Don’t listen to lies and don’t make them your refuge. Have you drawn closer to God lately? Do you see fruit?
Genesis 3:1-6, 22
Now the serpent was more subtil than any beast of the field which the Lord God had made. And he said unto the woman, Yea, hath God said, Ye shall not eat of every tree of the garden? And the woman said unto the serpent, We may eat of the fruit of the trees of the garden: But of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God hath said, Ye shall not eat of it, neither shall ye touch it, lest ye die. And the serpent said unto the woman, Ye shall not surely die: For God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil. And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to make one wise, she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat, and gave also unto her husband with her; and he did eat.
And the Lord God said, Behold, the man is become as one of us, to know good and evil: and now, lest he put forth his hand, and take also of the tree of life, and eat, and live for ever:
"For God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil…" This was a twisted version of the truth. It is the worst kind of lie – the half-truth. The devil would tell you that you’re just find when you aren’t and he has you trapped. He has you hiding in a refuge of lies. Satan knows the word of God better than you do. He twists the word of God into half-truths. He’ll use whatever he can. He doesn’t care, as long as he gets you.
But a certain man named Ananias, with Saphhira his wife, sold a possession, And kept back part of the price, his wife also being privy to it, and brought a certain part, and laid it at the apostles’ feet. But Peter said, Ananias, why hath Satan filled thine heart to lie to the Holy Ghost, and to keep back part of the price of the land? Whiles it remained, was it not thine own? and after it was sold, was it not in thine own power? why hast thou conceived this thing in thine heart? thou hast not lied unto men, but unto God. And Ananias hearing these words fell down, and gave up the ghost: and great fear came on all them that heard these things. And the young men arose, wound him up, and carried him out, and buried him. And it was about the space of three hours after, when his wife, not knowing what was done, came in. And Peter answered unto her, Tell me whether ye sold the land for so much? And she said, Yea, for so much. Then Peter said unto her, How is it that ye have agreed together to tempt the Spirit of the Lord? behold, the feet of them which have buried thy husband are at the door, and shall carry thee out. Then fell she down straightway at his feet, and yielded up the ghost: and the young men came in, and found her dead, and carrying her forth, buried her by her husband. And great fear came upon all the church, and upon as many as heard these things.
Ananias and Sapphira weren’t punished for keeping back part of the price. The punishment was for the lie. Do you claim to have given all to God while you are holding something back? Does God have it all? "But Peter said, Ananias, why hath Satan filled thine heart to lie to the Holy Ghost…?" Who knows exactly what the devil used to work on these two, but the result wasn’t good.
Don’t settle for the lie of morality. Give it all to God and follow him. "Lying lips are abomination to the Lord…" – Proverbs 12:22a. If you speak a lie long enough, you’ll deceive yourself and believe it. If it’s a lie, it won’t stand.
But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves. For if any be a hearer of the word, and not a doer, he is like unto a man beholding his natural face in a glass: For he beholdeth himself, and goeth his way, and straightway forgetteth what manner of man he was. But whoso looketh into the perfect law of liberty, and continueth therein, he being not a forgetful hearer, but a doer of the work, this man shall be blessed in his deed. If any man among you seem to be religious, and bridleth not his tongue, but deceiveth his own heart, this man’s religion is vain.
If you are deceiving yourself, it’s all vain. Are you saved? If you aren’t drawing closer to God or being fruitful, you could be believing a lie. Examine yourself. Do you feel the draw of God in your soul?
This talks about having the word, but not doing it. True salvation will prompt you to work for God. Let the love of God cause you to want to do for others … and then do it.
Jesus said unto them, If God were your Father, ye would love me; for I proceeded forth and came from God; neither came I of myself, but he sent me. Why do ye not understand my speech? even because ye cannot hear my word. Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it. And because I tell you the truth, ye believe me not.
Do you understand what God speaks to your heart? Do you see how far deceitfulness can go? These should have been the first to realize who Jesus was, but they were deceived. "… And because I tell you the truth, ye believe me not…" The deception had done so far that they didn’t recognize truth when they saw it. They crucified the truth so that they could keep their refuge of lies.
As Nicodemus looked to Jesus, the refuge of lies was swept away. The other Pharisees no doubt shunned him as he took that stand. The longer you stay deceived, the harder it will be to be convinced of the truth. Pride goes with deception.
And straightway Jesus constrained his disciples to get into a ship, and to go before him unto the other side, while he sent the multitudes away. And when he had sent the multitudes away, he went up into a mountain apart to pray: and when the evening was come, he was there alone. But the ship was now in the midst of the sea, tossed with waves; for the wind was contrary. And in the fourth watch of the night Jesus went unto them, walking on the sea. And when the disciples saw him walking on the sea, they were troubled, saying, It is a spirit; and they cried out for fear. But straightway Jesus spake unto them, saying, Be of good cheer, it is I; be not afraid. And Peter answered him and said, Lord, if it be thou, bid me come unto thee on the water. And he said, Come. And when Peter was come down out of the ship, he walked on the water, to go to Jesus. But when he saw the wind boisterous, he was afraid; and beginning to sink, he cried, saying, Lord, save me. And immediately Jesus stretched forth his hand, and caught him, and said unto him, O thou of little faith, wherefore didst thou doubt? And when they were come into the ship, the wind ceased. Then they that were in the ship came and worshipped him, saying, Of a truth thou art the Son of God.
Peter was safe with Christ on the water. If doubts hadn’t gotten in the way, he could have continued to walk on the waves. The devil was there to supply the doubts.
The devil would bring lies to the saved today. How many does he tell, "You can’t live this way…"? He’ll show you the trial and tell you it’s too much. Don’t let the devil deceive you. He’s trying to cause you to doubt and to fail.
And he said unto his disciples, Therefore I say unto you, Take no thought for your life, what ye shall eat; neither for the body, what ye shall put on. The life is more than meat, and the body is more than raiment. Consider the ravens: for they neither sow nor reap; which neither have storehouse nor barn; and God feedeth them: how much more are ye better than the fowls? And which of you with taking thought can add to his stature one cubit? If ye then be not able to do that thing which is least, why take ye thought for the rest? Consider the lilies how they grow: they toil not, they spin not; and yet I say unto you, that Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. If then God so clothe the grass, which is to day in the field, and to morrow is cast into the oven; how much more will he clothe you, O ye of little faith? And seek not ye what ye shall eat, or what ye shall drink, neither be ye of doubtful mind.
Peter doubted and he sank. Jesus asked Peter, "Why did you doubt?" Jesus could be asking us this, too. "…neither be ye of doubtful mind." Don’t doubt what God can do. Don’t doubt God. The devil would try to bring doubts. We have many promises from God. The enemy would try to nullify those promises.
Wherefore hear the word of the Lord, ye scornful men, that rule this people which is in Jerusalem. Because ye have said, We have made a covenant with death, and with hell are we at agreement; when the overflowing scourge shall pass through, it shall not come unto us: for we have made lies our refuge, and under falsehood have we hid ourselves; Therefore thus saith the Lord God, Behold, I lay in Zion for a foundation a stone, a tried stone, a precious corner stone, a sure foundation; he that believeth shall not make haste. Judgment also will I lay to the line, and righteousness to the plummet: and the hail shall sweep away the refuge of lies, and the waters shall overflow the hiding place. And your covenant with death shall be disannulled, and your agreement with hell shall not stand; when the overflowing scourge shall pass through, then ye shall be trodden down by it.
The attitude here is one of independent pride. Just because you’re young doesn’t make you exempt. Don’t believe the lie that you have plenty of time. You don’t know when your time is up.
These didn’t believe it would affect them, but they were affected. Lies won’t stand. Truth will stand.
Check and see that you’re on the Rock. Don’t trust in anything else. Get things settled with Christ and stay there.
Matthew 8:5-10, 13
And when Jesus was entered into Capernaum, there came unto him a centurion, beseeching him, And saying, Lord, my servant lieth at home sick of the palsy, grievously tormented. And Jesus saith unto him, I will come and heal him. The centurion answered and said, Lord, I am not worthy that thou shouldest come under my roof: but speak the word only, and my servant shall be healed. For I am a man under authority, having soldiers under me: and I say to this man, Go, and he goeth; and to another, come, and he cometh; and to my servant, Do this, and he doeth it. When Jesus heard it, he marvelled, and said to them that followed, Verily I say unto you, I have not found so great faith, no, not in Israel.
And Jesus said unto the centurion, Go thy way; and as thou hast believed, so be it done unto thee. And his servant was healed in the selfsame hour.
"…Go thy way; and as thou hast believed, so be it done unto thee…" Some believe they won’t be able to be saved because they think they’re too far gone. As long as they believe that, they can’t be saved because their faith can’t take hold. What do you believe God can do for you?
