Purified Hearts

Matthew 5:8

Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God.

People want to know God and see him.  Philip wanted to see God.  Jesus tells us how to see God: be pure in heart.  We can know God and walk with him in this life. “Whosoever abideth in him sinneth not: whosoever sinneth hath not seen him, neither known him.” 1 John 3:6. When we don’t have a pure heart, we don’t know God.  God can give us a pure heart, so we can know God.  Our hearts are made pure by the blood of Christ.  God can change our hearts and make us different.

Acts 15:7-11

And when there had been much disputing, Peter rose up, and said unto them, Men and brethren, ye know how that a good while ago God made choice among us, that the Gentiles by my mouth should hear the word of the gospel, and believe. And God, which knoweth the hearts, bare them witness, giving them the Holy Ghost, even as he did unto us; And put no difference between us and them, purifying their hearts by faith. Now therefore why tempt ye God, to put a yoke upon the neck of the disciples, which neither our fathers nor we were able to bear? But we believe that through the grace of the LORD Jesus Christ we shall be saved, even as they.

They were having a discussion about whether the Gentiles had to keep the law of Moses. “And when there had been much disputing, Peter rose up, and said unto them, Men and brethren, ye know how that a good while ago God made choice among us, that the Gentiles by my mouth should hear the word of the gospel, and believe. And God, which knoweth the hearts, bare them witness, giving them the Holy Ghost, even as he did unto us; And put no difference between us and them, purifying their hearts by faith.” Peter said God had purified their hearts.  Hearts can be purified.  By Jesus, all hearts are washed and made pure.  We receive the work he can do, by faith.  Purify your hearts by believing in Christ and what he’s done for us.

Mark 7:20-23

And he said, That which cometh out of the man, that defileth the man. For from within, out of the heart of men, proceed evil thoughts, adulteries, fornications, murders, Thefts, covetousness, wickedness, deceit, lasciviousness, an evil eye, blasphemy, pride, foolishness: All these evil things come from within, and defile the man.

This is what needs to be purified.  What needs to be addressed is that within man that produces all these things.  It is a spiritual issue.  The heart needs to be purified so the man won’t be defiled.  Sin comes from a defiled heart.  Jesus came so that we can be purified.  If all these things are there, how can God’s Holy Spirit abide there?  We can’t purify ourselves, but God can do the work.

1 Corinthians 6:9-11

Know ye not that the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God? Be not deceived: neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor abusers of themselves with mankind, Nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners, shall inherit the kingdom of God. And such were some of you: but ye are washed, but ye are sanctified, but ye are justified in the name of the Lord Jesus, and by the Spirit of our God.

Some things won’t inherit the kingdom of God.  It is the same stuff as from Mark. “And such were some of you…” A change happened.  This is the case of humanity without God. “…but ye are washed, but ye are sanctified, but ye are justified in the name of the Lord Jesus, and by the Spirit of our God.” Something took place.  When we are purified and God comes into our lives, he should be seen in our lives.  We can know God and have a good relationship with him.  By him, our hearts are purified and we’re able to see God.

Before Adam sinned, he walked with God.  When he sinned, he couldn’t walk with God anymore.  Jesus came and made a way for us to enjoy the presence of God again.

Hebrews 10:14-22

For by one offering he hath perfected for ever them that are sanctified. Whereof the Holy Ghost also is a witness to us: for after that he had said before, This is the covenant that I will make with them after those days, saith the Lord, I will put my laws into their hearts, and in their minds will I write them; And their sins and iniquities will I remember no more. Now where remission of these is, there is no more offering for sin. Having therefore, brethren, boldness to enter into the holiest by the blood of Jesus, By a new and living way, which he hath consecrated for us, through the veil, that is to say, his flesh; And having an high priest over the house of God; Let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience, and our bodies washed with pure water.

He describes what we have found through Christ.  We can be reconciled to God. “This is the covenant that I will make with them after those days, saith the Lord, I will put my laws into their hearts, and in their minds will I write them.” Consider the contrast between this and what we read in Mark.  The law of God can be in us and we can walk with God.  God can abide in us. “This is the way, walk ye in it.” Isaiah 30:21.  God will wash away our iniquities and not remember them anymore. “Having therefore, brethren, boldness to enter into the holiest by the blood of Jesus…” Jesus is the way for us. “…by a new and living way, which he hath consecrated for us, through the veil, that is to say, his flesh;” He made a way for us into the presence of God. “And having an high priest over the house of God; let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience, an dour bodies washed with pure water.” If we stay near God, our hearts can stay pure, even when the devil would tempt us.  The sinful things don’t have to dwell in your heart anymore.  The abiding place of God is found through Jesus.  God can dwell in you when your heart is cleansed by the blood of Jesus.

If you don’t know him, draw near and believe he can cleanse you.  If you’ll come, he will purify your heart and you can walk with him.
