And the word of the LORD came unto Jonah the second time, saying, Arise, go unto Nineveh, that great city, and preach unto it the preaching that I bid thee. So Jonah arose, and went unto Nineveh, according to the word of the LORD. Now Nineveh was an exceeding great city of three days' journey. And Jonah began to enter into the city a day's journey, and he cried, and said, Yet forty days, and Nineveh shall be overthrown. So the people of Nineveh believed God, and proclaimed a fast, and put on sackcloth, from the greatest of them even to the least of them. For word came unto the king of Nineveh, and he arose from his throne, and he laid his robe from him, and covered him with sackcloth, and sat in ashes. And he caused it to be proclaimed and published through Nineveh by the decree of the king and his nobles, saying, Let neither man nor beast, herd nor flock, taste any thing: let them not feed, nor drink water: But let man and beast be covered with sackcloth, and cry mightily unto God: yea, let them turn every one from his evil way, and from the violence that is in their hands. Who can tell if God will turn and repent, and turn away from his fierce anger, that we perish not? And God saw their works, that they turned from their evil way; and God repented of the evil, that he had said that he would do unto them; and he did it not.
This was the great point of Jonah’s life. It was the message God gave to Nineveh. He went and preached it. It was short and plain: "…Yet forty days, and Nineveh shall be overthrown." The people listened and did something about it. How would you respond if Jonah came to town today?
There have been a lot of people come that weren’t sent by God. They sound a false warning. People begin to disregard that warning as always false. A warning can be sounded and people need to take heed. When Jonah finally proclaimed the message, people believed God. "So the people of Nineveh believed God, and proclaimed a fast, and put on sackcloth, from the greatest of them even to the least of them. For word came unto the king of Nineveh, and he arose from his throne, and he laid his robe from him, and covered him with sackcloth, and sat in ashes. And he caused it to be proclaimed and published through Nineveh by the decree of the king and his nobles, saying, Let neither man nor beast, herd nor flock, taste any thing: let them not feed, nor drink water." "For the word came unto the king of Nineveh…" The king didn’t hear Jonah himself, but he got the message. They took action immediately.
What would you do if Jonah came to our town? Would you take heed to the message? They believed God had spoken and repented and turned to God. How would you respond to such preaching?
Just because many false prophets come proclaiming the end and are wrong doesn’t mean there are no true prophets or that the end won’t come. We don’t know how long we have. We need to listen when God speaks to us.
Then certain of the scribes and of the Pharisees answered, saying, Master, we would see a sign from thee. But he answered and said unto them, An evil and adulterous generation seeketh after a sign; and there shall no sign be given to it, but the sign of the prophet Jonas: For as Jonas was three days and three nights in the whale's belly; so shall the Son of man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth. The men of Nineveh shall rise in judgment with this generation, and shall condemn it: because they repented at the preaching of Jonas; and, behold, a greater than Jonas is here.
These wanted a sign. The people of Nineveh didn’t ask for a sign. Jonah didn’t have to convince the Ninevites. Jesus told them the only sign they would get was his death and resurrection. Only Jesus could lay his life down and take it up again. The people of Nineveh responded to Jonah. They would rise in judgment against those that don’t believe. The king listened to the message even though he never saw Jonah. A greater than Jonah is here. He’s told us he’s coming back and we better be ready. How long doesn’t matter. Disaster is ahead. We better be ready.
If you continue in your sins, you won’t be ready. Unless you repent, you, too, will perish. We must take heed to the words of Jesus. The end lies ahead.
The people of Nineveh listened. What are people doing today? They run around seeking pleasure. We need to take heed to Christ.
Watch therefore: for ye know not what hour your Lord doth come. But know this, that if the goodman of the house had known in what watch the thief would come, he would have watched, and would not have suffered his house to be broken up. Therefore be ye also ready: for in such an hour as ye think not the Son of man cometh.
No one knows the hour when Jesus will come. We need to listen to the message that our end is coming and act on it today. It doesn’t matter when that end will come. Are you ready today? He’s coming. That’s all you need to know. You don’t have to know the hour, if you watch. "But know this, that if the Goodman of the house had known in what watch the thief would come, he would have watched, and would not have suffered his house to be broken up." Jesus will come back someday. Be ready.
Listen to the message of Jesus. Prepare and be ready. Believe God and what he says. Get ready. Take heed to the prophecy. It’s coming. Get ready to meet God.
For Christ is not entered into the holy places made with hands, which are the figures of the true; but into heaven itself, now to appear in the presence of God for us: Nor yet that he should offer himself often, as the high priest entereth into the holy place every year with blood of others; For then must he often have suffered since the foundation of the world: but now once in the end of the world hath he appeared to put away sin by the sacrifice of himself. And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment: So Christ was once offered to bear the sins of many; and unto them that look for him shall he appear the second time without sin unto salvation.
Jesus entered into heaven into the presence of God himself. He died once for our sins. Whether he comes or whether we die, either way, we will face God. You better be ready. Don’t put it off until "someday." Deal with it now. You have an appointment with death if Christ doesn’t come first. We don’t know when it is. Get salvation now.
2 Peter 3:1-10
This second epistle, beloved, I now write unto you; in both which I stir up your pure minds by way of remembrance: That ye may be mindful of the words which were spoken before by the holy prophets, and of the commandment of us the apostles of the Lord and Saviour: Knowing this first, that there shall come in the last days scoffers, walking after their own lusts, And saying, Where is the promise of his coming? for since the fathers fell asleep, all things continue as they were from the beginning of the creation. For this they willingly are ignorant of, that by the word of God the heavens were of old, and the earth standing out of the water and in the water: Whereby the world that then was, being overflowed with water, perished: But the heavens and the earth, which are now, by the same word are kept in store, reserved unto fire against the day of judgment and perdition of ungodly men. But, beloved, be not ignorant of this one thing, that one day is with the Lord as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day. The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance. But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night; in the which the heavens shall pass away with a great noise, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat, the earth also and the works that are therein shall be burned up.
This is the message: The day of the Lord will come. God allows the world to continue, but the judgment day is coming. "The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance." God’s mercy has been extended often to mankind, but that day will come. Be ready now.
How would you respond if Jonah came to your town? Seek God now. Be ready when he comes.
