Judgment Day Confidence

"And Lord, haste the day when my faith shall be sight,

The clouds be rolled back as a scroll;

The trump shall resound, and the Lord shall descend

Even so, it is well with my soul." – It is Well, by Horatio G Spafford

Consider what the last day will be like. Think about, how in all of that, you can be able to say, "Even so…" We can have that much assurance regarding our salvation.

Ephesians 2:19-22; Acts 4:10-12

Now therefore ye are no more strangers and foreigners, but fellowcitizens with the saints, and of the household of God; And are built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ himself being the chief corner stone; In whom all the building fitly framed together groweth unto an holy temple in the Lord: In whom ye also are builded together for an habitation of God through the Spirit.

Be it known unto you all, and to all the people of Israel, that by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom ye crucified, whom God raised from the dead, even by him doth this man stand here before you whole. This is the stone which was set at nought of you builders which is become the head of the corner. Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.

"…Jesus Christ himself being the chief corner stone…" "This stone which was set at nought of you builders which is become the head of the corner." Jesus is referred to as a stone or a Rock. It brings the image of security, stability, strength and permanence.

- Security – "as the shadow of a great rock…"

- Stability – "brought out of a pit … miry clay…

- Strength – preeminence – "end of the earth … when heart is overwhelmed … lead me to the rock …"

- Permanence – something that can’t be moved – "He only is my rock … I shall not be moved…"

Isaiah 28:2, 14-18

Behold, the Lord hath a mighty and strong one, which as a tempest of hail and a destroying storm, as a flood of mighty waters overflowing, shall cast down to the earth with the hand.

Wherefore hear the word of the Lord, ye scornful men, that rule this people which is in Jerusalem. Because ye have said, We have made a covenant with death, and with hell are we at agreement; when the overflowing scourge shall pass through, it shall not come unto us: for we have made lies our refuge, and under falsehood have we hid ourselves; Therefore thus saith the Lord God, Behold, I lay in Zion for a foundation a stone, a tried stone, a precious corner stone, a sure foundation; he that believeth shall not make haste. Judgment also will I lay to the line, and righteousness to the plummet: and the hail shall sweep away the refuge of lies, and the waters shall overflow the hiding place. And your covenant with death shall be disannulled, and your agreement with hell shall not stand; when the overflowing scourge shall pass through, then ye shall be trodden down by it.

A storm is coming, not one that life brings our way. This storm is one the Lord sends. There is an overflowing scourge coming and the only refuge from it is in Jesus Christ. This is the judgment of God against sin. Consider the final judgment. This description can fit the final judgment to the lost. It will be judgment without mercy… exacting judgment.

The judgment day is coming on all of us. We must take refuge before that day comes. If we don’t, it will be too late to take refuge.

"Therefore thus saith the Lord God, Behold, I lay in Zion for a foundation a stone, a tried stone, a precious corner stone, a sure foundation; he that believeth shall not make haste." In the middle of judgment, the cornerstone rises up as the only safe refuge. Those on the stone won’t be washed away. Those that believe are absolutely safe.

A foundation stone – he made all things and formed all things; he is the beginning and foundation of all things; he can’t be swept away (permanence). Those that are in Christ can’t be swept away. "He only is my rock, I shall not be moved." No other foundation will be safe in the day of judgment.

A tried stone – he was tried, "tempted in all points like as we and yet without sin"; he was tested; for the joy set before him he endured the cross. Countless souls in every age have tried and tested him and he has proven faithful. He has been tried before you and been found faithful. To put your trust in anything else is to wager your soul and lose. This life is your chance to get it right. Place your wager on Christ. Would you gamble with your soul? You have one chance to get it right. After this life, you don’t get another chance.

A precious stone – a valuable stone because it’s rare; he is the only one, the only source of salvation. "… become the head of the corner" "no other name under heaven"

A sure stone / foundation – it is a stone that has been set / appointed for salvation; it is appointed by God – "Therefore thus saith the Lord God, Behold, I lay in Zion for a foundation a stone, a tried stone, a precious corner stone, a sure foundation…"

It is significant that God laid the stone. There is only one refuge appointed by God. Do you think anything else will be safe? No.

When we are on the stone God appointed, we can have confidence in what God himself has appointed. There is a false refuge. Hell has provided a refuge, but it won’t protect from the judgment of God.

"Wherefore hear the word of the Lord, ye scornful men, that rule this people which is in Jerusalem. Because ye have said, We have made a covenant with death, and with hell are we at agreement; when the overflowing scourge shall pass through, it shall not come unto us: for we have made lies our refuge, and under falsehood have we hid ourselves." "scornful men…" Are you scornful about the things of God? You won’t prosper. Do you think you’ll be unaffected by God’s judgment?

Sometimes sinners take refuge in blaming their heritage. They try to find comfort in excusing their sin by blaming someone else. That refuge is a lie.

Sometimes they will blame hardship. They flee to a false refuge for comfort. That’s trusting a lie. Some flee to the false refuge of morality. Morality and ethics in place of salvation is a covenant with the devil. If you’re not on the sure foundation, your refuge is a refuge of lies and won’t protect you at the judgment. Some find refuge in religious works of days gone by. If you get off the stone and trust in anything else, it’s a refuge of lies.

People use all these things to ease their conscience. None of these will stand. "And your covenant with death shall be disannulled, and your agreement with hell shall not stand; when the overflowing scourge shall pass through, then ye shall be trodden down by it. From the time that it goeth forth it shall take you: for morning by morning it shall pass over, by day and by night: and it shall be a vexation only to understand the report." Compare this with verse 15: "Because ye have said, We have made a covenant with death, and with hell are we at agreement; when the overflowing scourge shall pass through, it shall not come unto us: for we have made lies our refuge, and under falsehood have we hid ourselves…" God’s judgment is real. Don’t trust in something fake in the face of a very real judgment.

Acts 4:11-12

This is the stone which was set at nought of you builders which is become the head of the corner. Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.

You must be saved. The judgment of God is coming. Trusting anything other than Christ is a refuge of lies. Flee to the sure foundation.
