Getting TogetherBro. David Chancellor

Again I say unto you, That if two of you shall agree on earth as touching any thing that they shall ask; it shall be done for them of my Father which is in heaven. For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them.
Real worship is found in a life submitted to God. The Bible talks about worshipping together and the benefits that come from it. We can meet together and go away encouraged and strengthened in the things of God. When we meet together our focus should be on God.
Jesus is our life. He’s what we’re about. Because he’s our life, we enjoy coming together and sharing about him. Worship begins when our hearts turn toward God.
We need to gather together for the right thing, to share our worship for God together. Some meet for other, less appropriate reasons.
The day following, when the people which stood on the other side of the sea saw that there was none other boat there, save that one whereinto his disciples were entered, and that Jesus went not with his disciples into the boat, but that his disciples were gone away alone; (Howbeit there came other boats from Tiberias nigh unto the place where they did eat bread, after that the Lord had given thanks:) When the people therefore saw that Jesus was not there, neither his disciples, they also took shipping, and came to Capernaum, seeking for Jesus. And when they found him on the other side of the sea they said unto him, Rabbi, when camest thou hither? Jesus answered them and said, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Ye seek me, not because ye saw the miracles, but because ye did eat of the loaves, and were filled, Labour not for the meat which perisheth, but for that meat which endureth unto everlasting life, which the Son of man shall give unto you: for him hat God the Father sealed.
It was the day after Jesus had fed the 5000. Jesus and his disciples had gone to the other side of the sea. The people tracked them down. Jesus didn’t answer their question. He tried to help them see they were looking for the wrong thing. They were looking for a free meal.
Going to church for a free meal isn’t the right reason to be there. We should come because we’ve found spiritual life and we don’t want to lose it. We should come to be reinforced in our spiritual life. If you’re just here for the stuff, it won’t hold up. That’s not what church is about. God’s people try to help each other out, but don’t come just because people give you stuff. Come to be in the presence of God and to share and hear all the miraculous things God does.
We want people to have their hearts turned to God. The 5000 didn’t ask Jesus to feed them; he just did. We serve a miracle worker who can give you what you need. He’s the one that can meet the need of your life. He works a miracle in the soul. Come to church expecting to see Jesus here. Bring him with you.
And Jesus went into the temple of God, and cast out all them that sold and bought in the temple, and overthrew the tables of the moneychangers, and the seats of them that sold doves. And said unto them, It is written, My house shall be called the house of prayer; but ye have made it a den of thieves. And the blind and the lame came to him in the temple; and he healed them. And when the chief priests and scribes saw the wonderful things that he did, and the children crying in the temple, and saying, Hosanna to the son of David; they were sore displeased. And they said unto him, Hearest thou what these say? And Jesus saith unto them, Yea; have ye never read, Out of the mouth of babes and sucklings thou hast perfected praise? And he left them, and went out of the city into Bethany; and he lodged there.
It was the time of the feasts and Jesus had ridden in on the colt. Everyone was happy. He went to the temple and saw the people doing business there. Some people go to church to do business (or networking). We might do business with church folks, but that isn’t why we’re here. These were selling things for people to use for worship. We’re not here to make money or to advance a financial cause. Church is about God, not business connections.
Jesus ran the businesses out of the temple and then he started healing people. The children started praising Jesus. The leaders missed the point. They thought the praise was wrong. Jesus told them that praise was appropriate.
We want people to come to church so that their souls can be healed and so that they can praise God. Our life should be Jesus wherever we are. Business is not why we come to church. Come together and see God work and praise him.
Now while Paul waited for them at Athens, his spirit was stirred in him, when he saw the city wholly given to idolatry. Therefore disputed he in the synagogue with the Jews, and with the devout persons, and in the market daily with them that met with him. Then certain philosophers of the Epicureans, and of the Stoicks, encountered him. And some said, What will this babbler say? other some, He seemeth to be a setter forth of stranger gods: because he preached unto them Jesus, and the resurrection. And they took him, and brought him unto Areopagus, saying, May we know what this new doctrine, whereof thou speakest, is? For thou bringest certain strange things to our ears; we would know therefore what these things mean. (For all the Athenians and strangers which were there spent their time in nothing else, but either to tell, or to hear some new thing.)
These were talking to one of the greatest preachers that ever was, but they just wanted to hear something new. They weren’t really interested in knowing about God. There are some who go to church just to hear something new. They get in trouble when it isn’t something true. Some who claim new light are just rehashing old heresy. We come to hear about Jesus and to draw closer to him. We may hear the same thing several times, if we haven’t figured it out yet. We may need it reinforced to get the point. Let God speak to your heart and help you to get what you need. Come for something true. Get what you need to walk with God here. Come and focus your attention on God and be helped by him. The word of God is still good for us.
2 Peter 1:11-16
For so an entrance shall be ministered unto you abundantly into the everlasting kingdom of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. Wherefore I will not be negligent to put you always in remembrance of these things, though ye know them, and be established in the present truth. Yea, I think it meet, as long as I am in this tabernacle, to stir you up by putting you in remembrance; Knowing that shortly I must put off this my tabernacle, even as our Lord Jesus Christ hath shewed me. Moreover I will endeavour that ye may be able after my decease to have these things always in remembrance. For we have not followed cunningly devised fables, when we made known unto you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but were eyewitnesses of his majesty.
If you add the things in verses 5-7 (faith, virtue, knowledge, temperance, patience, godliness, brotherly kindness, charity), it’s good to help you. Peter kept reminding them because it would help them to get to heaven. We come to service to be reminded. These things help you to be fruitful for God. See if you’re adding virtue. It’s more than just believing. Add virtue. Get your attention refocused. Let the fruit of the Spirit be produced in your life. Reminders are good for us. Peter wasn’t questioning their walk with God; he was reminding them to stay focused on God. He wanted them to remember. Keep the message of God going out. Tell people what you’ve found to be true. He wanted them to know what he’d seen of Jesus. We should share what we’ve seen in our walk with Jesus. Come to be reminded. Be reminded, reinforced, encouraged and corrected. These are good reasons to come to church. Come because you want to make heaven your home. Come and see that God is still at work and can bring you through.
