our tongue with singing: then said they among the heathen, The Lord hath done great things for them. The Lord hath done great things for us; whereof we are glad.

They that sow in tears shall reap in joy.  He that goeth forth and weepeth, bearing precious seed, shall doubtless come again with rejoicing, bringing his sheaves with him.

When God set us free from sin, it opened up new possibilities. “Then was our mouth filled with laughter, and our tongue with singing: then said they among the heathen, The Lord hath done great things for them.” God gives us freedom to laugh and enjoy life.  Your rejoicing could cause others to say, “God sure is blessing you.” It pays to serve God.  We find life in God.  People should see the life of a Christian is a good way to live.  Rejoice that God answers prayer.  It is a way God lets our light shine.

Isaiah 61:9-11

And their seed shall be known among the Gentiles, and their offspring among the people: all that see them shall acknowledge them, that they are the seed which the Lord hath blessed. I will greatly rejoice in the Lord, my soul shall be joyful in my God; for he hath clothed me with the garments of salvation, he hath covered me with the robe of righteousness, as a bridegroom decketh himself with ornaments, and as a bride adorneth herself with her jewels. For as the earth bringeth forth her bud, and as the garden causeth the things that are sown in it to spring forth; so the Lord God will cause righteousness and praise to spring forth before all the nations.

“…that they are the seed which the Lord hath blessed” The world should be able to see that God has blessed us.  “I will greatly rejoice in the Lord, my soul shall be joyful in my God…” God has given us the robes of righteousness.  We wouldn’t have it without God giving it to us.  Clothing was an indication of wealth in their day.  Designer labels are our day’s equivalent.  Salvation is exclusive to God.  He has to give it to us.  It is available to everyone, but only through him.

“For as the earth bringeth forth her bud, and as the garden causeth the things that are sown in it to spring forth; so the Lord God will cause righteousness and praise to spring forth before all the nations.” There’s no such thing as a secret Christian.  Something within should bubble up to the outside.  People should see that we’re blessed.  So many people have poverty of spirit.  They need to get honest with God and get to be what he would have them to be.  It pays to serve Jesus in the blessings he brings to your life.

Isaiah 35:8-10

And an highway shall be there, and a way, and it shall be called The way of holiness; the unclean shall not pass over it; but it shall be for those: the wayfaring men, though fools, shall not err therein. No lion shall be there, nor any ravenous beast shall go up thereon, it shall not be found there; but the redeemed shall walk there: And the ransomed of the Lord shall return, and come to Zion with songs and everlasting joy upon their heads: they shall obtain joy and gladness, and sorrow and sighing shall flee away.

“The wilderness and the solitary place shall be glad for them; and the desert shall rejoice, and blossom as the rose. It shall blossom abundantly, and rejoice even with joy and singing.” Isaiah pronounced judgment for their rejection of God, but he also spends time comforting them by telling them what Christ would bring and that they would return.  Joy comes from God.  That is the only place it is found – by walking with God.

Rejoice in the Lord.  We are a blessed people.  The world should see and be drawn to that.  Be a singing people.  Sing to the glory of God.  Rejoice evermore.  Rejoice in both good and bad times.  Rejoice that God is walking through life with you.
