Then tidings of these things came unto the ears of the church which was at Jerusalem: and they sent forth Barnabas, that he should go as far as Antioch. Who, when he came, and had seen the grace of God, was glad, and exhorted them all, that with purpose of heart they would cleave unto the Lord. For he was a good man, and full of the Holy Ghost and of faith: and much people was added unto the Lord.
"For he was a good man, and full of the Holy Ghost and of faith: and much people was added unto the Lord." This is a description of Barnabas. He was a Levite from Cyprus, and was originally named Joses.
Some weren’t glad about the Gentiles finding God, but Barnabas was, and he encouraged them. Whenever we encounter someone who is trying to serve God, we want to encourage them that way. We want people to stay with God.
"For he was a good man, and full of the Holy Ghost and of faith: and much people was added unto the Lord." Why can’t this be a description of you? This should be normal in God’s church. This is there for everyone. Everyone that seeks God can have this experience.
He that cometh from above is above all: he that is of the earth is earthly, and speaketh of the earth: he that cometh from heaven is above all. And what he hath seen and heard, that he testifieth; and no man receiveth his testimony. He that hath received his testimony hath set to his seal that God is true. For he whom God hath sent speaketh the words of God: for God giveth not the Spirit by measure unto him. The Father loveth the Son, and hath given all things into his hand.
This describes Jesus and what John the Baptist had observed about him. Jesus was sent to us to manifest God. When we believe Jesus, we are saying that God is true. Jesus had the fullness of the Spirit of God in him. He is our example. He is what we want to be like. Jesus is above all. He is what we should desire in our hearts to be.
And he is before all things, and by him all things consist. And he is the head of the body, the church: who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead; that in all things he might have the preeminence. For it pleased the Father that in him should all fulness dwell; And, having made peace through the blood of his cross, by him to reconcile all things unto himself; by him, I say, whether they be things in earth, or things in heaven.
God was pleased that Jesus would have the fullness of the Spirit of God. Our desire should be to be like Jesus. That fullness is what God is pleased with. God wants us to be full of the Holy Ghost.
On the next day much people that were come to the feast, when they heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem, Took branches of palm trees, and went forth to meet him, and cried, Hosanna: Blessed is the King of Israel that cometh in the name of the Lord. And Jesus, when he had found a young ass, sat thereon; as it is written, Fear not, daughter of Sion; behold, thy King cometh, sitting on an ass’s colt. These things understood not his disciples at the first: but when Jesus was glorified, then remembered they that these things were written of him, and that they had done these things unto him. The people therefore that was with him when he called Lazarus out of his grave, and raised him from the dead, bare record. For this cause the people also met him, for that they heard that he had done this miracle.
Those that believe in God can be sons of God and be filled with all his fullness. Jesus can fill us, too. We can receive each of the graces and qualities of Christ, when we receive the fullness of Christ. We want others to see us as full of the Holy Ghost and the grace of the Holy Ghost. We want people to see God abiding in us.
And he gave some apostles; and some prophets; and some evangelists; and some pastors and teachers; For the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ: Till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ;
It is for the good of the body to have all of these. "Till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ;" This is the mission and objective of all the offices mentioned. The faith and the increase of the knowledge of God working in us bring us to that place. There’s always room to grow, but we should reach a place of spiritual maturity where we are filled with the fullness of God. Our lives should draw others to Christ. When we are what we should be, people will be drawn to God and be saved.
For this cause I bow my knees unto the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, Of whom the whole family in heaven and earth is named, That he would grant you, according to the riches of his glory, to be strengthened with might by his Spirit in the inner man; That Christ may dwell in your hearts by faith; that ye, being rooted and ground in love, May be able to comprehend with all saints what is the breadth, and length, and depth, and height: And to know the love of Christ, which passeth knowledge, that ye might be filled with all the fulness of God
This is what Paul was preaching and praying for. He wanted them to be filled with all the fullness of God. This is what the church should be today. We want our lives to have that effect. The world needs the Spirit of God in each heart and life. We can have the graces of God in our being and working through us. It’s for everyone, not just leaders. We want people to see and remember the sweet Spirit of God in us.
