Matthew 25:1-13

Then shall the kingdom of heaven be likened unto ten virgins, which took their lamps, and went forth to meet the bridegroom. And five of them were wise, and five were foolish. They that were foolish took their lamps, and took no oil with them: But the wise took oil in their vessels with their lamps. While the bridegroom tarried, they all slumbered and slept. And at midnight, there was a cry made, Behold, the bridegroom cometh; go ye out to meet him. Then all those virgins arose, and trimmed their lamps. And the foolish said unto the wise, Give us of your oil; for our lamps are gone out. But the wise answered, saying, Not so; lest there be not enough for us and you; but go ye rather to them that sell, and buy for yourselves. And while they went to buy, the bridegroom came; and they that were ready went in with him to the marriage; and the door was shut. Afterward came also the other virgins, saying, Lord, Lord, open to us. But he answered and said, Verily I say unto you, I know you not. Watch therefore, for ye know neither the day nor the hour wherein the Son of man cometh.

Jesus told this parable. It applies to our day. It is a comparison to help us understand something about the kingdom of heaven. Their customs were a little different than ours are today. Their weddings were at night. The wedding was at the bride’s house and these virgins were sent to light the way. As they waited they got tired and went to sleep. Five were prudent and five were careless.

All of us arrive here with a soul designed for light. There’s a certain spiritual quality to us when we get here. We’re all here to prepare to spend eternity somewhere. All of us have "slumbered and slept." We’ve all been wrapped up in this life and lost focus on our purpose and turned aside to something else. The cry is still out there to meet the bridegroom. The prudent will get oil in their vessels. If you don’t have oil in your vessel, there won’t be light. Avail yourself of God so that you’ll be ready when it comes time to meet him.

Zechariah 4:1-6, 11-14

And the angel that talked with me came again, and waked me, as a man that is wakened out of his sleep, And said unto me, What seest thou? And I said, I have looked, and behold a candlestick all of gold, with a bowl upon the top of it, and his seven lamps thereon, and seven pipes to the seven lamps, which are upon the top thereof. And two olive trees by it, one upon the right side of the bowl, and the other upon the left side thereof. So I answered and spake to the angel that talked with me, saying, What are these, my lord? Then the angel that talked with me answered and said unto me, Knowest thou not what these be? And I said, No, my lord. Then he answered and spake unto me, saying, This is the word of the Lord unto Zerubbabel, saying, Not by might, nor by power, but by my spirit, saith the Lord of hosts.

Then answered I, and said unto him, What are these two olive trees upon the right side of the candlestick and upon the left side thereof? And I answered again, and said unto him, What be these two olive branches which through the two golden pipes empty the golden oil out of themselves? And he answered me and said, knowest thou not what these be? And I said, No, my lord. Then said he, These are the two anointed ones, that stand by the Lord of the whole earth.

The angel woke him up and asked him what he saw. God would wake souls up to their need of his Word and his Spirit within them. If you don’t have this oil feeding into your soul, you’ll need it when you meet with God. When you get down to the end of things, it isn’t a good time to try to buy oil. The careless ones were shut out.

Our purpose in life is to go out and meet the bridegroom. We need to get the life that is in Christ. If we’ll be ready for that day, we need to be ready now. God put us here to prepare to be with him throughout eternity. Get the oil and be ready.

"Watch therefore, for ye know neither the day nor the hour wherein the Son of man cometh." We don’t know when he’ll come for us, but we need to be ready. The day is coming. Don’t wait to buy oil until then. Be ready now. Too many people are failing to plan. Eternity will soon be here. Today is the day of salvation. Our lamp must be burning when he comes.
