1 Corinthians 12:1-31
Now concerning spiritual gifts, brethren, I would not have you ignorant. Ye know that ye were Gentiles, carried away unto these dumb idols, even as ye were led. Wherefore I give you to understand, that no man speaking by the Spirit of God calleth Jesus accursed: and that no man can say that Jesus is the Lord, but by the Holy Ghost. Now there are diversities of gifts, but the same Spirit. And there are differences of administrations, but the same Lord. And there are diversities of operations, but it is the same God which worketh all in all. But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to every man to profit withal. For to one is given by the Spirit the word of wisdom; to another the word of knowledge by the same Spirit; To another faith by the same Spirit; to another the gifts of healing by the same Spirit; To another the working of miracles; to another prophecy; to another discerning of spirits; to another divers kinds of tongues; to another the interpretation of tongues: But all these worketh that one and the selfsame Spirit, dividing to every man severally as he will. For as the body is one, and hath many members, and all the members of that one body, being many, are one body: so also is Christ. For by one Spirit are we all baptized into one body, whether we be Jews or Gentiles, whether we be bond or free; and have been all made to drink into one Spirit. For the body is not one member, but many. If the foot shall say, Because I am not the hand, I am not of the body; is it therefore not of the body? And if the ear shall say, Because I am not the eye, I am not of the body; is it therefore not of the body? If the whole body were an eye, where were the hearing? If the whole were hearing, where were the smelling? But now hath God set the members every one of them in the body, as it hath pleased him. And if they were all one member, where were the body? But now are they many members, yet but one body. And the eye cannot say unto the hand, I have no need of thee: nor again the head to the feet, I have no need of you. Nay, much more those members of the body, which seem to be more feeble, are necessary: And those members of the body, which we think to be less honourable, upon these we bestow more abundant honour; and our uncomely parts have more abundant comeliness. For our comely parts have no need: but God hath tempered the body together, having given more abundant honour to that part which lacked. That there should be no schism in the body; but that the members should have the same care one for another. And whether one member suffer, all the members suffer with it; or one member be honoured, all the members rejoice with it. Now ye are the body of Christ, and members in particular. And God hath set some in the church, first apostles, secondarily prophets, thirdly teachers, after that miracles, then gifts of healings, helps, governments, diversities of tongues. Are all apostles? are all prophets? are all teachers? are all workers of miracles? Have all the gifts of healing? do all speak with tongues? do all interpret? But covet earnestly the best gifts: and yet shew I unto you a more excellent way.
We still need a personal relationship with God. If we know Jesus it is because God has spoken to us.
God works in various ways. He used patriarchs, judges, kings, etc. in the Old Testament. Now he works through the gospel. (Heb. 1:1-2) There are diversity of ministries but one Lord. There are different ways to work, but one goal. Ministry = service. God has a way for you to serve. He has work for us to do. It’s God’s operation. God gave his Spirit to his children. This is where we get what we need to serve. The Spirit should work in you to minister to those around you. It goes beyond your natural abilities. The Spirit is given to make us profitable. We’re here to be useful to God’s operation.
Knowledge – God helps you know what you need to know to do the work of God. Wisdom – God helps us know what we need to do to get the work done. It’s beyond knowledge, but works with it. God’s gifts go beyond natural ability. God can provide the ability to communicate when we need to talk to each other. (At the Tower of Babel, he gave different languages to create a barrier; at Pentecost, he opened up communication to spread the gospel.) God gives capabilities to have men minister to others by the Spirit. It all comes from the same Spirit for the same purpose.
My walk with God won’t be identical to yours. We all need the Spirit working in us to make us able to minister as part of the body of Christ.
There is one body. We are a part of it and have a part to play in it. We need to achieve our part. There is no part that has no useful function. We don’t want to be a source of trouble. We need to contribute to the ministry in some way. God wants his light to shine to all mankind and somewhere in there is our place. The Spirit will make us interdependent and draw us together as we allow him to work. Unity is weakened when people don’t do what God asks them to do.
We all need to participate. Unity of the Spirit works when the Spirit works in each one. There are many kinds of gifts; don’t expect to have them all. Desire to have what you need to make you effective in the work of God.
And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers; For the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ: Till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ: That we henceforth be no more children, tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men, and cunning craftiness, whereby they lie in wait to deceive; But speaking the truth in love, may grow up into him in all things, which is the head, even Christ: From whom the whole body fitly joined together and compacted by that which every joint supplieth, according to the effectual working in the measure of every part, maketh increase of the body unto the edifying of itself in love.
These are given to work in the body to help us become spiritual adults who are stable. The head is God’s part. Be your part. That’s how the body is united. The Spirit causes the body to be untied. We can be built up when the Spirit is working in us. Do your part by the working of the Spirit of God. The body is increased when it edifies itself in love. A body can exist without some pieces, but it is limited.
1 Corinthians 13:1-10
Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, and have not charity, I am become as sounding brass, or a tinkling cymbal. And though I have the gift of prophecy, and understand all mysteries, and all knowledge; and though I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, and have not charity, I am nothing. And though I bestow all my goods to feed the poor, and though I give my body to be burned, and have not charity, it profiteth me nothing. Charity suffereth long, and is kind; charity envieth not; charity vaunteth not itself, is not puffed up, Doth not behave itself unseemly, seeketh not her own, is not easily provoked, thinketh no evil; Rejoiceth not in iniquity, but rejoiceth in the truth; Beareth all things, believeth all things, hopeth all things, endureth all things. Charity never faileth: but whether there be prophecies, they shall fail; whether there be tongues, they shall cease; whether there be knowledge, it shall vanish away. For we know in part, and we prophesy in part. But when that which is perfect is come, then that which is in part shall be done away.
Capability by the Spirit is not enough. We need love. The capabilities without the fruit is insufficient. The gifts should be used at the prompting of the fruit. We need the fruit of the Spirit. We all should have all the fruit. The fruit makes us like Christ. There is no useless part in the body that is just a source of trouble.
