Then said Jesus unto them, When ye have lifted up the Son of man, then shall ye know that I am he, and that I do nothing of myself, but as my Father hath taught me, I speak these things. And he that sent me is with me: the Father hath not left me alone; for I do always those things that please him. As he spake these words, many believed on him. Then said Jesus to those Jews which believed on him, If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed: And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free. They answered him, We be Abraham’s seed, and were never in bondage to any man: how sayest thou, Ye shall be made free? Jesus answered them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Whosoever committeth sin is the servant of sin. And the servant abideth not in the house for ever: but the Son abideth ever. If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed. I know that ye are Abraham’s seed; but ye seek to kill me, because my word hath no place in you. I speak that which I have seen with my Father; and ye do that which ye have seen with your father.
Today is Independence Day and people rejoice in their independence. It is more important to be free. "Then Jesus said unto them, When ye have lifted up the Son of man, then shall ye know that I am he, and that I do nothing of myself…" All who witnessed his resurrection realized that Jesus was indeed the Messiah. Our freedom is dependent on our knowing the truth. The truth isn’t a certain doctrines, it is Jesus. "Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me." – John 14:6. "If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed." The truth is the Son. If he makes you free, you’ll be free indeed. The freedom man needs is the freedom from sin.
"The laws were written for a moral and principled people." Thank God for the freedom you enjoy. The founders set up a republic rather than a democracy to prevent the tyranny of the mob. If we would be free, we need freedom from sin. Jesus is the truth that makes us free. It’s good to know the truth about the truth, but Jesus is who makes us free. He was the embodiment of what God wants us to be. God would have us to live like Jesus did when he walked among men.
We’ve been blessed to live where we can live out what God intended in a spiritual way. Jesus did what God wanted every day. Seek God to guide your day.
Forasmuch then as the children are partakers of flesh and blood, he also himself likewise took part of the same; that through death he might destroy him that had the power of death; that is, the devil; And deliver them who through fear of death were all their lifetime subject to bondage.
Jesus came and took on a body and experienced the struggles and battles of life and the awfulness of a painful death. By suffering death, he showed us that death is not final. We don’t have to fear death. Even though death seems permanent, when Jesus comes again, we’ll have life beyond what is here. We don’t have to be afraid of dying. When we leave here, we’ll be with the Lord. Through Christ there’s life on the other side of death. Part of our freedom is found in the fact that death isn’t final and something better is ahead.
In the mean time, when there were gathered together an innumerable multitude of people, insomuch that they trode one upon another, he began to say unto his disciples first of all, Beware ye of the leaven of the Pharisees, which is hypocrisy. For there is nothing covered, that shall not be revealed; neither hid, that shall not be known. Therefore whatsoever ye have spoken in darkness shall be heard in the light: and that which ye have spoken in the ear in closets shall be proclaimed upon the housetops. And I say unto you my friends, Be not afraid of them that kill the body, and after that have no more that they can do. But I will forwarn you whom ye shall fear; Fear him, which after he hath killed hath power to cast into hell; yea, I say unto you, Fear him.
This is both a warning and an encouragement, "For there is nothing covered, that shall not be revealed; neither hid, that shall not be known." There was hypocrisy there. Hypocrisy is pointless. It will come out in the open.
There are a lot of conspiracy theories out there. We don’t have to be caught up in those. God can expose conspiracies at the most inopportune times. All of the hidden things of man will be revealed. If we do what’s right, God can reveal things and take care of things when others would try to tear you down. God can prove what is true and what is false, when it’s needful to do so.
Don’t be afraid of those that can take your life. That’s the furthest man can go. Be concerned about what God wants. He’ll be your judge. He comes and offers mercy first. Take his mercy before you have to face his judgment. Man will only go to hell if he has rejected the mercy of Christ. Real freedom is when you stand clear before God. "He that covereth his sins shall not prosper: but whoso confesseth and forsaketh them shall have mercy." – Proverbs 28:13. Come to God and lay it before him and plead his mercy. Real freedom is to get them moved out of the way. Trust in the mercies of Christ. Don’t expect to be free when you reject the one who brings freedom. Rejecting God is the path to real bondage. Corruption has enslaved many people. We need Christ. He is the source of our liberty. Have the assurance when you stand before God that you’ll be accepted. The devil appeals to your desires and when you do something you regret, he’ll hold it over your head. Be made free in Christ. He’ll give grace to live for and walk with God.
Stand fast therefore in the liberty wherewith Christ hath made us free, and be not entangled again with the yoke of bondage.
Liberty comes from Christ. Real freedom is wrapped up in the person of Christ. Believe on him.
It’s important that he abide in us if we would continue to have liberty. "For, brethren, ye have been called unto liberty; only use not liberty for an occasion to the flesh, but by love serve one another." Going this route is to be in bondage again. True freedom requires us to maintain a relationship with God. He is the source of freedom. Things would come to try to remove us from freedom. Stay close to God and be faithful to the end. Doctrines are only important as they bring us to Jesus. Live by the life Christ puts in you. He is the living Truth. Live your life for God’s purpose. Don’t turn aside from Christ. Stay true to God. Man can’t make you free, but Christ can.
