Psalm 73:1-17

Truly God is good to Israel, even to such as are of a clean heart.  But as for me, my feet were almost gone; my steps had well nigh slipped.  For I was envious at the foolish, when I saw the prosperity of the wicked.  For there are no bands in their death: but their strength is firm.  They are not in trouble as other men; neither are they plagued like other men.  Therefore pride compasseth them about as a chain; violence covereth them as a garment.  Their eyes stand out with fatness: they have more than heart could wish.  They are corrupt, and speak wickedly concerning oppression: they speak loftily.  They set their mouth against the heavens, and their tongue walketh through the earth.  Therefore his people return hither: and waters of a full cup are wrung out to them.  And they say, How doth God know? and is there knowledge in the most High?  Behold, these are the ungodly, who prosper in the world; they increase in riches.  Verily I have cleansed my heart in vain, and washed my hands in innocency.  For all the day long have I been plagued, and chastened every morning.  If I say, I will speak thus; behold, I should offend against the generation of thy children.  When I thought to know this, it was too painful for me;  Until I went into the sanctuary of God; then understood I their end.

“Truly God is good to Israel, even to such as are of a clean heart.” He goes on to recount how things are in the world and how it seems the wicked are prospering.  The devil would like us to think the way of the world is the best way.  It is good to choose the way that is right. “When I thought to know this, it was too painful for me; until I went into the sanctuary of God; then understood I their end.” We can see the devil’s picture until we get our eyes on God and see the distortion of the devil’s picture.  Consider the end of those of the world. “Truly God is good to Israel, even to such as are of a clean heart.” God lets good things come to both the good and bad.  It pays to walk with God.

Jeremiah 22:13-17

Woe unto him that buildeth his house by unrighteousness, and his chambers by wrong; that useth his neighbour's service without wages, and giveth him not for his work;  That saith, I will build me a wide house and large chambers, and cutteth him out windows; and it is cieled with cedar, and painted with vermilion.  Shalt thou reign, because thou closest thyself in cedar? did not thy father eat and drink, and do judgment and justice, and then it was well with him?  He judged the cause of the poor and needy; then it was well with him: was not this to know me? saith the Lord.  But thine eyes and thine heart are not but for thy covetousness, and for to shed innocent blood, and for oppression, and for violence, to do it.

This king was going the way of unrighteousness.  Self-gratification doesn’t turn out good.  We are in a world of violence where people will do whatever they can to get whatever they want.  Just because you’re king doesn’t mean you’ll prosper.  The prophet reminded the king that the king’s father handled things differently and prospered.  Nations and people suffer when they leave God’s way to go the way of violence.  We can go God’s way and things will be well with us.

Proverbs 10:6-11

Blessings are upon the head of the just: but violence covereth the mouth of the wicked. The memory of the just is blessed: but the name of the wicked shall rot. The wise in heart will receive commandments: but a prating fool shall fall. He that walketh uprightly walketh surely: but he that perverteth his ways shall be known. He that winketh with the eye causeth sorrow: but a prating fool shall fall.  The mouth of a righteous man is a well of life: but violence covereth the mouth of the wicked.

If you treat people right, God will bless you in it. “The mouth of a righteous man is a well of life: but violence covereth the mouth of the wicked.” Which is you – a well of life, or a fountain of violence? As much harm can be done with the tongue as with the fists.

“He that walketh uprightly walketh surely: but he that perverteth his ways shall be known.” If you walk God’s way, it is a sure path.  There’s much wickedness and violence in the world.  God sent Jesus to do something about it.

Isaiah 53:6-12

All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and the Lord hath laid on him the iniquity of us all.  He was oppressed, and he was afflicted, yet he opened not his mouth: he is brought as a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before her shearers is dumb, so he openeth not his mouth.  He was taken from prison and from judgment: and who shall declare his generation? for he was cut off out of the land of the living: for the transgression of my people was he stricken.  And he made his grave with the wicked, and with the rich in his death; because he had done no violence, neither was any deceit in his mouth.  Yet it pleased the Lord to bruise him; he hath put him to grief: when thou shalt make his soul an offering for sin, he shall see his seed, he shall prolong his days, and the pleasure of the Lord shall prosper in his hand.  He shall see of the travail of his soul, and shall be satisfied: by his knowledge shall my righteous servant justify many; for he shall bear their iniquities.  Therefore will I divide him a portion with the great, and he shall divide the spoil with the strong; because he hath poured out his soul unto death: and he was numbered with the transgressors; and he bare the sin of many, and made intercession for the transgressors.

This is prophecy about Jesus.  It talks of all he went through. “…because he had done no violence, neither was any deceit in his mouth. Yet it pleased the Lord to bruise him…” Jesus endured all this so we could be saved.  He didn’t have material things, but he prospered in what he came to do: save souls.  When we walk with God and are pleasing to him, things will turn out okay.  Jesus came to endure violence to save us.  God came so we can find peace and walk with kindness, care and concern for each other.

Jeremiah 33:6-9

Behold, I will bring it health and cure, and I will cure them, and will reveal unto them the abundance of peace and truth.  And I will cause the captivity of Judah and the captivity of Israel to return, and will build them, as at the first.  And I will cleanse them from all their iniquity, whereby they have sinned against me; and I will pardon all their iniquities, whereby they have sinned, and whereby they have transgressed against me.  And it shall be to me a name of joy, a praise and an honour before all the nations of the earth, which shall hear all the good that I do unto them: and they shall fear and tremble for all the goodness and for all the prosperity that I procure unto it.

He let them know they could fight with Babylon but they were still going there because God said so.  After 70 years, God would move on their behalf.  “Behold, I will bring it health and cure, and I will cure them, and will reveal unto them the abundance of peace and truth.” There is abundance in peace.  Prosperity is found in the peace of God. “And I will cause the captivity of Judah and the captivity of Israel to return, and will build them, as at the first.  And I will cleanse them from all their iniquity, whereby they have sinned against me; and I will pardon all their iniquities, whereby they have sinned, and whereby they have transgressed against me. And it shall be to me a name of joy, a praise and an honour before all the nations of the hearth, which shall hear all the good that I do unto them: and they shall fear and tremble for all the goodness and for all the prosperity that I procure unto it.” When we find the peace and abundance in God, there is a good life in Jesus.  God has provided enough to share with others.

When you choose the path of peace and truth there is abundance to be found.  You can have a good life if you’ll go this way.  God wants us to have a life of peace that brings praise and honor to his name.

Romans 14:16-19

Let not then your good be evil spoken of:  For the kingdom of God is not meat and drink; but righteousness, and peace, and joy in the Holy Ghost.  For he that in these things serveth Christ is acceptable to God, and approved of men.  Let us therefore follow after the things which make for peace, and things wherewith one may edify another.

“For the kingdom of God is not meat and drink; but righteousness, and peace, and joy in the Holy Ghost.” This is what we want people to see.  Lots of folks are without joy.  We can still find joy in the Holy Ghost.  When we walk with God, things will turn out alright.  “For he that in these things serveth Christ is acceptable to God, and approved of men. Let us therefore follow after the things which make for peace, and things wherewith one may edify another.” This is how to have a blessed life.  When we walk this way, we try to build others up, not tear them down.  Find real happiness in God.

Romans 15:12-13

And again, Esaias saith, There shall be a root of Jesse, and he that shall rise to reign over the Gentiles; in him shall the Gentiles trust.  Now the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, that ye may abound in hope, through the power of the Holy Ghost.

The root of Jesse is Jesus.  Jesus rules over us and we’re glad.  Joy and peace are found in believing in God.  The devil would try to get us down.  There are many good things to be found in God.  God can give us peace, hope and joy in the Spirit of God.  We can have a more abundant life.
