Keeping the Seed Sown in You

Luke 8:4-15

And when much people were gathered together, and were come to him out of every city, he spake by a parable: A sower went out to sow his seed: and as he sowed, some fell by the way side; and it was trodden down, and the fowls of the air devoured it. And some fell upon a rock; and as soon as it was sprung up, it withered away, because it lacked moisture. And some fell among thorns; and the thorns sprang up with it, and choked it. And other fell on good ground, and sprang up, and bare fruit an hundredfold. And when he had said these things, he cried, He that hath ears to hear, let him hear. And his disciples asked him, saying, What might this parable be? And he said, Unto you it is given to know the mysteries of the kingdom of God: but to others in parables; that seeing they might not see, and hearing they might not understand. Now the parable is this: The seed is the word of God. Those by the way side are they that hear; then cometh the devil, and taketh away the word out of their hearts, lest they should believe and be saved. They on the rock are they, which, when they hear, receive the word with joy; and these have no root, which for a while believe, and in time of temptation fall away. And that which fell among thorns are they, which, when they have heard, go forth, and are choked with cares and riches and pleasures of this life, and bring no fruit to perfection. But that on the good ground are they, which in an honest and good heart, having heard the word, keep it, and bring forth fruit with patience.

Jesus used the common things of life to instruct us in this life.  The seed gets put into various kinds of ground.  There are different things that could stop the word from bringing from fruit in us.

The seed on the wayside ground didn’t produce anything.  The birds came and ate it.  The devil comes and takes the word out of peoples’ hearts.  When God’s word comes to us, we need to take it into our hearts because the devil would work to take it away.  On the good ground, they hear and keep the word.

We need the desire to act on what God shows us.  Listen to hear what’s good for you.  Seek God to show you how to live.  Read to receive instruction for life from God.

James 1:20-25

For the wrath of man worketh not the righteousness of God. Wherefore lay apart all filthiness and superfluity of naughtiness, and receive with meekness the engrafted word, which is able to save your souls. But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves. For if any be a hearer of the word, and not a doer, he is like unto a man beholding his natural face in a glass: For he beholdeth himself, and goeth his way, and straightway forgetteth what manner of man he was. But whoso looketh into the perfect law of liberty, and continueth therein, he being not a forgetful hearer, but a doer of the work, this man shall be blessed in his deed.

There is a right way to live. “For the wrath of man worketh not the righteousness of God. Wherefore lay apart all filthiness and superfluity of naughtiness, and receive with meekness the engrafted word, which is able to save your souls.” The rules and dictates of man aren’t the answer.  Things that are unacceptable to God need to be set aside.  It isn’t just hearing it; we need to put it in action.  Lots of people go to church and hear preaching, but the world is still a mess.  Preaching is ineffective if people don’t have the heart to do what they hear.

“But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves. For if any be a hearer of the word, and not a doer, he is like unto a man beholding his natural face in a glass: For he beholdeth himself, and goeth his way, and straightway forgetteth what manner of man he was.” Until we have a heart to act on what we hear, we won’t progress.  We have to do what God shows us.

The word of God will show us ourselves and it may not be pretty.  A mirror is used to help us see ourselves and make ourselves presentable.  It helps us see what we need to act on.  The word of God helps us see ourselves spiritually.  If we don’t act on it, we’re just wayside ground.  The word will produce fruit in us if we act on it.

“But whoso looketh into the perfect law of liberty, and continueth therein, he being not a forgetful hearer, but a doer of the work, this man shall be blessed in his deed.” We look into it with the intention to do what it says to do.  Act on what God speaks to you.  It’s easy for the devil to take it away if we don’t act on what we hear.

Acts 9:1-6

And Saul, yet breathing out threatenings and slaughter against the disciples of the Lord, went unto the high priest, And desired of him letters to Damascus to the synagogues, that if he found any of this way, whether they were men or women, he might bring them bound unto Jerusalem. And as he journeyed, he came near Damascus: and suddenly there shined round about him a light from heaven: And he fell to the earth, and heard a voice saying unto him, Saul, Saul, why persecutest thou me? And he said, Who art thou, Lord? And the Lord said, I am Jesus whom thou persecutest: it is hard for thee to kick against the pricks. And he trembling and astonished said, Lord, what wilt thou have me to do? And the Lord said unto him, Arise, and go into the city, and it shall be told thee what thou must do.

This is how it was with Paul when God spoke to him.  God sometimes speaks to hearts plainly through his Holy Spirit.

“And he trembling and astonished said, Lord, what wilt thou have me to do? And the Lord said unto him, Arise, and go into the city, and it shall be told thee what thou must do.” God’s direction may come indirectly.  Take heed and hear.  Paul took note when God spoke.  Stop and let God talk to you.  Ask God what he would have you to do.

Paul shared this testimony with many people.  He obeyed when God spoke.  When God tells us what to do, it’s time to do it.   God wants to see action.

Matthew 7:21-27

Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven. Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works? And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity. Therefore whosoever heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them, I will liken him unto a wise man, which built his house upon a rock: And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell not: for it was founded upon a rock. And every one that heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them not, shall be likened unto a foolish man, which built his house upon the sand: And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell: and great was the fall of it.

If you would be part of God’s church, you must do the will of the Father.  We could do some works, but if they aren’t what God wants, we’re still going to miss it.  We have to do the will of the Father.  All we do has to be in tune with what God wants.  Focus on what god wants.

“Therefore whosoever heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them, I will liken him unto a wise man, which built his house upon a rock:” Digging deep isn’t always easy.  To build on the rock may demand hard things of you.  We need God’s strength to stand in the difficult places of life.  If we don’t hear and do what God shows us, we’re going to go with the tide.  Act when God speaks to you. Troubles will still come.  Hear to do and by doing so, you’ll weather the troubles.

John 14:22-26

Judas saith unto him, not Iscariot, Lord, how is it that thou wilt manifest thyself unto us, and not unto the world? Jesus answered and said unto him, If a man love me, he will keep my words: and my Father will love him, and we will come unto him, and make our abode with him. He that loveth me not keepeth not my sayings: and the word which ye hear is not mine, but the Father's which sent me. These things have I spoken unto you, being yet present with you. But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.

“Judas saith unto him, not Iscariot, Lord, how is it that thou wilt manifest thyself unto us, and not unto the world? “ Jesus will come and abide with us. “23Jesus answered and said unto him, If a man love me, he will keep my words: and my Father will love him, and we will come unto him, and make our abode with him.”  If you love God, you will act on what he speaks to you.  God will dwell in you and make it possible for you to do.  Our love for God is shown by what we do after we hear.

The Spirit of God will teach us if we love God and have the heart to do.  This will make us good ground.  The Spirit of God will help us remember, and will help us to do what we need to do.  God speaks so that we can act on what he says.  If we obey, he will abide.
