1 Thessalonians 4:9-12
But as touching brotherly love ye need not that I write unto you: for ye yourselves are taught of God to love one another. And indeed ye do it toward all the brethren which are in all Macedonia, but we beseech you, brethren, that ye increase more and more; And that ye study to be quiet, and to do your own business, and to work with your own hands, as we commanded you; That ye may walk honestly toward them that are without, and that ye may have lack of nothing.
God had taught them brotherly love. "And that ye study to be quiet, and to do your own business, and to work with your own hands, as we commanded you; That ye may walk honestly toward them that are without, and that ye may have lack of nothing." We want to walk like Jesus walked. "…study to be quiet…" Some places are the fast lane, but we want to be at rest. Mind your own business. Consider your own life. Work with your hands; contribute to society. "That ye may walk honestly toward them that are without…" Paul drew a line between those within and those without. The line is God’s wall of salvation. We’re either with God or we’re not. Our concern is to "walk honestly" toward those that don’t know God. Honesty – integrity, truthfulness and sincerity. The older meaning is honorably. Be honorable and considerate and kind to the unsaved. We should keep the modern meaning as well. They should see people who are just what they seem to be.
2 Corinthians 1:12
For our rejoicing is this, the testimony of our conscience, that in simplicity and godly sincerity, not with fleshly wisdom, but by the grace of God, we have had our conversation in the world, and more abundantly to you-ward.
We should be able to rejoice that we’ve been able to conduct ourselves right in this world. Keep your focus on pleasing God. Be godly. God wants more than a good politician – someone who tries to please everyone to get elected. People need to see God in us and know that we’re real. We need to be the same person no matter where we are. In all of our interactions in life, we need to be faithful to God.
2 Corinthians 2:14-17
Now thanks be unto God, which always causeth us to triumph in Christ, and maketh manifest the savour of his knowledge by us in every place. For we are unto God a sweet savour of Christ, in them that are saved, and in them that perish: To the one we are the savour of death unto death; and to the other the savour of life unto life. And who is sufficient for these things? For we are not as many, which corrupt the word of God: but as of sincerity, but as of God, in the sight of God speak we in Christ.
"…and maketh manifest the savour of his knowledge by us in every place." Everywhere we go, we are to be the representatives of Christ. Christ should be pleased with us. Give a taste of Christ to everyone you meet. People should be able to see a difference between those within and those without. Those unsaved should get a glimpse of God and what they can have. "For we are not as many, which corrupt the word of God: but as of sincerity, but as of God, in the sight of God speak we in Christ." We don’t want to corrupt the message of Christ. You say a lot with how you live your life. Be a good savor of what God is and what he can do. Be thoughtful in how you are to the unsaved. Be a living example of God’s word.
1 Corinthians 5:6-8
Your glorying is not good. Know ye not that a little leaven leaveneth the whole lump? Purge out therefore the old leaven, that ye may be a new lump, as ye are unleavened. For even Christ our passover is sacrificed for us: Therefore let us keep the feast, not with old leaven, neither with the leaven of malice and wickedness; but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth.
Paul was dealing with some problems in Corinth. He wanted them to see that we must be pure, as God’s people. During the Feast of Unleavened Bread and the Passover, all leaven had to be out of the house. Our whole life should be a life of purity. It is a continual thing. We should live a life of sincerity and truth. Walk with God all the time.
For God is my records, how greatly I long after you all in the bowels of Jesus Christ. And this I pray, that your love may abound yet more and more in knowledge and in all judgment; That ye may approve things that are excellent; that ye may be sincere and without offence till the day of Christ; Being filled with the fruits of righteousness, which are by Jesus Christ, unto the glory and praise of God.
"And this I pray, that your love may abound yet more and more in knowledge and in all judgment…" We want to be thoughtful and interested in others around us. Whatever God shows you, put it to work in your life. "That ye may approve things that are excellent…" Be able to put things into practice. Be what God would have you to be in this life. Be real. We want the world to see what we really are. Be filled with the fruits of righteousness. Let others see Christ in you. He will produce fruits in you to the glory and praise of God. Consider the wonderful works God can do. When He does a work in a soul, he does a good job. Our goal in life is to glorify God. We want everyone to be within.
3 John 1-7
The elder unto the well-beloved Gaius, whom I love in the truth. Beloved, I wish above all things that thou mayest prosper and be in health, even as thy soul prospereth. For I rejoiced greatly, when the brethren came and testified of the truth that is in thee, even as thou walkest in the truth. I have no greater joy than to hear that my children walk in truth. Beloved, thou doest faithfully whatsoever thou doest to the brethren, and to strangers; Which have borne witness of thy charity before the church; whom if thou bring forward on their journey after a godly sort, thou shalt do well. Because that for his name’s sake they went forth, taking nothing of the Gentiles.
The truth brought them together. We want to see people prosper, especially spiritually. It’s good when people bring a good report. "Beloved, thou doest faithfully whatsoever thou doest to the brethren, and to strangers…" Be faithful to saints and sinners. Do good to everyone. Show love and kindness to everyone you meet. Really care about people. Be consistent to others. Have the love of Christ. Be towards others what God would have you to be. Whoever you meet, live a life of honesty in all you do and say.
