The Awfulness of UnbeliefBro. David Chancellor

Nevertheless I tell you the truth; It is expedient for you that I go away: for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I depart, I will send him unto you. And when he is come, he will reprove the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment: Of sin, because they believe not on me;
"And when he is come, he will reprove the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment: Of sin, because they believe not on me;" The Spirit of God will reprove the world of sin because of their unbelief. Sin is wicked, evil and bad, but this focuses on unbelief. Consider the awfulness of unbelief. God provided an answer for sin, but people aren’t availing themselves of it. If you have not put your faith in Jesus to deliver you of sin, your heart is more wicked than you might think. If you are going on in sin, it is because you haven’t put your faith in Christ. The Spirit of God is sent to deliver us from sin.
For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved. He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God. And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil. For every one that doeth evil hateth the light, neither cometh to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved. But he that doeth truth cometh to the light, that his deeds may be made manifest, that they are wrought in God.
God didn’t send Jesus to condemn the world, but to save it. People need to see a Savior that can deliver from the power of sin. The way to freedom from sin is to put your faith in Jesus. When we don’t believe God, we say he’s a liar. People who won’t believe reject God. Of our own power, we can’t change, but through Christ we can live and walk as he would have us to walk. People come to the light so that God can get the credit.
Wherefore (as the Holy Ghost saith, To day if ye will hear his voice, Harden not your hearts, as in the provocation, in the day of temptation in the wilderness: When your fathers tempted me, proved me, and saw my works forty years. Wherefore I was grieved with that generation, and said, They do alway err in their heart; and they have not known my ways. So I sware in my wrath, They shall not enter into my rest.)
This shows how God feels about unbelief. The Israelites chose not to put their faith in God and in so doing they provoked him. They had already seen the works of God. For the next 40 years, they saw over and over what they had rejected.
There is nothing more wonderful than salvation. It is sad when people reject this. If we choose not to believe in Jesus, we won’t have rest either. Put your faith in Jesus. He has the answer for your needs.
And they went and came to Moses, and to Aaron, and to all the congregation of the children of Israel, unto the wilderness of Paran, to Kadesh; and brought back word unto them, and unto all the congregation, and shewed them the fruit of the land. And they told him, and said, We came unto the land whither thou sentest us, and surely it floweth with milk and honey; and this is the fruit of it. Nevertheless the people be strong that dwell in the land, and the cities are walled, and very great: and moreover we saw the children of Anak there. The Amalekites dwell in the land of the south: and the Hittites, and the Jebusites, and the Amorites, dwell in the mountains: and the Canaanites dwell by the sea, and by the coast of Jordan. And Caleb stilled the people before Moses, and said, Let us go up at once, and possess it; for we are well able to overcome it. But the men that went up with him said, We be not able to go up against the people; for they are stronger than we. And they brought up an evil report of the land which they had searched unto the children of Israel, saying, The land, through which we have gone to search it, is a land that eateth up the inhabitants thereof; and all the people that we saw in it are men of a great stature. And there we saw the giants, the sons of Anak, which come of the giants: and we were in our own sight as grasshoppers, and so we were in their sight.
They went and looked, and reported, "It’s just like God said it was." Caleb believed they could take the land. The others were afraid. It was a wonderful land with challenges. The people had to choose which report to believe. They should have listened to Caleb. God had already delivered them from Egypt, and without a single weapon being used. God had already handled every problem they faced. God promised to go before them and defeat all their enemies.
The devil would emphasize the challenges. God would have you see the blessings. Two voices speak to you; which will you believe?
Numbers 14:1-4, 11-12
And all the congregation lifted up their voice, and cried; and the people wept that night. And all the children of Israel murmured against Moses and against Aaron: and the whole congregation said unto them, Would God that we had died in the land of Egypt! or would God we had died in this wilderness! And wherefore hath the LORD brought us unto this land, to fall by the sword, that our wives and our children should be a prey? were it not better for us to return into Egypt? And they said one to another, Let us make a captain, and let us return into Egypt.
And the LORD said unto Moses, How long will this people provoke me? and how long will it be ere they believe me, for all the signs which I have shewed among them? I will smite them with the pestilence, and disinherit them, and will make of thee a greater nation and mightier than they.
This provoked God. They rejected God’s blessing because they thought the challenges were too hard. Moses pled with God to spare them. God spent 40 years showing them his power. Some never received the blessing because they didn’t believe God.
Take God at his word. Unbelief steals the blessing from you and will cause you to spend an eternity away from God. Unbelief is a wicked and terrible thing. God is true.
Then said Jesus again unto them, I go my way, and ye shall seek me, and shall die in your sins: whither I go, ye cannot come. Then said the Jews, Will he kill himself? because he saith, Whither I go, ye cannot come. And he said unto them, Ye are from beneath; I am from above: ye are of this world; I am not of this world. I said therefore unto you, that ye shall die in your sins: for if ye believe not that I am he, ye shall die in your sins.
The only way to get to heaven is to believe on Christ. If you don’t believe that Jesus is the Christ, you will die in your sins. The Jews are still seeking for the Christ because they rejected Jesus. They didn’t believe him when he came. To be saved, Jews must believe Jesus is the Christ. Anyone who doesn’t put their faith in Jesus will die in their sins. They can’t be where Jesus is. Unbelief determines where you end up. If we haven’t put faith in Jesus, we need to do so. Don’t wait and miss out on the blessings of God.
